Here on my channel, I am renovating a 250 year old stone cottage on my property in Normandy, France. By using traditional, low-waste and off-grid methods, I'm aiming to keep the charm and character of this old building, and turn it into a furnished, finished home for family whilst keeping environmental impact as low as possible. There will also be content on living in France, visiting beautiful rural places, hunting for antiques, gardening, and more! Hit subscribe if you would like to keep up with my journey, and hit the notification bell to be alerted when we go LIVE where we have a first viewing of the video as it is published with a live chat so I can answer all your questions! See you in Sean's World.
Have you thought of going over to Ryan’s World and asking Ryan if you can purchase some of his tiles? He removed so many of them and has them just sitting in his renovation.
I think you mean "Life of Ryan". I had exactly the same thought. I know he gave quite a lot of the tiles to Michael for his bathroom floor in the cottage.
@@ronniemensch2400 yes, Life of Ryan, thanks. And yes, he must have lots left.
Lovely wife, lovely life. Sean you create a lovely world.
I love seeing Sam in your videos! She adds a bit of class and everyone knows she will help keep you from hurting yourself. I call that a win/win!
LOVED THIS VLOG ✅✅✅✅✅✅
Really cool Sean. I bit late watching. Plenty of rain over here to.
Sean you can hang those on the wall and have lights behind it as if they were windows. It would create an amazing feel for the room
My favourites are the two gothic panels with the coloured glass. They will look fantastic in the cottage. So nice to see Sam again.
In the bathroom as a cubert .
No walls! 😊
Too small of a space for walls
Ryan has some tiles gave them to Michael no harm in asking. I like the stained glass but not the rail I would keep looking. A reclamation yard might also have some tiles and or rails. You could replicate those windows another pair I think also a window in the kitchen would be nice somewhere in there or outside of it. I realize you have windows at the door but the view on the other side of this building is beautiful.
Nice finds. 👍
I would make a side table to sit my coffee on. Gothic panels could also be used on either side of the door going into the bathroom. I was also thinking those metals swirly pieces you didn't buy could have possibly been used has a handrail on the ladder but you left without them.
Ooh, what a good idea, they'll fab in the kitchen divider! 😍 Lol Sam, bet the air was a bit blue! 😄 (We've all been there I'm sure - I know I've had a hissy or two whilst trying to do DIY 😬)
Cracking video Sean. Love those Gothic style windows, and the little iron stool to be, for the fireplace. And what a fabulous shop that was 👍
When Sam waved from the green house, I waved back! LOL
Good decision. Too tight of a stair landing causes frustration, plus it looks right from across the room.
Thank you for sharing 😊
It's never easy but you're right the extra width on the steps will be worth it. As for railing between your Lounge/ kitchen/stairs have you thought of Rebar ? Painted black would be nice but not sure what the cost in France would be.
Yoh! Many nice pieces of metalwork but some expensive.
Liked what you bought (would use those glass panels inserted in doors (front and bathroom). Nice idea as a seat - I was only thinking of scraping your shoes off on it. Keep moving forward and it's nice to see Sam in the videos❤
Love this channel!! I miss seeing your son!
What a full day, Sean! Making like a stone mason, cups of tea with Sam and antiquing too! Yes, Putting those glass panels between the kitchen and the snug is a great idea. That way you can enjoy the light coming through from either side.
I think the iron stand might have been made for tools to lean against, so they would be close at hand but not on the ground. Might have been for the blacksmith’s personal use, or maybe for a farrier. About the window panels-they look to me like they could be from a stage set, with the paint giving the effect of stonework. Great finds!
Good decision to widen the stair landing Sean. The glass panels are charming and without a doubt I know you will find the perfect place for them in the cottage. Hi Sam, always good to see you. 🙏
Absolutely gorgeous Gothic red-yellow-green glass panels, Hercules! So very rich looking. Your kitchen will be a tiny jewel. The iron
base will be perfect for a fireside stool. I first imagined the base being used in the kitchen, on your counter, to be seen as a towel bar, or utensil hanger, on continual display, but do concur as a stool base. I just wanted to be able to gaze upon the well-made
blacksmithing. What a quaint showpiece and complement to the metal of the glass panels. Love the ancient paint of the arch-tops. I, too, love old iron, copper, metal. Your cottage is going to be like an authentic, elegant mini-chateau; can't wait to see the final view. It was also nice to see Lady Sam, earlier in the video, sharing a cuppa with you. Happy day! Also, I enjoyed watching you adding
the large stone to your stair-base. You are an clever stonemason, for sure.
That fabulous length of railing would be great as a divider at the bottom of the stairs - dividing the kitchen & stairs rather than a wall. Just my opinion.
Half walls are needed for the cupboards etc
Ah, pity though.
