    Always great see new paints enter the market. For that price, bottle size and contrast-like effect, these could easily become my go to paints for terrain where GW contrast paints just aren't a cost-effective solution. Can't wait to get hold of some to try out.

    arguably their Intensity Inks are the first Contrast equivalent GSW brought out, a fair few of them are among my go to paints, Opulentus Black for example is basically Black Templar (just a little less brown skewing) if you're looking for a true black Contrast alternative. Red really does seem to be one of their weaknesses across almost all their various paint ranges, they all come out kinda muggy and their hues aren't particularly enticing either... a lot of their products are excellent, but some you have to sort of bend to your will and make work for you, as it were.

I've not bothered to look for a domestic reseller to order from in-country as my main staple paints are Pro Acryl, Kimera, and a few Vallejo Model Colors. With my inks I predominantly stick with Liquidtex with a few Daler Rowney FWs. Only reason this line appealed to me was to play around with some speed-painting work flows, my flat refusal to touch anything GW not priced appropriately, I have yet to find anything I like from Army Painter, and I didn't want to premix my own set of contrast-like speed washes. I wanted to compare these to my current method of using the PA transparents.

      Huge thanks for the response! Thank you, still have we the old that re-activate, seriously left a model curing for a month, put a brush on it and it’s a mess. Tried mixing with other mediums Vallejo and Windsor and Newton, and it was the Windsor & Newton glazing medium that seems to work with out reactivating to badly, but is better through and airbrush. As it’s a clear gloss medium you spray it on over the dry AP SP and you build on it. Mixing it with the medium does not work the same way as inks unfortunately. Again huge thanks for all the content you do and Luke put out they are always informative (your video on the £50 - £60 pound army was awesome!) huge thanks for taking the time make the and do these reviews, if you get a chance please please, Scale75 instant colour and Vallejo Express in comparison with AP Speed Paint(the new stuff) if you can, please ? • @ThePickleJar

      I've got to imagine so. The contrast range, whilst the most expensive, wins on variety. I think this is something we'll see continue to grow as more companies do their versions and add new colours to their ranges. It can only be a good thing for hobbyists. More variety and choice is always good.

    Honestly I don't really get the hype around contrast and speed paints. The only color they go over well is white which makes fixing any errors really difficult and to me at least that seems like it would just makes them slower to use than regular acrylics or oil paints.
    I tried to see if I couldn't do something similar with regular paints and ended up getting better results by using Kimera Kolors. I basically just thinned them so they're almost a wash and smacked that all over the model as you would with speed paints. Some of the colours do recess shading on their own but I mixed brighter ones with bit of black.
    By the way since you were talking about price comparisons a part of me always dies when I see people use citadel crackle paints because they're paying 5 times more for a worse product when compared to GSW Mojave Mudcrack or even worse using something like stirland mud instead of Vallejo mud which comes in 200ml buckets.

    • @ThePickleJar
      @ThePickleJar  2 роки тому +1

      I think the thing to remember with these, speed paints and contrast paints is that they’re primarily aimed at beginner painters to get stuff done quick. Most hobbyists that have been around a while will know how to make their own similar thing or just won’t be fussed on them because they don’t serve a purpose. And that’s fine. I mainly use them as base coats when I use stuff like this and then more traditional painting over the top for layers/highlights.
      Agree wholeheartedly about the texture paint stuff though, blows my mind though I guess again, some people just don’t know any better.

    • @BarokaiRein
      @BarokaiRein 2 роки тому

      @@ThePickleJar Yeah that's a fair point, though funnily enough I started just couple years back and contrast paints were already a thing and they just confused me. I got couple of them along with regular paints and washes but for the life of me I couldn't figure out what their purpose was until I looked it up on youtube because they just acted so differently from other paints and had really weird coverage.

    • @egnaroelprup
      @egnaroelprup 2 роки тому

      @@BarokaiRein with contrast style paints I have 3 main uses for them that are worth a try
      1. To tint metallics into colour metallics, works extremely well over gold or silver
      2. To cheat glazes (for highlights), just need to do two things, you have to "overhighlight", like ruin the model with edge highlights of white and then blend them down, as long as the basecoat is a similar colour it will work. Also if you're wanting something with multiple tones, for example I have painted sickly, gross looking skin on some of my chaos. Vallejo dead flesh (a very pale creamy green tone) with magos purple over the top, looks fantastic, now I'm sure I could use a purple wash but it has done the job effortlessly
      3. Just as a quick and dirty way to do specific kinds of surfaces, leather, bone, cloth etc
      You can definitely achieve these things (except the metal tinting) with normal paint but the time saved for a similar effect is a pretty attractive prospect

      @@ThePickleJar ok. Cool. Wet pallets being fickle creatures I can individual results may vary. Where I live I have to leave the top ajar or it turns into mixed muddy runny mess. Ive also learned to not saturate mine as per instructions. I find if Im renewing the pallet with new paper etc, its best to do it the night before saturate it get the paper just right and pour off the excess and maybe only adding extra water every other day.

    When I saw these advertised I was confused as to their purpose and watching GSW’s promotional videos didn’t help in the least as they simply showed all of the different bottles without any commentary or demonstration. Several weeks later I’ve finally discovered what they’re for.
    The term dipping ink still perplexes me however as it suggests the models are meant to be dunked in the liquid rather than the ink / wash being either brushed or sprayed on. For that, however, they would need to be in a Citadel-style pot rather than eye-dropper bottle, however large it may be.
    In marketing terms, GSW’s approach seems rather mystifying - you certainly can’t say it does what it says on the tin (OK, bottle) - but thankfully the product itself definitely appears promising and something else I’m now keen to try for myself.

      It is a bit confusing as I thought the same when I got them, especially given the size of the bottles. Guess it's just wanting a unique name so they stand out?

    These paints tend to thin alot with just a little water, putting them on a wet pallet, I suspect, makes them behave and cover differently than straight outta the pot.

    ill still never buy anything from GSW after their bullshit about color shifting paint. Super turnoff to that brand. Does look like a fair value product though.

    Hmm, I never understood why these reviews paint an entire model the same colour. That’s great to see the individual colours but no one paints like that. Wouldn’t it be better to show how colours interact with each other on adjacent areas of the model? These types of paint tend to be very runny and can bleed into areas you intend to paint another colour. With Army painter speedpaint that’s a huge problem because it often runs into recesses of an adjacent area and you can’t retouch the primer without the paint bleeding through. And no one wants to varnish after each colour. Contrast is easy to touch up, as are Instant colours and Warcolor Antithesis but again, each have their own flaws.
    Effectively, painting a model a single colour only reviews the colour and coverage. It doesn’t review the product in any meaningful way for how they’ll be used. The positives, the flaws and all

      I do totally get what you mean. The main purpose of videos like this though IS to show the colours and consistency. A lot of what you’re talking about is down to painting ability.

      @@ThePickleJar This is true. But if you’d used all the colours on a single model you could have saved yourself a load of time in painting, shooting and editing. ;-P

      @@ThePickleJar oh they got very litigious with Vallejo over the "color shift" name.
      I mean I'm not going to stop anyone from buying GSW, but I personally thought it was done in bad faith.
      Besides, Folk Art also uses that term for their iridescent acrylic paint so it was definitely targeted.
