A very rare denomination that I recall hearing of was a 5 aureus piece of Augustus that was discovered in Pompei placed in a museum and then stolen. Apparently the only known example.
@@wollin20 never underestimate how stupid some people can be... I hate to say that, but watching society today I think it's an inescapable conclusion...
I feel as we need a video like this for Greek coins, Ive been collecting for quite some time and I still get confused so I had to make a table on Google Docs with all denomination and their characteristics
I never knew about that tiny denomination. More fascinating insights. Once again, truly beautiful gold coinage. I marvel how ancient engravers achieved such impressive detail without lenses to work with. I'm guessing they'd somehow used water as a primitive refractor to enlarge details. It would make a superb episode to show how on earth they'd accomplished it.
A really cool denomination is the roman republican cast “decussis” it is a giant coin and at the time was worth 10 asses, so like a denarius (however the decussis were cast 1-3 years before the denarius).
Please explain the denominations of biblical times!! What is a shekel of tyros? What is the exchange for denarius? What is the value of a pontius pilate prutah? What are other hebrew denominations besides the shekel?
Apart from the Quinarius Aureus, all the others are perfectly affordable for the average collector! The silver sestertius might be a little bit pricier, but all other coins can be had for substantially under 100 dollars. The half quadrans in this video cost me a whopping 13 Euros.

That Aelius gold quinarius is just amazing, even if super-expensive, its value does not even reflects its rarity
This is why I watch this channel. Thank you

Too bad, but this one coin will hopefully reappear in a few years. I mean, they can't be so stupid to melt it !
@@wollin20 Its been missing for quite sometime and as its the only one how could they sell it? Definitely got melted 😢😢😢
@@siisjwj7647 Well, it will take decades before we know
@@wollin20 Love the positivity

I love ancient coins. They just got so much history to them!
They do! Every single coin, as simple as it might be, can take you on a rabbit hole of discovery and curiosities.
Great information. Thanks
10 asses for 1 denarius coin? Damn, asses were cheap in those days
3 grams of silver for a hand overflowing with Asses? Yes please!
12:06 great coin too!😄👍
Awesome content. I have bought some of my coins after watching your videos.
Amazing coins.thank you for this video
Great Video again. I also think that a Video about the late System of constantius ii and constans with maiorina and so on would be very interesting
Its coming next week!
@@ClassicalNumismatics Can't wait to see it. I am sure it will be great
Most interesting, thank you.
Keep up the videos!
I giggled every time you said "asses"
"Every good Roman has always has an As at hand"
Great stuff Leo👍😀

Should have came up with some cool new crown for the double antoninianus to make it distinguishable
Make a video about coins from Pontus. And Mithradatic coins

Complimenti davvero belle Monete e buona spiegazione 🎉 un saluto dal mio canale UA-cam, e dalla Sicilia

Youre worth a quarter ass. Lol great video, thanks man!
Would "A quarter Ass" be worth "Half an Cheek"? :)
You should get one of each ;)

@@ClassicalNumismatics I got a denarius with antonius pius on it for $5 at a coin show. It was amazing.
Do you have anywhere to send pictures of coins to in order to get a date of the coin 🤷♂️
No, I dont, nor would I do this for free :)
Seaby's put out an entire series of books on ancient coins. I found the one on Roman coins to be extremely precise.

Hello, have you heard of Persic gallery

Ancient coins are interesting but collecting any well preserved demands a large investment. Any place to start?
They are not at all a large investment, if you go for common coins. Any place to start? This channel and my Beginners playlist :)
Who can I send pics of my ancient coins to so I can find out about them ?
You can use this channel's beginner playlist and learn how to identify them yourself instead :)
I always start at the As. But I do prefer 2 Ases. I just can’t help myself. Sometimes I’ll see a nice As and just eat it.
About Siliqua.
I have made a video about this denomination already. Look up on my channel page.