Sean, you are such a hard dedicated worker on your cottage! Do be watchful of your back. Love from Pennsylvania 💕🌷🐻
The right tiles will come along. Patience!
You could hang the glass panels above the kitchen sink, lights behind them so it looks like you’re looking through a window. It will give you extra light for cleaning up.
I was thinking the exact same thing…above the sink as a feature on the back wall.
You have worked so hard on your historic properties!
Thanks 👌
I am glad you are widening the steps. I do think they need to be wider to balance the space. Thin landings, steps and paths can look mean and squeezed. A more generous landing will give you a greater sense of space in the room as you have already identified - this is what balance is all about. You also have the space for it so that is great. It is tricky "carving" up a one open space into different uses = so you have a 1. Entry 2. Landing and staircase 3. Kitchen 4. Fire 5. Sitting room 6. Dining = AND it is NOT a huge space to start with. I think you are doing a fantastic job not only designing this space but then creating it. xxg Brisbane Australia
Nice glass panels! What about putting them upstairs? It has natural sunlight and could be a pretty divider of sorts.
Poor Sam. She was so excited to go with you, but looked deflated when she had to stay home.
Sean, I see those red chairs as ideal seating for your bar!
No walls, just backs of kitchen cupboards.
Sean, those window panels are beautiful. That little stand will be beautiful as a fireside seat. It was nice to see Sam. She takes good care of you. Hopefully, you will find the tiles you want later on.❤
Hi Sean? I had my popcorn ready to go and it was getting late. I thought Id have to get off to bed not hearing your ever so charming voice. After all a girl needs her beauty sleep. So I thought I'd try one more time to see if the new video would be available. Low and behold here you are. GREAT VIDEO.
Thanks Ruth 👌
Super cool windows!
Great video. I enjoyed going to the brocante with you and shopping with my eyes. Sometimes, you need to buy rare tiles when you run across them and NOT when you need them. The glass panels you bought are to die for. Just gorgeous!!! Hello from Yakima, Washington, USA.
Love those stain glass windows. Possibilities are endless for you cottage
Hi Sean, that beautiful handrail would be perfect as a divider for the stairs and kitchen, instead of a wall. Going to be special when you're finished.
I agree! It allows light to pass through an already quite dark ground floor area. Altho it's $125, it would look stunning next to the granite steps.
I think it will look fantastic!
The window panels are going to be beautiful! I would have the frayed part on the left though. Having the blank bits in the middle seems to accentuate them.
As for the seat, I could picture the wooden seat being beautiful, like your cutting boards. Question, will the metal get hot being that close to the fire? Better not wear a dress or shorts (if you're the one in a skirt, my lips are sealed😅)!
I was so excited about the white rails and I could picture them on each side of the stairs in front of the cottage.😢
Really liked mini stove😊
Morning Sean!!! The word you were looking for was Gothic Tracery - the shapes that define gothic style
Troy
Yes l realised after doh
Love the illuminated windows.
Hi Sean lovely to have time to watch you doing your favourite thing. Just to mention Ryan has lots of terracotta tiles. Im sure he will maybe help you out
It's always fun to see what you bring back from your excursions.
Great brocante finds! Too bad about the tiles but as you say hey ho. Sam always brings her charm along with a cuppa when she visits the cottage. I do like the glass panels in the walls of the kitchen. They will be a lovely feature.
Those 2 window panels I would actually put up as a window and let the sun shine through them. That iron piece looks like a saw horse to me maybe in the loo to hold magazines and towels. Have a great day
Do you and Sam have tea at around the same time everyday? I love that you take time out to be together☺️💕
Yes we do
The stairs are going to look Great
With my mobility issues there are to many floor levels, but I get where you are going. That pan you picked up I would say was for catching fat drippings. What size that piece of meat must have been. Like you said it must have come from a large chateau.
Sean, since you have no windows on the back wall, you could build a window frame with LED back-lighting to house your stained glass windows. This would sit above your proposed Davenport and give the effect of having an actual window with the LEDs providing faux light.
Those would make great Stair handrails. :D you did get the glass panels- love those. Beautiful. ! love it !
You are amazing at fitting stones, such beautiful work. You have a very good eye for treasures 💝
How about using those cast iron pieces as a porch canopy / cover. Just add canvas or fabricate and insert glass somehow .
And the gothic doors could be used as upper cabinet doors in the kichen, and have lights inside the cupboards for a nice evening glow.
I thing cutting off the kitchen from the livingroom will make the spaces even smaller.
I thought the same , they would make a beautiful canopy ❤
Using the glass panels as kitchen cupboard doors is brilliant!
saddle stand
Things are coming along really good. Keep going
I love the glass panels.
Check with Ryan, see if he has any
If you decide the “stained glass” windows don’t let enough light through they would make great kitchen cabinet doors!
