It's so sad cause as soon as it's over, Gordy appears genuinely confused. Like he couldn't remember what happened or how everyone ended up dead. He looked at Jupe and seemed like he was asking "what happened?" It's why Chimps should never be made as pets. You may think they are tame and may never hurt you, but they can. This scene is both terrifying and sad at the same time. Clearly Gordy had a friendship with the family, only to be spooked from the first balloon popping and probably thought it was something else, like a gunshot perhaps. Which caused him to freak out. When the last balloon popped, it caused him to snap out of it and not remember what he did. Only for him to get shot dead while trying to communicate to the boy who he saw as his friend. It goes to show you why it's stupid to have dangerous animals around without the proper care. I'm a believer that we us humans have the abilities to help animals who are in need, but I am not a believer in capturing animals who are not in need and force them to be entertainers

If you look at all the chimp related documentaries from Cid Dwyer on youtube, you will see that chimps in the entertainment industry have been horribly mistreated. A lot of movie chimps came from the same breeder that Travis the Chimp came from. They are intelligent enough to understand that they are captive, but still animals, which leads them to lashing out. Captivity is awful for a chimp's mental health, and so is being forced to perform. So they eventually lash out

The consensus seems to be that it's a learned/rehearsed gesture that he'd get a treat for, or he's trying to communicate *something* to the kid.
The movie's whole message is to not humanize animals, so it doesn't make sense for Peele to write the chimp as apologetic for what it did.

Yes! With Gordy, it's almost undoubtedly the fact that he never made eye contact/had his eyes veiled by the table cloth that made him feel special, thus leading to the second incident. Jupe felt he had some mastery over the unknown/untamed that he could 'train' Jean Jacket to come when summoned, which turned out to be very untrue. As a security guard, without a gun or a pepper spray here you can only call the cops and get the hell out of here if you can. No human can take a chimp hand to hand and expect to not get seriously injured or killed.

This scene is so sad because when he snaps out of his rage, he doesn't remember what happened, when he sees the boy, he tries to show the boy what happened or is trying to ask what happened, only to get shot in the head

Easily the best scene in this incredible movie. The overall symbolism as well as the dipiction of the animal is nothing short of genius. I'm positive this was inspired by the real life story of Travis the Chimp, which really brings this story to life because...it DID happen.

Trying to control nature or its creatures is a fools errand. It is wild, unpredictable, it can unleash its fury at a whim, in many different forms. You must respect its power, or suffer its wrath.

So I don’t know if the shot at 4:14 is meaningful in anyway but I interpreted it as further but also subtly hinting that Gordy is supposed to be an analogy for Jean jacket as the lampshade somewhat resembles Jean Jacket’s final form.

Easily the most disturbing scene in Nope. It becomes that much more terrifying when you realize it was based on a real life incident involving a pet chimp turned deranged killer. It goes without saying, wild animals should not be exploited for entertainment (human beings as well for that matter). Apparently Jordan Peele strongly identifies with Gordy in this scene
