Hey Patrick, new but big fan, when drilling through marble or granite, make sure your bit is obviously diamond coated and second don't keep going up and down with the press. The repeated pressure is what makes it break so just let it spin and go down slowly and consistently while keeping it lubricated. I work with granite and quartz as my job and know how fragile it is but that should help a lot
Patrick Adair Designs I love your rings dude. I have a thing for rings and these are right up my alley and your process is very simple but beautiful. Very well designed
I don't think you know what you talking about. Personally if i were the one making the videos, and i had someone leave a comment as informative and well thought out as the one you are responding to (as opposed to the kind I'm sure you'd leave on a video if you saw them doing something different than you would do, "Tat not how u do tat stoopid"), I would appreciate the input regardless of whether or not the person commenting was saying something i already knew. Constructive criticism is how people learn.
Things I love about this video: 1) You talk about having 10k subscribers. Now you have over 500k. Congrats man, a dream come true, I'm sure. 2) You show your mistakes. As a jewelry maker on the hobbyist level, it's so nice to know I"m not the only one that can have a crappy day when it comes to trying to get something done. Thanks for showing us the difficulty in cutting that marble. The videos that make everything look SO easy hurt my soul when I try and have problems ;) Congrats on an amazing talent, an extremely successful UA-cam channel, and all that goes along with that.
You have to support stone very evenly when drilling. The camping down, which you realized, plus a solid base will help with a successful hole. I would hot glue the stone to a piece of mdf in the areas that aren’t rings and just hold it with your hand.
Highly doubt you'll see this message on such an old video, but you can truly see and even watch you grow and progress through your videos. Fantastic work! Even mesmerizing! Can't wait for my ring to arrive...😁
This video is old, so you may have already done this but if you fabricate or buy a tool holder to mount on the lathe bed for your Dremel your facing-off for your rings will be less time consuming and more precise. Also from one stone cutter to another support whatever you are cutting on the bottom and clamp from the sides only with soft bumpers. I like your work!
i like your work patrick, just a few tips for you, the reason the granite is breaking is because it is not supported correctly, look back at your vid and you can see it flexing under the cutting pressure, you need something harder than a few strips of wood under it, a slab of alloy would be better, and support all of the marble not just the edges. also try mounting or clamping the dremmel to the tool post of the lathe for more accurate results when you are grinding down to a final size, this will leave you with alot less runout. for good results in machining a good setup is usualy more crucial than cutting for a good result with less runout. if you have any questions feel free to ask.... great vid.
I am not Patrick. I just wanted to let you know that tip is going to help me. I was just going ask what is the best way for a beginner (My self) to start.
Awesome work! I have an idea for you. State rings. Every state has a state tree and a state mineral. For example, California would be Redwood, and serpentine.
Been a joy watching your video. About the drilling, what the marble guys say. And the water is not just for lubrication but also against friction heating. Stones are prone to (emotional) breakdown when they don't get heated evenly. Drilling when the material is already in a bath of hot water might yield a more consistent result. It will definitely be more messy though...
Bud 16:45 you got .003 run out by hand!!! You are the man and that’s why I’m subbed and now looking to get a lath and all the equipment I need to start building rings hopefully a 1/16 as good as yours! You have and suggestions on the equipment you don’t sell on your website? Thanks for your time, and keep pumping out those awesome videos!
Hey mate great channel! I drill through marble, glass and porcelain all the time. You've gotta have a completely flat surface otherwise every time you apply pressure the twisting and flexing caused by an uneven surface will break, snap and shatter these materials every time. Hope that helps for next time. Your a great artist and I love your rings!
I wonder how it would work it you could attach the Drimal to the carriage of your lathe? I talking about at 16:15. Instead of using the dial indicator you could just let the lathe turn, move the Dremel over with the carriage real slow. That should make it equal thickness
You might try 3M Trizact Sanding / polishing pads, you can cut them into manageable strips and use similar to Emory cloth, multiple grits. Also, you could install felt pad tool to the dremel / grinder and apply polishing rouge paste while on the lathe.
This is one of my favorite rings. I love the look of copper against dark. My all time combo is copper and dark hunter green. Amazing work! Someday Ill order!
Very nice video but I would make one suggestion for you, I noticed you used diamond platted core drill bits. I'd recommend Sintered core bits, they have diamonds embedded within the metal not bonded on top. leaves a cleaner core and lasts about 30 times longer which will bring your costs down :). you can buy them pretty cheap on ebay. I'm a jewler and lapidarist and love carving stones. Good luck and great vids
Patrick Adair Designs they will work on that as well. if the plated cuts through it then Sintered will as well. diamonds are the hardest known substance and cut thru anything. only difference is Sintered last much longer because as the metal is worn down thru use new diamonds are exposed. look them up online to get a better explanation then what I have said, you won't be sorry that's for sure. I quit using cheap plated bits long ago. enjoy 😃
