    I think they’re very good. Went for ‘interesting’ colours for more organic subjects, like leathers, green skin etc: Papyrus, Skeleton brown, Elfwood brown, Zombie and Ork flesh. All useful, and thePapyrus may be a better yellow than the one reviewed here. Obviously what you put them on top of is decisive: some of the above are very interesting over a black wash on white or grey primer.

      Thanks for that, I’m going to grab the papyrus for sure, and also try the yellow I have with a white primer.

    Just used some contrast blood angels red through an airbrush on my red corsairs I'm building. Did a zenithal with some light grey over black primer. Looks really good.

      Would the airbrush paints not give better results? I thought the notion of these are for the one coat painters club!

    • @GrayPrimer
      @GrayPrimer  2 роки тому +1

      Sounds great! Do you think you would get the same results with a base or layer red airbrushed over the zenithal, rather than contrast red?

    • @se7enspac3s
      @se7enspac3s 2 роки тому +1

      The contrast works best through an air brush. I like that it's translucent, plus once you figure out how to get ur flow right the contrast effect is wonderful an you don't get any streaks like u do with a brush.

  • @kon2959

    I think the main benefit of contrast is that I don't need to worry about thinning my paints or multiple coats. Some of us just aren't good at painting and contrast does make it kinda easier!

    • @GrayPrimer
      @GrayPrimer  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah, I love that paints like these can give a sense of depth without needing to worry about adding multiple, separate layers of highlight and shadow. They’ll never be as good as a layered paint job, but I think they’re brilliant for people who don’t want to take that approach!

    I've been using the GSW Papyrus dip over Scale 75 Bone Charm for my 40k Ulthwé Eldar and so far it's looking fairly good. I will probably tweak it with Citadel Skeleton Horde painted into the recesses and some highlights but so far Papyrus and Bone Charm work well together. It creates a yellowy bone colour which works quite nice when old Ulthwé had golden yellow as a spot colour and the new method is a really pale bone. This sits between the two which I find quite pleasing. I'm willing to give more dipping inks a try now they have a bigger range but I need to think carefully about which ones I will actually need.

    I don't think a single one of these 'contrast' paints are designed to cover such a dark grey, as far as I'm aware a light bone, white or the lightest of greys are what's recommended with a zenithal prime being optimal. Would be good to see them over a lighter primer

    • @narkhall2

      I have enjoyed them over Halfords Gray Spray. But the Yellows and Reds do appear to suffer on a darker Gray.

      The difference on my white palette paper is pretty stark when compared to the results over the grey undercoat. I’m going to try them over white primer and Tamiya’s light grey next. Thanks for checking out the video!

    One thing to keep in mind for Dipping Ink is that some are meant to be painted over with multiple coats. Not really a one coat paint, but they do get better with multiple coats.

    It was a good idea to go for red, yellow, blue, but you probably would get better results with magenta, yellow, cyan (azure). If you added in a bottle of black, and a few empty bottles, you'd be able to mix most of the colours in the range.
    Also, it's a bit odd to say the blue leans towards indigo when the blue IS indigo. Just sayin' :)

    Given the cost per ml, these would have to be pretty bad to not be well worth it, and these seemed to perform just fine. I’ve been toying with the idea of trying this kind of painting, and I think GSW is the way to go. On another note, I suspect the yellow needed a second coat to make the true color show. Where it pooled up, you could see it was much yellower. I think that may be fairly common with these dipping inks.

    • @GrayPrimer

      Other people on YT are testing them, check their videos out too to have another point of view.
      But as Gray Primer said, just the ratio of paint for the price paid is worth buying them.
      It was the same with Contrast paints, I saw plenty of YT reviews and it went from meh to great depending on the application, one or more coats, primer colour,...

    Contrast are also used in airbrushing as they are traslucent. Did you try them in that way? How do the dipping inks behave in airbrush? Cause I'm not interested in usign them with normal brush.

    There's less hype around Scale 75 Instant Color because they are just washes that require at least 2 coats for decent coverage (hardly instant) and many of us who backed the Kickstarter got stung by the marketing

    Good video, only thing is where you complain about the red going on lightly and needing a second coat, to then saying that the contrast paint didn’t contrast as much? Seems like if the red had a second coat it maybe similar to the contrast, but wasn’t clear?

    • @GrayPrimer
      @GrayPrimer  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah the GSW red was a bit strange, acting much more like a thin, true ink than the other colours in the range, which acted more like traditional Citadel contrast paints. I used a stirring stick on the bottle of GSW red and it started performing better, so maybe it was just in need of a comprehensive shake!
