  • Visit to the home of Edgar Allen Poe (not the macabre writer). An industrialist who owned a large brick company in Fayetteville. Behind the house are the remains of a NC aresenal that was used by the Confederacy during the Civil War.

Thank you, excellent video. Very interesting, I looked up and found this was one of five arsenals planned for defense after the War of 1812. Will have to research and see if I can learn location of the others.

Nice video! I worked here from 2006 - 2011 as the education coordinator for the Fayetteville arsenal site. Also gave many, many tours of the Poe House.

Isn’t it ironic that he owned a brick making company, but his house appears to be built from wood?

That's because during the time period, brick homes were not common in this region, but he did have his bricks used in the construction - the chimneys, foundation and walk in front of the house are original Poe brick.

Actually there were five original arsenals, the best known being Harpers Ferry. Seems to be lack of information, but the one at Fayetteville might have been commissioned later?

@@VATravels You’re welcome! I always enjoy your videos when I research for further information, or you recommend a book for me to add to my must read list. I did find a copy of “Disaster on the Potomac “, but I loaned it to my supervisor, who’s also a history fan. He hadn’t heard about it, either.

Springfield Armory (Massachusetts) was the first US arsenal, soon followed by Harper's Ferry, Virginia. Starting in the late 1700s, these were where most of the weapons were manufactured. The Fayetteville arsenal was commissioned in 1836. These later regional arsenals were primarily storage facilities for the weaponry produced at Springfield and Harper's Ferry.
