    My first lenses were the old kit lens (18-55 mm which came with the Nex-5) and the old silver 18-200 mm. This was a great combo to start with because it covered a huge focal range and offered the choice of a light casual use lens and an all in one lens with long range. As a new photographer this was great because it allowed me to see what focal lengths I tended to use on trips, during indoor events, museums, galleries etc. and they allowed me to understand the settings required for various scenarios as well as the limitations of certain types of lenses and apertures. As time went on I expanded on this base with experience and bought other lenses (all Sony) as and when needed for a specific purpose e.g. the 18-105mm F4 for video, the 15mm f1.4 for low light shots, the 16-55 f2.8 for general use etc. In the meantime also upgraded my cameras from time to time from the NEX-5 to the a6000, then a6300, now a6700. I am a big fan of the "all in one" 18-200 to this day because of its range (especially with clear image zoom) and versatility, especially on trips where carrying this one lens plus the 15mm f1.4 prime lens covers almost every need for my tourist shots. I have many more premium lenses now but the 18-200 still gets a lot of use even after over 10 years. Unless you know right away what type of photos you want to take I think versatility is the best thing to start with.

    Great video. My first lens for my a6000 was a 18135 from Sony. There is nothing particular good about that (tbh it is a very slow lens), but i really like having the ability to zoom far with 135mm focal length.

    As an a6000 user whom started with its kit lens and then got sony 35 f1.8 a couple months after, if i was to go back and be lucky enough and can have first 2 lenses (budgetwise), i would go for tamron 11-20 f2.8 and a good ole sigma 56 f1.4 or sony 35 f1.8. My frustration with my own a6000 is getting the wide angle shot that i would like to have. And yeah the 56mm/35mm lens is just awesome focal length for street portraiture. So yeah, you guys can go on scroll now haha a

    I bought the Sony 50mm f1.8 OSS as my first prime for the a5000 and it was a total failure. Why? Because indoors it's too tight, and for casual shooting of friends and family, it's too tight as well. Like when being in the park or city, you have to stop all walking activity, gain some distance to your subjects and take the pic. Killing the mood and dynamic of the situation in an instant. I fortunately sold it without a loss after half a year and only a dozen pics, and bought the Sony 35mm f1.8 instead. And THAT lens (50mm FF equivalent) really brought me forward. So much fun to use. So many great memorable pictures taken. So this Sony 35mm, or the Sigma 30mm f1.4, I would recommend much, much more as a first prime. Once I became more secure with the 35mm, I added the Sigma 56mm to my collection and learned to handle that. But for a beginner, a 50mm / 56mm might be buzzkill. And we can't afford to loose people in the crop mirrorless market ;)

    My first lens for a6000 was Sigma 16mm. Why? It is because the sharpest lens for a6000 and if technically speaking, it has large aperture so that I can use it for night photography as well and great for landscapes and even for portraits. Portraits taken by 16mm is more like cinematic I think :)

    Awesome video as always! Fantastic material, and far too few people talk about the benefits of purchasing full frame glass for APS-C in world of Sony! Yes you will pay more if you want the fancy lenses, but that lens can outgrow the APS-C and switching to Full Frame will be much less painful. I did experience the pain of switching from Sony APS-C to Lumix Full Frame and it was painful! 😢

    • @TomsJurjaks
      @TomsJurjaks  2 роки тому

      Thanks brother, I totally agree. Half of my lenses are for Full Frame although I only own a6000 and a6400. The 85mm f1.8 FE is the most used one even beating aps-c lenses. I think the problem is that people lack the long term planning and I get it, its really hard to predict where you gonna be down the line, not everyone can be so committed to this costly hobby 😁

    • @ReiDoesIt
      @ReiDoesIt 2 роки тому

      @@TomsJurjaks Very true! When you do the tests between all the 50mm lenses, please take a look how brighter is the full frame lenses. The f-stop as we know on lens is calculated by dividing the focal length with entrance pupil diameter. Full frame lenses are made with larger sensor in mind and therefore they need a larger entrance pupil diameter. While this does not help with DoF or FoV, it does help with the low light performance. And another benefit is that there are little if any vignetting with Full Frame lenses on APS-C. Can't wait for the 50mm shootout!