I love the way you used different materials to produced a ring. Can i request that you create a ring using jade. Maybe a combination with other materials would be nice. Love your work..
Interesting video, didn't know anything about ringmaking before. Don't forget you can add voice over to your videos when you're doing things like sanding and polishing. Just saying "And now I spray on some water and polish with 320 sand paper" makes for a nicer viewing experience then silence. :)
i wonder what would happen if you put a shiny white strip of something behind the marble to reflect light; and how a shiny white surface would vary from a flat white surface in regards to color and brightness.
This ring in bog wood would have been super cool. I mean carbon fiber helps with blending natural and old fashion with new and modern, but the bog wood would have this natural organic feel to it. That's what I think
Fine Piece Of Work. Fascinating To Watch True Craftsmanship Unfolding Step By Beautiful Step. One more thing..........I'd really love to see an inlay of 24K gold rather than that of copper. This is not to say that copper isn't beautiful in its own right - but it's just that I have this odd fetish for this - the most marvelous of all materials on earth - - solid gold. The weight; the color; the glistening quality and the exquisite feel of the most precious metal there is [Im my humble opinion.]
I actually like your old one better. The slightly rounded shape and stronger hint of green make it more... striking, I guess? I also like the thicker copper pieces.
I prefere the ronded shape of your first ring than this flate one, but it's just a matter of personnal taste :-P I see you are making progresses, your store web site evolved too. Things begins to be serious ^^ I hope you have great success anda lots of orders :-] keep going
WOW! I can only wish (DREAM) about making rings. I have been turning pens for 6 years. What does a ring like that sell for, and, do you know of anyone who teaches classes on this art. What you just did was masterful and produced a beautiful piece. Thanks for sharing.
As a machinist I am wondering why you used your dremel to size it but then went back and used your lathe to get it to final specs? Use your lathe to do that work and you wont fight the squareness of the ring in those situations.
Michael Castelan is correct...From a thermodynamic point of view when drilling something hard but brittle like marble...A lot more speed, a lot of liquid and less pressure downward...Hope this helps...Great work...Would love a price but with 14K White gold instead of copper and white marble...Let me know what price you'd want...Love the work
Consider getting a copy of Machinery's Handbook to help you with learning about holding the work, holding the tool, and holding the process. Too much random error that you can get rid of. Love your passion.
Hey Patrick! Love your channel, Im fairly new to ring making, currently busy with a copper ring for my wife! I just want to know what will be the best way to treat/ finish the ring to avoid tarnish/green residual on her finger? Thanks Appreciate!
what about maybe a white granite/marble ring with either gold or a semiprecious metal inlay? I love the black rings but maybe a white ring would be pretty cool!
I know this is a long time after the video, but what is the chuck that goes inside the ring called? I'm trying to buy one for my lathe, but i can find its name?
I am looking for wedding rings. I like your rings very much, but my girlfriend wants to have a thin ring with a max width of 4-5mm. Are you willing and able to do a metal meteorite glow ring in this dimensions? Thanks.
He is clearly not a machinist - you should look somewhere else for advice on how to use a lathe. Self taught people teaching other people that are teaching themselves on operating machines that can kill you is bound to end in a disaster at some point. Most certainly, I would not want to take responsibility for someone getting pulled into a lathe because i missed something when instructing them.
Thom Idk about the lathes you worked with, but some of the ones that i had my hands on would have no issues breaking your hand and arm in 10 different places without even slowing down. I think someone with long hair getting their hair caught in there would have a great day, spinal wrap - might as well jump infront of a highspeed train.
This is how life works. You can die every day from every stpid thing. If you say "It's dangerous." or "It can kill you." It's not gonna help. You just discourage people if you say "It will kill ya!" and not giving any instruction how It can help your work. You can wake up and die. But no one say "You can die this morning, have a good last one." ""This toaster is very dangerous, It's gonna take your life and your wife." It's not the Devil. Don't make it up. Just calm down and break your arm at 10 different places if you want to. You going to die anyway.
Thom Yeah you're missing the point of this - there's plenty of well written lathe operation and safety instructions on the Internet. why would he take responsibility by making a video which is inevitably going to be a worse resource? The whole "you're gonna die anyway" attitude is fucking retarded - you can pick between getting properly instructed and keeping your arm, or suffering from very likely permanent injury by being reckless. There's a healthy level of fear that needs to stay present - it's called awareness of danger, you absolutely need it when working with heavy machines. Not making people aware of dangers and pretending the world is cotton candy is a lot worse than potentially discouraging people, because the latter doesn't make people lose their god damn arm.
Fear is not helathy at all. I say I will be carefull because I love life, and not because I fear something bad will happen. I think your comment was negative and discouraging. Thats all. LATHE DOESN'T MAKE PEOPLE LOSE THEIR ARM, PEOPLE DOES!

