I make this pasta salad with Greek salad dressing but I chop the red onions first and then add them to a bowl with the dressing and let the onions soak while I prepare everything else. It takes that harsh bite out of the red onions but leaves the flavor.
I have put blanched broccoli, sliced grllied chicken, grilled shrimp and roasted brussel spouts in my pasta salads, but my favorite is blanched/ roasted asparagus, artichoke hearts, and sauteed spinach!! If you want protein wuthout the meat, use garbanzo and kidney beans. That's what's so great about pasta salads, you can clean the fridge out and make it with what you got!!! I do agree, tri color rotini is the best, but my daughter loves tri colored cheese tortellini . It's such a versatile dish. I've even mixed in a little mayo to the dressing for a creamy texture. 😊

If you want to pump up the volume on the flavor you can take a little bit of the dressing along with the dry spices and toss the pasta with them right after draining and before spreading on the baking sheet to cool. As it cools the pasta will absorb the dressing and flavors from the spices. The oil in the dressing will also make the pasta less sticky/clumpy when it comes time to mix everything together.

Try Kalamata olives next time you make this salad. They are delicious and will definitely have an Italian flare. I make a very similar salad too. Yours looks delicious.

I make this pasta salad and folks love it. Low fat Zesty Italian dressing works well too in this dish. I know it is said not to rinse pasta, but I have too. I rinse it to remove excess starch. I drain the pasta very well. I don’t have a problem with my sauces and seasonings clinging to my rinsed pasta.
I’ve been making this pasta salad for 20 years and it’s always a hit. I agree that Olive Garden dressing is the way to go but if I didn’t have any, I’ve used any Italian dressing I’ve had on hand. I’ve also tried string cheese cut into bite size pieces and I’ve also used shrimp as my protein. Another veg is jarred mushrooms. As someone mentioned earlier, if you are making this in advance, the tomatoes will get soft. So will the cucumbers. I think it’s best that the salad sits at least 4 hours, if not overnight so that the pasta can absorb some of the dressing, then add your tomatoes and cucumber.
Mine is similar with a few variations. I have recently started using Olive Garden Parmesan Ranch dressing, but I don’t add Parm cheese. In addition to the tomato, I add broccoli and small cut up carrots for additional veggies and crunch. Try sprinkling slivered almonds on top just before serving. As you would say, “So good!”.

This is how I make it most of the time and I think it’s perfect but I also like to swap in feta cheese (or feta & grated parm), diced peperoncini, and diced green olives. Pasta salad is super nostalgic to me, like a staple food.
My favourite pasta salad is made with cheese tortellini, and I add chopped artichoke hearts, sundried tomatoes, and olives. I mix it with greek dressing with feta. Sometimes I add some chopped salami or whatever I have on hand.
I made the pasta salad two times with a homemade dressing I took the first batch to my gun club for a block shoot and it was a big hit everybody liked it. Second batch went to a family picnic and it all got gone . Then I found the Olive Garden dressing in store . Next time I’ll use that

I like to add McCormick Salad Supreme Seasoning. It's very similar to all of the same seasonings Angelica uses. This salad is so delicious.
