It's a spit for turning meat over a fire and the hanging pins are to secure the meat so it does not spin or slip. You could cook a whole lamb, etc.

Sean, it's a "yes" to render. You've tried cleaning the stones and they're still smoke blackened. Rendering will really make that area look so much tidier.

A grey render would look nice. The fireplace stones are so dark, putting a white render would be too much contrast. 😊 The brackets look great on the posts, I can't wait to see it finished with copper items!

It's a spit for turning your piglet. Use the lower arm for another shelf. You are not walking under it, you will be bending over to tend the fire. My motto ( you can never have enough shelves).

  • @ruthkirkparick3535

Is that a spit--to roast a pig over the open fire? That's what the corkscrew handle made me think. I'm glad you put the brackets on the front to support a shelf. That makes more sense to me.

I think that you should leave the stones in the chimney as they are. They are dark but that is part of the history of the cottage. Also, the stove with a nice fire will cheer it up. Plus if you cover the ceiling beams then it the original chimney stones will be one of the few character pieces left in the cottage. 😊 Sam would probably be the best judge. I’d definitely go with what she says.🤔😄

I actually like that back section how it is. I do understand why you want to render it as you will have done so much work on the rest of the room. So my recommendation is to finish all the rendering that you already had planned and then decided if you still want to do the back wall of the fireplace.
It certainly is coming together very well so I have no doubt that you will make the right decision.

Yes to the render. Brighten the room up as limited light. Front shelf wrapping around the sides would be nice. Routered top and bottom with curved corners. Spit is lovely. My aunt painted the inside a dark green heritage emulsion and it looked fantastic with feature lighting and multifuel stove. With there 7ft wide Normandy fireplace they had the fireplace sandblasted and a new granite hearth cut and dressed to look more natural. It looked fantastic. The rear granite blocks were huge! Amazingly fit builders then!

The grouting you did around the new window to your house looks splendid! You spent a lot of time fixing everything around the new window inside and outside. A person wouldn't have thought that all the tlc was needed, but watching your video, I know there is a great quantity of time needed to finish around a new window installed in an ancient home. I like your old brackets for the front of the fireplace and bending down that metal piece. The long metal thing is a spit to roast over the fire. Very nice looking and old. You make the decision on the rendering of the interior of the fireplace. It is your property, so no one should criticize what your decision is. I respect that. And yes, that chateau kitchen had such a magnificent collection of copper to cook with. Hello from Yakima, Washington, U.S.A

It's always a satisfaction to find a use for something we have for a long time! If you keep the bottom of the brackets curved it could be useful to hang things ( like a hook to dry clothes near the wood stove or for the gear for the fire...), it could work by just soften the bottom edge...
I personally would prefer a pointed back wall for the chimney like a sort of recall of the top (maybe with a little darker grout?)...

I think rendering the fireplace is the right decision. There are more lovely features, like the wooden posts and the exposed stones, that will get more of the spotlight against a calmer background. Otherwise it may become a bit dark and overly busy. It'll also give a nice contrast with the fireplace itself. I think it'll be well balanced with the back of the fireplace rendered.

Yes render the fireplace, it will improve the look.
I liked the 1st bracket, a bit fancy but I could see it working well there.
By having the shelf in front of the fireplace it blocked the walnut wood, which has a warm hue.
But it seems like you have a lot of copper pieces and a large front shelf would be just right.
Sean you seem to have " spring" in you, your smile is a little bigger and in your step as well is more upbeat.

Those iron brackets would look good on the front. Wide enough to put some copper or brass items on. Since you will be having a wood stove in the fireplace I think a render would make a good back ground to make the stove stand out. It will also match the render on the other walls and again add to the reflected light. That is an iron you do a roast on in the fire. Make a good pig on a spit barbecue in the garden for a big party.
