Hey Jeremy, yes I qualify for being an old sled rider. I am 62 and three years ago I bought my first ever snowmobile. I had no clue what I was doing. The sled is a 97 Polaris Indy 680 ultra xps 3/3. I paid $500 for it and ended up spending probably close to another $300 on it after I found the all the bogies had bad bearings, broken motor mount, new carbides, plugs, bearings and seals for the chain case, welding broken frame and suspension parts, clearing out the mouse nest from the exhaust, repacked the cans, some new exhaust springs, brake pads, new vinyl for the seat, new belts, you get the idea! LOL I haven't put many hours on it as Our Indiana winters have been pretty lame. It is a very fast sled however, at least fast enough for my liking. I've been watching your videos and am envious that you can ride right from your own house, how nice. Keep the videos coming, I enjoy all aspects of the sport including the repair and camping videos.

    Thanks much for sharing.
I currently have my 1993 Cat Jag 440Z scattered across my garage floor. This year, it soon became noticeably "boggy" and eventually stopped. I was not surprised, as it has sat mostly idle over the last 10 years. After investigating the cause, realized my fuel line in the tank, no longer existed.
So. . .it was time to rework the complete fuel system, including a dual carb rebuild. I have performed this routine numerous times with many two cycle engines, but this experience has been significantly more challenging. . . . .
Let me start by saying CARB BOOTs are the child of evil.
Second, buy a specific service manual within 3-5 years of purchasing your sled. Over the previous couple months, I was not able to acquire specific specs, or approaches to my limited Jag Z440 sled. The only readily available service manual for Cat became a 1992 - 1998 compilation (with a 93 Jag 440Z having limited references, and NO Carb specs, so I picked the 93 ZR440 specs (thinking the ZR correlated mostly to chassis)).
Third, re-think your sled purchasing decisions. IF you EVER suspect you will do Carburetor or fuel line work, make sure you do not have to start with taking off your tail light.
Fourth, consider MICE and their ABILITY to build a nest in your exhaust. I kept my sled in our retired barn, and never had a problem before.
Hopefully this weekend I will have crushed all the gremlins, but if not, I am still not giving up, considering it has been one of my most enjoyable challenges ! !
Again, really appreciate you sharing your experience and specific actions to resolve.
    SLED ON

Great video, I sent you an email earlier this week with some sled maintenance tips and power valves was one of them, great to see you got them done. Next get your grease gun out and lube up the rear suspension, driveshaft bearing (behind the secondary clutch) and ski legs in the front adsa arms. Geese obviously lubricates but it also drives water out of all those moving parts that gets in there when snow melts. Nothing better than seeing an old sled performing like new!

Hey Jeremy - never even ridden a "rider forward" sled! Currently have a '99 Skidoo MXZ 440 Fan, a '99 Yamaha V-Max 500 and an '03 Yamaha SX Viper 700. Skidoo is cold blooded as hell, but otherwise a pleasure; can't sort out the clutching on the V-Max to save my life and the Viper could use a little work but runs great and otherwise functions well. Have never even looked at the power valves on the Viper, but based on how it runs (beast-like) I don't think I have a problem. Love old (and even older) sleds, but guessing once I ride a newer style, there will probably be no turning back. I'll tell ya, though, as much as sleds have evolved, and how much more capable/powerful/comfortable they have become, they have never been more fun than they were in the '70's!! You can't beat those old leaf spring sleds for pure, unadulterated FUN!!

Up until last year I rocked the 1979 jag 340 it flew for a couple years and a carb issue and a couple other things made it go wide open into the side of the house. Front end is trashed now. Time for an update on a sled next year I’m thinking a 600 or a 700 triple arctic cat ski doo or maybe a Polaris. Still going the old style next year when I get another one though because I can’t afford the newer style and the older style to me are just as fun because I don’t jump or anything besides tiny jumps and just trails and dirt road riding

Hey Jeremy been watching for a while now love your vids when we have no snow here in nh. Raining right now wtf!!
I have the same sled sounds like the same issue i just had, top end occasionally ran on 1 cyl. Was actually the spark plugs. I was running the "fancy" e3 plugs which arent worth it. You need to run the BR9ECS which have a solid terminal on top. The e3's had a threaded terminal although it wasnt unscrewing, the threads were wearing and losing contact just from the harsh vibrations that are involved. If you check under the spark plug boot youll prob notice the black powdery sut from the spark plug wire arching inside the boot while it periodically loses contact.... running on one cyl.
Changed mine starts 1st pull every time and absolutely screams now.
    RIP IT!!

Well we have like 20 sleds but those are for sale. But the main ones are a 72(I think) Capri 340, 80 spitfire, 9-something 650 Indy, a 9-something wildcat but it was a special edition so there was only 25 made, a 2000 Indy 500(which has to be my favorite, the fugi engine just keeps on running at 7000 miles never rebuilt, a 01 rmk 800 or 700 I forgot but it has the special windshield, and a 05 fusion 900, which also has 7000 miles. Anyways that's all we ride. We don't like the new designs so the 05 was the newest we'd probably drive. But we do have newer sleds in fact we just sold a 2012 pro r vintage edition. Keep up the vids 👍👍

I work on 99% of my own stuff. Only things I send out are shocks and stuff that needs machine work. Local performance engine shop (for cars n stuff) will bore and hone for $100 and +25 for each additional cylinder, you just can’t beat that. And Goodwin Performance does all my suspension work, always pleased with that. I’m rockin a 2000 Xc-700 and a 96 skidoo 670. (Watch my recent 😂😂) and my dad rides a 2002 XC800. I like them a lot because for trail riding, they’re bigger, so they block the wind, which is warmer obv. I do wish I had a newer sled for sending tho, longer suspension and the ability to stand up. At 6’4, standing up on these sleds just isn’t practical

Hello Imaginate! Yes, I'll definitely be posting that trip! I'm just trying to get some snowmobile videos out there while we still have snow on the ground! I'm going to start editing them shortly and hopefully have them up for you all shortly! It was an amazing adventure and I can't wait to share it with everyone! Glad to hear you like the bike adventures! I do as well! :)

Yes I still rock the old sleds. Actually I just got 98 summit x 670 last week! It rips! Now that I know about the power valve clean thing it'll rip even more.

Hey Jeremy, how often should the power valves be cleaned? I never cleaned mine and not sure if the previous owner had or not. I've had my 98 for 3 yrs!

Make sure the red rave adjusters are both set the same. 3 clicks out from bottomed is a good start!.....they have detents that click.

Another tip... I haven't read all the comments here, so maybe this is mentioned already. The BRP service manual calls for a sealant to be applied under the rubber diaphragm (where the big spring is). It also calls for a lubricant to be applied to the valve stem when re-assembling. I don't remember the part numbers, but they are both Molykote products.

We have a 1991 Yamaha bravo and that’s the sled we use for ripping around the property and daily work/chores and we also have a 1991 ski doo mxz 600 and we use that one for going on longer trips and just to ride for fun

Hahaha So many people comment about that thing and I think it's hilarious! It's actually the springs on the side that rub against the steel frame of the slider. There isn't much I can do about it unfortunately. Haha