I love those glass panels, and they let through much more light than I had thought they would. The trompe l'oeil painting on them that looks like stone is also really nicely done.
Behind every good man, is a better woman. 😊 you’re a lucky man.
The steps look amazing ❤
Sam is so lovely❤
Sean i think your idea to place the panels between the kitchen and living room/snug is perfect! They are beautiful
Metamorphic change…love you window idea
BEST TO YOU
I like that lovely old wrought iron stand would be great by the fire, but for drying mittens, socks, scarves, and boots. I wouldn't cover it with a seat. I'd wire brush off all the white paint and finish it with some type of blacksmith's finishing wax.
Those two gothic panels are wow !!!
Excellent episode and progress! 😊❤
Trust your guts! You have years of experience!
Windows are Gorgeous ❤🇨🇦
I like the idea of a fireside seat for the iron piece but it would also make a great little side table for a cup of tea 😁
Love those windows. You could do a cabinet with a lights in it and those as doors. I did a fake window with a light box in my tiny kitchen after an addition was added
Oh I really like the ironwork supports too! Antique shopping vicariously through you Sean 😊
hand rails! First thing I thought too!
The metal curly rods I think painted black would look beautiful on the outside cottage steps. It would differentiate the building a bit more.
lol id make a false window box on the wall and light the windows up my 1st thought for the wrought iron curls was damn they would have looked great as safety railing for the fireplace area
It’s going to be lovely, a lot of hard work but well worth it ❤ so many things to see at the brocante, oh makes me want to take a trip 😂
from one Sean to another: You were talking about walls interfering with stones for base of stairs. Why would you use walls, especially in a small space? Keep up the good work!
I like your measuring stick, cleaver boy. This is too funny I wrote this comment before Sam called you a cleaver boy. I realized I could watch you work all day. Those iron pieces could work as hand rails for the kitchen steps. The panels will look nice in the wall. Can't wait to see the seat.
'cleaver boy'....!?
... What.... like a butchers apprentice, maybe......!?!?
😁
Earl Gray tea sounds so good ❤
Room would look nicer with no interior doors, more open and inviting.
I saw those white painted metal things as handrails right off the bat! Great minds think alike 😁. The gothic colored glass should look nice in the kitchen. Good find!
I really think it would look good right there
Hello Sean and Sam
Hi
Hi Carson, glad you enjoyed the Video about D-Day. There will be big celebrations in Normandy next year for the 80th anniversary of VE day, so hopefully we can do a video about that too. Thanks for watching 😊
I'm trying to convince my dad to go see it ourselves hopefully we will
Great timing Sam, with tea!❤😊
The wrought iron rail that you showed with a wooden rail would be nice used as an open half wall dividing the kitchen from the snug or as wall at bottom of stairs dividing the kitchen. It would have a more open plan look rather than using blocks and timber for a full height wall which would make small closed off rooms.
I like most of what you just said. But the walls around will not be going all the way to the ceiling.
Yes they would love lovely at the entrance to the cottage , you must buy them.
The wrought iron metal work is screaming out to be a table, at least it is screaming that to me!!!
Ha!.... not really screaming anything much, is it...!
... It's just a bit of rusty metal which could be any number of things.......
@@andymccabe6712 Actually, once Sean cleans it up, maybe paints it black and puts a nice piece of oak on the top it will be a unique table for his cottage.
Hi Sam and Sean. I love watching you renovate the cottage, but I love watching you buy special items for it also. ❤ to my adopted family.
Those wooden items could be used for tiebacks for curtains
Excellent decision to make the bottom landing wider 👍
I’m glad you are enlarging the stair landing. Great finds, but sorry about the tiles.
If you separate the kitchen from the sitting area that much, the space might feel small. If I were using the kitchen, I would want to see the fireplace, and to visit with whomever is there. I like the earlier ideas of incorporating the windows into front doors. It adds light. You could even make matching doors on two cottages. The other very good idea is to use them in the bathroom wall, to let light through while maintaining privacy.
Hi Sean- would suggest those glass panels would make great front door conversation pieces. Suggestion.
The panels are a really special find and will look beautiful wherever you put them. I also love a good Lady Grey tea, although, English breakfast is my favourite. Preferably Twinnings. ❤🐨
Coming along nicely. The brocante sure offered a lot of nice things.
Sam has such a beautiful smile. Love seeing her in your video's.
😊 thank you
When you were looking at that railing, I was thinking that would make a cool divider from the kitchen area if you had more of it or something like it rather than a solid wall
The iron smithy stand...put in bathroom to hang towels, bath mat by freestanding claw foot tub. Painted black to match the claw feet.
I would put the panels hanging in upstairs opening overlooking kitchen...the red color seems too harsh to be close up on the first floor overlooking the snug.
That was fun Sean thaw. Hugs from NY
