  • This is one of my FAVORITE techniques, and I'm so excited to share it with you in this lesson. Let me know how it goes!
Gear (but does it really matter?):
    Reeds - amzn.to/2byJByQ
    Ligature - amzn.to/2b1uYll
    Mouthpiece - bit.ly/2acqB6Z
    Saxophone - Selmer Mark VI SN: 111XXX - bit.ly/29W1Srz
    EWI - amzn.to/2b1EKXj
    Midi Controller - amzn.to/2bdjNtd
Hair (the most important gear of all): Bb Texture by Bumble and Bumble - amzn.to/2byJROm

Great lesson Jeff; very interesting concept. I have heard jazz gurus using this on recordings; now I can hear what's going on, thanks! I don't play sax; I'm a guitarist. I really enjoy your lessons and channel; you're an excellent player/teacher.

Fascinating tool in the toolbox. I will definitely try to pull out this spanner at some point. I suppose I need to change my perspective on improvisation. I always thought great improv is just that...improvising over anything...without necessarily knowing the harmony below..and try to let your ear guide you. This is not necessarily wrong, but it probably takes years / decades to get there. But what you are pointing out is that one must carefully study the harmony , memorize it even, and the improv really is playing around with notes to a pre-planned structure you worked out before. Anticipating the changes is a great tool. Thank you Jeff.

For sure. You can definitely improvise by ear only, but know the theory behind it can help A LOT. Keep up the good work.

Cool, I think I've been doing this here and there unconsciously, usually on simple stuff that I'm really familiar with. I just tried actively applying this approach with a couple standards I've been working on and wow, it really does help tie things together. Thanks for the info!

Hey Jeff, like your channel. I think these anticipations work for other reasons too but I’ll state the obvious. Playing Bb7 chord tones over F7 yields Bb 4th, Ab flatted 3rd, F 5th, D 13th, all related to the F7. kind of like playing an Fm I into a Bb7 v chord. The b2 works anyway as an outside line against the chord. But anyway, good stuff thanks for posting

Another classic device is landing 1/2 step ABOVE the chord you're approaching with a big jazzy arpeggiated chord ( just a beat or so before the destination chord) & sliding down to the target chord. It's very common & popular in Bluesy Jazz / Jazzy Blues.

Congrats Jeff, teaching others is a very noble thing especially when you approach it in such a humble and straight forward fashion. Curious: what gizmo are you using to add reverb or tremolo to your sound? This is not to say that you have a mature and full sound but adds spice whatever it is.. Anyhow keep up the excellent work that you are doing..

This is great info, and I really like using this technique on tunes with odd or fast changes to "push" the harmonic motion forward and give more momentum to the section, but I have sort of the opposite issue. I have difficulty making interesting solo lines over tunes with very static or slow changes. I can make it sound good but I find that it's tough to create truly interesting lines over 4 or even 8 bars of the same chord, such as in All Blues. I know I can always insert turnarounds or "mini ii-V-I's" but this is often too dissonant on such tunes. Any advice?

As a guitar player I envy horn players who can switch keys really quickly. A guitar player can just use the same scale patterns up and down the fretboard, i.e. first fret for the F7, sixth fret for the Bb7 if using a minor penatonic scale.

You can get weird and use C melodic minor. If you harmonize the whole scale, you have both of those chords in it. Harmonizing up the scale on F, you'd have F A C Eb G B D. For G, you'd have G B D F A C Eb.
Let me know how this works out for you!
