Most of the larger fish I have been catching over the last 2 years have been caught using live bait. Using live bait can often give beginners and intermediate "Jetfishers" a better chance of coming home with that prize fish.
I must admit when I first started trying to gather live bait, I found every trap and gotcha in the book! But after persevering and learning my own best practices, I am getting to the point where I can jig up enough live bait for every session. I am happy to share some of the lessons I have had to learn the hard way!
So this is just a short tutorial on the gear and techniques I use that have been most successful. The main points are noted below if you want to jump through the video:
The 2 piece Sabiki Rod (Rovex) : 1:00

Yes, "Seagour" not Seaguar. Search Seaguar or Seagour 4286 and you'lll find them.
Hello Paul, I was going back through your trip to the Swains a year ago, and noticed that you cleaned up on the trout with a white bucktail jig. Can you please tell me its name is and where you got it? Many thanks.
Hi Pat. I bought a pack of hooks and flasher rigs before I went up. They were from OM Flashers. I think the real trick is the overhead reel and reasonable light sinker- plus the weather was great so they took us to a reef system that they can't generally fish with any sort of wind due it being so exposed to the elements. So probably a combination of light touch on the overhead to allow the trout to pick up the pillie and run with it before feeling any weight, maybe the flasher, and then fishing a place not fished out!

@@Jetcast Hello again Paul, I am planning a trip to the Swains with Big Cat Reality early next year. What size and colour hooks did you use? The skirts looked pretty white in your video in the mouth of the trouts, but the only white skirts I could find on the OM website were on 3/0 beak hooks. Thanks in advance.
Hi Pat, I purchased a pack they were selling at the time and it had assorted circle hooks and paternosters. The pink hussar is one but really you couldn’t go wrong with any of them. Don’t overthink it with the colours. The fish are still plentiful on the reef and most of the time we were dropping pilchards without flashers and did well too. If it’s your first trip, my advice is take a lot of sinkers and hooks. I use mainly circle hooks because I’ll fish more than one rod and can’t strike both on the ski. But 6/o to 8/o from memory is what we used on the last trip. Last trip I also broke two rods, so take a backup or two!

I had been taught to use paternoster rigs, but realise now that the resistance of the line and the heavier sinker allowed the fish to steal the pillie a lot easier, and my success rate was low in comparison to the number of baits that I used. Do u put the circle hook up through his nose vertical or did u pin it sideways through the cheek
Two schools of thought: it's far simpler vertically as shown in the video. The theory is that if a fish picks the bait up but not swallow immediately (like mulloway often do) , the hook has less of a chance to rip out like it would if it was through the nose sideways and under a little force.. But I generally go through the nose sideways (I think there's a better hook up rate for me) and sometimes I'll use a bait needle to pull a rubber band through and do it that way if I feel less pressured! That's in the 102 course! :) I'll get around to showing that one day soon. Thanks for watching again Brett.

Hi Graham, I got mine from Dinga.com.au. I did a google search (Rovex Sabiki rod) and they are out of stock most places, but do a search around online. My mates got them a few weeks back. Or get onto Jarvis Walker (importers) and ask them if they can get one for you. There are a few different styles, so make sure you get the one that folds to suit your need. Mine folds into almost same lengths, and there are some that the butt comes out and leaves a long piece to contend with. But hope you get one -and get amongst it! Thanks for watching too!

hehe. Sorry, but decided to end it like that because I didn't land the fish! Lost the bloody thing! There was a lot of swearing! :) I think it was a really really big Mulloway, certainly had the biggest head shakes I have ever felt, and I got it up almost to the ski. It felt like got sharked right under the ski. I didn't see anything, just there was one ginormous tug that almost pulled the rod out of my hands and then snapped the line. There had been hammerheads hanging around that reef the week before, so maybe they were still there.. Anyway, thanks for watching the video. (I hope your name means something else than the obvious!)