as someone also in the granite business, i agree with Michael Castelan
I cant get over what a hot mess it looks like up until the very end and then its magnificent!

State rings.

I would love have one of these, but with white carbon fiber, white marble, and brass loops.
Another inlay idea
Maybe try clear glass micro-spheres and Ceramic micro-spheres of a variety of sizes to create clear voids for the inlay.
I never thought rings could look so cool
This is one of my favorite rings. I love the look of copper against dark. My all time combo is copper and dark hunter green. Amazing work! Someday Ill order!
Absolutely LOVE this ring. The price is a little steep for me but it's by far the best ring I've ever seen!
You're a braver soul than I, putting your fingers that close to the chuck!

you might want to verify your speed on the drill press or use a better coolant than just water as well
The Chuck you are using @11:35 what's it called?
For the give away ring you should make it out of pink and purple glass blended together to make a space effect and use carbon fiber in the out side
I love the way you used different materials to produced a ring. Can i request that you create a ring using jade. Maybe a combination with other materials would be nice. Love your work..

Very cool ring man. Nice work!
this is a really elegant ring, very manly in a reserved way.
Hi I want to make the carbon fiber ring shining or glossy can you help me plz
Love from bangladesh. We are your big fan sir. The people of bangladesh are like your videos sir. Love from bangladesh.
I actually like your old one better. The slightly rounded shape and stronger hint of green make it more... striking, I guess? I also like the thicker copper pieces.
wonderful idea and design, and you have a very interesting collection on your website, too.

so how much would the carbon fiber, marble and copper wedding ring cost? i wear a size 10.5
Mad respect for failing 3 times and keeping going!!!

You should cover your lathe ways from the grinding dust or it will destroy the machine
Wouldn't it be best to use a wet saw as in one with a constant flow of coolant on the material being cut as well as the cutting head?
hey patrick could you do this ring but with a white marble?
Much more interesting than the other videos
The ring is awesome
I assume it took you much more time

I enjoyed watching this build
how much for a walnut, copper and deer antler ring in size 13
Very nice making! Thanks for sharing! May I ask how is that lathe chuck for rings named or where can I buy one? Thanks!
I do love to watch a fellow artist.

As always you never fail to impress haha keep em up! :)
I love to see more glow inlay rings.
what about maybe a white granite/marble ring with either gold or a semiprecious metal inlay? I love the black rings but maybe a white ring would be pretty cool!
Patrick Adair Designs Yeah that would be awesome! Or perhaps (if you can get your hands on it, I'm not sure of its structure) a white Kevlar material.
Or a titanium starters ring I like the blue
try a gold and meteorite ring, It might look really cool
Good looking ring dude... Nice job...
Do you make this ring in a thinner size like for a woman?
Really nice ring
Hi Pat. Beautiful work, man ! Great thx from Denmark
Why not use crushed up marble instead? It seems like it’d be easier.
I know this is a long time after the video, but what is the chuck that goes inside the ring called? I'm trying to buy one for my lathe, but i can find its name?

Where do you get the copper rings that you put into it?
This ring reminds me of the flooring of some five star hotel. Not entirely sure why, but that's a compliment.

what if you put glow powder underneath the marble! Having it be back-lit would be so impressive
Where did you learn to make rings and when you applied how did you know this is what you wanted to do?
What if you used glow stone beneath the marble? Would it be bright enough to show through?
Nice rings designs mate, curious on where you find your black ceramic ring blanks, couldn't find them on the ring supplies website that you linked
I'm a new subscriber just now... By accident my UA-cam started your video and it was interesting
Keep it up...
Enjoyed your craftsmanship✌
Can you make one that the inside glows blue and instead of copper it also glows blue
the most beautiful thing ive ever seen omg
Is it possible to stabilize stone like you would with a burl. By putting it in a resin and placing it under pressure
adorei esse tipo de anel de carbono com cobre
how thick is the carbon fiber that you used in this video?
yeah too much pressure via the vise. also a wetsaw used for cutting marble has a constant flow of water, you dont want the blade to dry out at all.
You are a master Sir.
hey patrick I am an 16 year old boy from belgium and i just got subscribed to your channel. I alread love your work. keep up the good work and i hope your channel will grow a lot more also for the give away you shoud do an titanium and meteorite ring (that's my personal favorite)

Damn. That's a nice ring. I would like to have one too.
That really does look good but I do have a question have you ever tried using quartz instead? I would be very interested in seeing a light-colored chords maybe a white or a silver they make quartz and marble reproductions Style and I would be interested to see one like that but with stainless steel or silver ring in it I think that would be amazing really bright and flashy but again I don't know if you can use quartz
Loctite also makes an apoxy resin which would be great for this.
where do i purchase the materials used to make this ring ?
I prefer the curve on the original tbh!
Srrs how do you ceep the pice of snadpaper on the dremmel bit evry time i use that bit my rol of sandpaper goes flying
