Gregg Alexander says that "Murder On The Dancefloor" was written as the intended first single (instead of "You Get What You Give") for the New Radicals' 1998 album "Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too".
"There are two 'Murder on the Dancefloors': the unreleased New Radicals record that I gave Sophie a cassette of, and Sophie is combining my harsh lyrics with her lyrical genius."
Gregg also said that the song was written "in my old Mustang in the '90s, upset my car broke down. It would be New Radicals' first smutty single until I came up with 'You Get What You Give.' so much producing this idea of ​​'music in you' that I was worried about going bankrupt finishing 'Murder' too."
