I feel beaten up at work but jiu-jitsu is that time for myself. If I can be grinded down during rolls and laugh about it same at work and in life.

The PTSD-part is so underrated. There are so many that self medicate with BJJ.
However since its seldom outspoken, it can also go terrible wrong. The Kodokan as subject for future PTSD research will be interesting to follow.
    Greatful you highlight this.

I think the reason jiu-jitsu can be such a blessing to our mental and spiritual health is that it has these 2 components sorely lacking in our modern world.
    1. Serving others and being in community - teaching each other, helping each other out while striving to make ourselves better in a skill - brotherhood, sisterhood. A sense of community and friendship has increasingly diminished as religion has gone down and we as people have become more atomized. In terms of friendship, Aristotle describes three kinds. Friendships of pleasure, utility, and virtue. The latter is the highest form and I think BJJ sets us up to have the two higher forms of friendships.
"It is not good for man to be alone"
    (Genesis 2:18)
    2. A life of virtue or striving for 'eudaimonia' as Aristotle put it in his ethics and Aquinas re-affirmed. Modern life is largely sedentary, and full of immediate pleasure-seeking traps. Whereas jiu-jitsu gives us a fun way to exercise and do something difficult for the long-term goal of proficiency in the art.
Then Jesus said to his disciples: If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
    (Matthew 16:24)
Thank you for sharing your jiu-jitsu with us.
    God bless.

I love this!! And connect with it so much! Since I’m so new to it, I’m often anxious to go, but I never regret going and I never leave the mat unhappy!
Jiu jitsu is already one of my favorite tools for combating sooo much social anxiety. I have already noticed how much more comfortable I am around others overall! 🙌

The mindfulness book "30 Days to Reduce Depression" by Harper Daniels has good meditation exercises to practice.

Thanks for sharing this. This is the first video I've seen on the subject. I too have struggled with anxiety/depression all my life, and I'm considering BJJ as a healthy outlet, with the intention of eventually getting off my medication. It's just hard because depression sucks the motivation and energy right out of you, and the anxiety makes me paranoid that something terrible is going to happen (e.g., injury). It's a vicious cycle. So, those are the first hurdles I'll need to overcome. Your insights are much appreciated!

Hi. Today I went to try it out at nearby bjj just sitting at a chair watching them practice and I had to step outside after 5 minutes cause my onset of panic attacks started on me. I started sweating and walked outside and couldn’t go back inside. I had it under control the past 5 years and all of a sudden is starting to come back. I’m located in Naples fl.
