Was Sally Jackson A Bit TOO Real?

- I did a rewatch of Percy Jackson recently as I’m really excited for the second season and it got me thinking a lot about the book to screen differences. Not the run of the mill differences like the humour or anything like that, but in particular regards to Sally Jackson. She’s quite different from her book counterpart, not to mention her relationship with Gabe and everything else. So I figured today would be a good time to delve into her character and see whether the shows changes were the right ones. Enjoy.

I think you're missing the point. I saw these flashbacks as Percy recontextualizing all of these "bad" memories of his mom with his new knowledge of being a halfblood. And yes, there is added context for us viewers that Percy wouldn't have known, but I quite liked seeing Sally's struggles. But I'm also a mom, and I relate to a certain extent.
I feel it should have been kept in. One of my favourite things about the books was that I never felt I was being told to dumb down to read the consequent novels and have the same IQ as I did when I read the first book, the writing style grew with me. Sally's arc was vital to her character and was the only time she took focus in the book. By taking out her arc, she will now be the same person in the fifth season that she is here.
Personally, I like the darker tones of the books, especially with Sallys and Percys trauma and percys decent to anger against the gods. Although it's definitely the right choice by Disney to leave out the abuse.💀
Personally, i respectfully disagree. I felt like the change was very much them "disnifying," ie santizing it for their wider Disney Plus audience.
Personally, I've always felt that the abuse Gabe inflicted on Percy and Sally (and the way that impacts their relationship dynamic) continues to affect Percy's characterization and decision making throughout the book canon, especially the older and more cynical he gets.
IMO Percy's fatal flaw of loyalty is largely due to him and his mom become really codependent and protective of each other for to the emotional and physical abuse. The situations that make him angriest in canon are when he sees women that remind him of his mom being abused or neglected by the men that claim to love them.
And when Sally kills Gabe and Percy had the realization that "he was leaving her in capable hands: her own" it's also foreshadowing that Percy is just as willing to go that far when similarly pushed later on. He takes after Sally just as much (if not more than) he takes after Poseidon.
While i like then exploring her character and their relationship more (and giving her more on screen agency), the abusive relationship with Gabe (and the learned helplessness she has at the beginning of the first book bc of him) is a critical part of who she and Percy are and why they make the choices they do.
Additionally, while the storyline is pretty dark for children's media, it's something a lot of kids go through but don't see represented in their media. PJO's greatest strength has always been it's relatability to kids who often aren't represented, starting from the moment Rick decided to give his son a hero with dyslexia and adhd and continuing on as the series grew and Rick grew with it.
There was something so unique about a piece of middle grade fiction that clearly depicted emotional, physical, and financial abuse (without getting overly graphic) in a way that framed it as unequivocally wrong, with the abuser's murder at the hands of his victim being framed as a moment of justice and catharsis rather than as something that makes the victim "just as bad" like so much children's fiction
I wish it was animated.
same, but then my friends wouldn't have watched it
@ I hope they understand that animated shows and movies can be good and they (your friends) can like them as much as their live action counterparts.
@@ThePersephoneDiggen well, we (4 people including me) watched Percy Jackson together. Only one of them hasn't read the books. The one who hasn't read the books doesn't like animated stuff in general and inly watches stuff with real actors. The other 2 who also read the books only like 3d animation and (for some reason) really dislike 2d animation.
I like both 2d and 3d animation and stuff with real actors, but I think 2d is better than 3d, and you can't directly compare animation to real stuff.
I don't get how they can dislike 2d animation
@ I don’t understand that either.
Literally my sentiment toward almost anything 😂
I’m glad we’re back to the iconic thumbnails
i prefer the book sally she was way more kind and accepting
she never got angry and when she did it was never for long
she was this amazing person who had gone through so much, with gabe and also her past with her family
she always shows kindness and in the end she get repaid for all her kindness and gets to go to university, she gets paul and she gets rid of gabe
they kind lose all of that in the show. but i still love show sally ❤
I love pjo gang
👇
Too much depth? Never heard of such a take, now that's interesting 😅Also at 3:00 Difference? Her character was just expanded on, she didn't pick up a new personality
in the books she’s shown as someone who is always kind and never really got angry, just disappointed
in the show she has a bit of a short temper and got frustrated easily
@bee-18-ki Yeah, she never really got angry, but we have to keep in mind the flashbacks she is younger. Also, even though she got angry, she showed a lot of patience with Percy, like in the pool or in the car scene
