      Hi, are you using half hard or dead soft material?

    • @GomeowCreations
      @GomeowCreations  5 років тому +1

      @@AcupuncturebyStorm when it comes to copper and brass I ready don't know. If I had to guess, my sheet metal is half hard and my wire is soft but this really doesn't matter much to me seeing that I heat and anneal all of my work to make it softer and easier to work with.

    I needed this math in my life. I didn't know that if you add the thickness of the material before multiplying by 3.14 that you could get such an exact measurement. It's gonna make life much easier.

    • @GomeowCreations
      @GomeowCreations  6 років тому +5

      Yeah, when I first started I had the hardest time making rings the right size on my first try. I had a book that had some default measurements for different ring sizes but it didn't always match the thickness of the metal I was using. I came a crossed this little bit of math on a very poor quality video that, if I'm remembering right it wasn't even in English(I don't speak any other languages other than English) but I saw them use this simple math problem to make circle for the work that they made. Seeing that rings are just fancy circles, I took this bit of math and now I use it all the time. (Diameter+Thickness)*3.14 👍

    • @irianthul
      @irianthul 6 років тому +3

      Actually, it can be even more precise. The formula you're using is 2*pi*r, with r being the radius, or pi*d, with d being the diameter. However, the thickness of the metal gets added on both sides of the ring, since it's part of the radius, not the diameter. So to be completely correct, you can use (diameter+2*thickness)*3.14. Why it's been working out for you is probably because the extra 0.8mm in this case rounds gets lost in the actual inaccuracies of the ringmaking, filing here and hammering it out a little bit more, but especially when using thicker material, it starts to play a more important role. Just so you know! :)

    • @GomeowCreations
      @GomeowCreations  6 років тому +1

      Thanks for the info, I will definitely give that a try. :)

    • @Clipster15
      @Clipster15 5 років тому

      The (diameter + thickness)*pi for the length of the wire comes from the assumption that if you draw an imaginary curve through the center of the wire and then bend it, the length of this curve does not change. This is a reasonable assumption given that there is going to be compression on the inside of the curve and extension on the outside. I'm sure its not perfect, but certainly better than neglecting the thickness all together. What you give, (diameter + 2*thickness)*pi, would follow from assuming that whatever imaginary curve becomes the outside of the circle upon bending it, this length is the same as that of the unbent wire. Surely thats not very good though as you know it will expand a little. Id say, without any knowledge of the material being bent, it is best to assume the path along its center remains the same in length which leads to the formula given previously: length = (diameter + thickness)*pi.

    If you ever find that copper (or copper alloys such as brass) turn your finger green, try adding silver for the part that comes in contact with your hand. Even 0.2 mm should stand the test of time. Great ring by the way, I should like to make a similar one in yellow and rose gold. When a I can afford it off course :)

    • @GomeowCreations
      @GomeowCreations  6 років тому +1

      You're right, copper can turn your skin green, a lacquer paint or resin coating would keep that from happening but using silver in the first place would be the easiest do it though. Thank you and I'm sure your could make one just like it with no problem. Haha 😀👍⚒️

    That was amazing! It is so much fun watching you create. I've been wire wrapping pendants but I want to learn how to set bezel, so I've been watching lots of your videos! Is it a lot harder to set bezel in copper than silver? I like working with copper but one of my friend said that it is harder to solder with copper. Thank you for the amazing video!

    • @GomeowCreations
      @GomeowCreations  6 років тому +2

      I have been hearing a lot lately that copper is harder to solder compared to silver but I really don't feel that it's that different. I did learn how to solder and metal work with copper first so I might just be use to it though. As for the bezel setting, silver is easier to work with seeing that most bezel wires your get are made from fine silver and is a lot easier to bend and mold with hand tools. That being said it's not impossible to do the same with copper and brass as long as you use thin metal. 😎

    That look realy good mate. What did you mean by pickling them? Also do you put anything on your rings to stop them tarnishing over time? I tried a spray on Lacqur on a ring I made but it didn't work to well.

    • @GomeowCreations
      @GomeowCreations  6 років тому

      Thank you very much and pickling is the act of putting metal into an acid bath to remove the oxidation, fire scale and flux residue to make the metal clean. Solder will only flow on clean metal. This also makes it so you can polish and finish your work. As for the Lacquer I use Permalac Clearcoat amzn.to/2kxqute Also I'm working on a full video talking about what pickle is and how to work with it right now so keep an eye out for it in the very near future.

    Hello! Thank so you much for your in depth videos! I am learning so much. Could I ask what type of solder can i use (sorry that is such a newbie question) do I have to only use some jewelry specialty kind of solder?

    • @GomeowCreations
      @GomeowCreations  5 років тому +1

      Hello Lauren! Thank you for taking that time to watch my videos 😀👍
      Don't worry about asking newbie questions, I'm more than happy to help.
      So when it comes to solder a lot of people thing they can use the solder they made for electronics or plumbing. Well these should not be used at all for making jewelry. The solder you want you is silver solder, it comes in different type that melt at different temperatures. Even if you are making things using copper and brass you are going to want to use silver solder. Here is a link to a set that comes with easy, med and hard solder. amzn.to/2CQZ11J
      Hard solder is used first on your work. It melts at the highest melting point so You want to use it for your first solder joints. As an example I used it on the center band and the outer bands for this video.
      Med solder has a little lower melting point. I used this to put the out bands onto the ring. If I used hard solder for everything I would risk the fist solder joints flowing again or even coming apart.
      Easy solder is used only on the last bit of you work if you need to add more solder points. Kinda like small details or if you need to add something and you have already use the other solders.
      Oh and you can't use a soldering iron with this solder so you need a torch. One other thing you need is some kind of high temp flux like this amzn.to/2xczb2l
      I need to make a video on solder and torches and I might work in that soon but if you have any more questions please feel free to ask.

    Do you have to use different types of solder for different metals or is one type good for brass, copper, gold and silver? (Not talking about hardness). Thanks! Love your videos!!

    • @GomeowCreations
      @GomeowCreations  4 роки тому +2

      I use silver solder on everything, copper, brass and silver. For gold you want to use gold solder if you are soldering gold to gold. There are yellow solders that you can use on brass so it will help hide the solder joint and the same with copper but for me they always look more silver in color so I just use the real silver solder. 😁👍

    Should have soldered all the pieces together. With only usin 4 locations on the outsides of the rings, you also have 4 spots where it’s not connected which gives it an unfinished look. The ring itself looks badass, it’s just the fact that you didn’t fully connect the copper outside to the copper inside that makes it look choppy.

    • @GomeowCreations
      @GomeowCreations  4 роки тому +1

    I’m just beginning to get into soldering, and am setting up a wide band silver ring. As it’s too thin a gauge to stand alone, I was going to add some red brass bands on either side. I have difficulty measuring the way you describe (you don’t say what your final measurement represents- I assume it’s millimeters?) anyway- is it possible to join the various bands of metal before bending the whole into a ring? (That was my approach.)

    • @GomeowCreations
      @GomeowCreations  5 років тому +2

      Yeah I do all of my work in millimeters. I guess you could solder the bands together before rounding them but it might end up being harder to get everything to work right but it would be worth a try.

      So after spending a week learning, ive come back and watched your video more thoroughly, and I’m really grateful for the time you took to make it, plus the sharing of your knowledge. At this point I’ve conceded that it’s better to do as you have done, and fit the metals together as rings rather than as flat pieces- I’ve had to scrub some of my details, but that’s ok; I’d rather create something that works.
      Awesome work, and great tutorial! Thanks!