    • @TomsJurjaks

    Spent the first few weeks using the 16-50mm kit lens with my new Sony and this was super helpful for where to go next. I want to shoot some action shots / mostly athletics and running but I don't think I'll need a large tele since I am able to get fairly close to my subject unlike shooting from the sidelines with football, basketball, etc. -- Would the 85mm f/1.8 that you shoot with a lot be a good option? I really enjoyed the shots of cyclists and people walking that you got with it! Cheers

    • @TomsJurjaks
      @TomsJurjaks  2 роки тому +1

      Hey James, yeah the 85mm on APSC is quite nice, gives about 130mm focal length. You could use the prime, but what if you are too close? Can you move back?
      Alternatively you could go with a fast zoom lens? 70-200mm f2.8 maybe?

  • @IvarsDayLab

    My first lens for my a6400 (after the kit lens) is Sigma 30mm f1.4 Why? Because I could get it almost unused for half of the price and 30mm is perfect for pretty much everything (street photography, videos, landscape, ...). My second is Sigma 16mm f1.4 and that one I bough used but found a really great deal so I was happy. 16mm is perfect for videos, perfect to warp the retrospective and for street photography/architecture this lens is a beast + it's ultra sharp.
    My next buy will be Sigma 56mm f1.4 because its awesome for portraits and Sony FE 50mm f1.8 because on apsc it give you pretty much 85mm feel, so you can get a closer shots of people on streets and be on safe distance from them. I consider Sony FE 85mm f1.8 to have 100mm look and feel, but I need to consider this one as it is 500+EUR investment.

      When it comes to 85mm - I can't recommend it enough. It is the lens that has taken the most pictures from all the lenses I have. I was so surprised on how much I use it from portraits to landscapes and product photos. Try to find a good deal on it (either used or Sony's Cashback) and let me tell you - you won't regret it. Any reason you chose 50mm FE over the 50mm OSS? Thanks!

    • @TomsJurjaks
      @TomsJurjaks  2 роки тому +1

      Few reasons, mainly because its dirt cheap and can fit both the APS-C and Full Frame cameras. But if I was to stick only with APS-C for ever, I would choose Sigma 56mm f1.4 over Sony 50mm OSS. The only reason why it would be a good choice if you do a lot of videos - then the OSS is a really nice thing to have.

    Which lens would you undoubtedly recommend for street/urban photography?

    • @TomsJurjaks
      @TomsJurjaks  2 роки тому

      Sigma 56mm f1.4 for APS-C cameras but Sony 85mm f1.8 for full frame. Its is quite zoomed in, but thats what I like the most. I believe most people would go with something much wider like 24 or 35mm.

    I bought the A6700 with a 18-135mm power zoom lens from origin. Should I keep that one or sell and buy one of these you recommended? (I am still learning photography)

    • @TomsJurjaks
      @TomsJurjaks  3 місяці тому +1

      I think its a perfect combo for you if you are still learning. Get used to your camera, the settings, the style of your photography and only then think of ADDITIONAL lens. For example a prime lens.

      Yeah 100%! I had the same combo and really love it. Remember that its more about the skills than the gear so make sure you learn a lot and you will be able to capture stunning photos with the gear you have.

    There is another 50mm that I would like to hear your opinion about - the Sony 50mm f2.5g

    • @TomsJurjaks
      @TomsJurjaks  2 роки тому +1

      I was not aware of this lens. I think I disregarded it because of the f2.5. I think its too poor for a prime lens since nowadays for a little bit more you can get a zoom lens with f2.8. I would much rather pic a zoom lens then.

      @@TomsJurjaks you have a point there. I own this lens and what I love about it is it’s incredibly sharp images and fast auto-focus. And last but not least - the form factor, it’s small, light and beautifully designed. I didn’t mind paying the $800 for it. My only gripe is that’s it’s f2.5. 🤨. I would have been more than happy to pay $200 more if they had made it a f1.8.

      And last but not least, I think maybe Samyang could be something you are interested in? I think they even have 50mm f1.4. affordable but not as small as Sony G
