He cost Liverpool the league that year. They were on fire, scoring for fun, yet he still prioritized not conceding goals in away games over scoring more goals than the other team.
Anyone remember the game away to Arsenal that year? 1-1 with about 20 minutes to go and Arsenal have a man sent off. What does Rafa do? Take off a striker for a defender and sees out the draw.
11 draws that season is why Liverpool didn't win the league. Of those 11 games, most of which were away games, if they had lost 6 and won just 5 of them, they would have been champions.
Rafa treated the league like a 2 legs cup competition where an away draw is a good result. That shit doesn't work in a 38 game league.

It's not the UCL knockouts where you happily accept draws in away fixtures. To win the league you have to go for a result in all 38 matches. He played ultra defensive in away games even when a result was possible. Even if the refs favored United, your destiny is in your hand.
That’s what separates league winners from just top 5 gotta be clutch and close out all winnable and possible points

Liverpool battered United at Old Trafford 4-1 only a couple of months after this and United were bottling it until Marcheda saved them with a late win at Villa. Fergie can thank Marcheda for the title as United were finished before that stoppage time winner. The reason Liverpool drew games was down to injuries to Torres and Gerrard and lack of squad depth. Nothing else.
We lost to Fulham 2-0 and Liverpool was worried that we might lose it after going down 2-1 vs villa Liverpool bottled vs arsenal and other games
