    I think that extra chromatic note also helps playing in major tonalities sound less bright and a little more pretty.

    Jeff, thanks for demystifying bbop scales, especially emphasizing the down beats to sync w the chord tones by adding the 8th note.

    this video is genius...I honestly knew none of this and was very wary and afraid of bebop scales thinking it'd take me forever to learn them! I have never had a teacher for jazz (I play alto saxophon as well), and so your videos are really helping me to grow in my improvising/understanding of jazz!!

    And I can't wait to get on the root again

    I think it would have been worth to mention that the most common (I believe) bebop dorian scale is actually with an extra major third and not with an extra major seventh. It might also be easier to remember an play it that way, as in a ii-V context, that extra note from the corresponding bebop scales is actually the same. E.g. ii-V to CMaj7: the major third of the D-7 (ii) is #F and the major seventh of the G7 (V) is also #F.
    Else, congratulations for the nice videos: keep it up!

      I was scouring the comments before mentioning that myself, I was going to ask about it. His approach still works to land on chord tones, and I was wondering if it really made much of a difference in practice. For instance, that puts the 6th of the minor chord on the downbeat. Not a bad little note against the minor tonality, but not one of the base chord tones.
      Your way is how I've seen in from Jaimie Aebersold, who gives credit to Dave Baker, whose books indeed align the same way. Also, that is how they are shown in Mark Levine's "Jazz Piano" and "Jazz Theory" books.

    I found myself playing that Maj7 scale on electric guitar just a few days ago. I was playing loud gritty rock over trancey keys. Actually I guess it wasn't quite that scale cuz I was in lydian but I kept throwing that flat 6 in like a sort of blue note, and somehow it just really felt right. Now I guess try the same but with a flat 7...
    Anyway, aside from whatever I do with it, TBH I'm just really stoked to see where musicians continue to go with the blending of genres

    your minor bebop scale is different from the Abersold method. In minor (Dorian), the extra note is between the -3rd and the perfect 4th(add the major third) In other words, it is the same as the Dominant bebop scale but you start on a different note. C7 bebop is the same as G- bebop

    The "concept" is to have an 8 note scale so you can "hit" on the notes on the down beat. My advice? Learn the "Blues Scale" which in C would be C Eb F Gb G Bb C which is a 6 note pattern and make that your FIRST thing. We still have this 6 note scale which conflicts with 4/4 time and thus, it's worth it to grab TWO MORE NOTES! My suggestion? (and something this post inspired me to do) - Add the 2nd and the major seventh (of course you can experiment with others) and have AN EIGHT NOTE PATTERN that repeats per octave instead of a 6 note BLUES scale. Unlike the presenter in this case, I recommend starting from the "blues scale" and learning what "flavor(s)" you enjoy for your CHOICE OF 2 added notes. So, in summary, after learning your major scales, learn the "blues" scale and "pick two notes" to keep you in 8. I'm going to work on it for myself for my own self improvement. You can choose any extra notes, but the idea of actually adding them and practicing your scales alternatively with "8" makes things interesting. I remember I used to hear a NON-STOP series of 16th notes at bright tempos and wonder how these be-bop cats pulled off these "Charlie Parker" like solos. Well, now you/we know. I hope you still appreciate them as they are the foundation of Be-Bop which was just "Rag Time" interpreted and adapted to "swing". Keep it Spicy! facebook.com/peeweediamond

    • @gesswatt45
      @gesswatt45 Рік тому

      Yeah, that's a great idea, there's never a wrong time for the blues, fits with the video and the bebop scale as well
      Learn the blues scale is excellent advice for all jazz or rock players, that can be your first thing
      In C that would be C Eb F Gb G Bb C which is a 6 note pattern
      & grab two more notes, switching up to the bebop scale, switching back to the blues scale, yeah
      The blues scale in C has six notes, so adding Ab and Db gives us a bebop scale --- its Ab mixolydian, or Eb dorian
      The six-note C blues scale C D Eb F Gb G Bb C ---> the eight note Ab mixolydian which is Ab Bb C Db Eb F Gb G Ab
      which is also the same eight notes as Eb dorian .. .. .. Eb F Gb G Ab Bb C Db Eb
      Great video, thanks!

    For the Cmaj bebop scale if A (6th) is a chord tone(downbeat) and the B (maj7) is not(upbeat), does this imply that the underlying 'I' chord must be C6 or can it still be maj7. Im trying to understand how that would feel and be used with Cmaj7. Would you run your lines so that the 6th does not correspond to a down beat? For example, heres 4 eighth note line 7th(down), flat6, 5(down), 2

    Why would anyone play a scale during a solo? While chord tones on strong beats have a grounding effect, they have very little to do with the upper harmony notes that define the bebop sound. On a dominant chord I prefer the half tone whole tone scale,

    Hey jeff, great video, I still have a doubt though, if I'm improvising over a tune, should the bebop scale be played over each chord of the progression, i mean, the bebop scale of each chord, or should it be applied only to the chord the tune is? Thank you man, really appreciate the work you are doing.

    • @christiankrueger221
      @christiankrueger221 7 років тому +3

      I'm not as much of an expert as this guy, but you want to play the respective bebop scale for each chord in the progression. So if the progression has a C major chord, then you play the C Major bebop scale. If it then has a Dminor7 chord then you play the D Minor bebop scale. One thing that you want to keep in mind though, is that some of the chords may relate to each other modally, or have flat 9s or other alterations, that may take precedent in terms of what you emphasize harmonically. So I definitely have questions about how those scenarios play out as well.

    perhaps people sound preposterous and mystifying while explaining jazz principles just because they do all of a tour through classical terminology, before firstly giving the point of the principle; the point here, however (as you actually show), is quite simple: you introduce an extra note so that this (might) help with the way you want to accomodate the scales on given rhythmic patters, and that's all!

    I don't believe that down beat theory. As long as the next note is under a 2nd apart, and is a chord tone, the down beat note will sound like a Passing tone, and the up beat will sound like a suspended chord tone.

      no he said the only difference between the major bebop scale and the minor bebop scale is that the minor scale has a minor third, whereas the major obviously has a major third. In both respective scales you are simply adding a Maj 7 as the "8th note".
