one of best documentaries ive seen, its so realistic, love mansky unique style, he gives viewer chance to make his own opinion about topic, he leaves silent places in videos to think about it. Intro is also amazing, Mansky showing his family reaction of yeltsin resignation and shock on everyone, he is not even shy to show intimate parts of his family, wife and daughters. Documentary also shows realism when putin was given power by yeltsin (how much yeltsin daughter was involved and was one of orchestrators of putin ascent, also putin inner circle in early days) , only after seeing it and knowing whats happening now in ukraine and russia you can feel such a strange feeling while watching beginning of the end in late 90s and early 00s

This feels so chilling now that we know where all of this was heading to. The horror-esque atmosphere doesn't feel aggravated anymore. Just the transition between Putin and Gorbachev on 0:41 says so much. Relevancy jumped 50 points.

NATO parked itself in Ukraine and began building the military on Russia’s doorstep... what do you think would happen if Russia would begin building up the military in Mexico? How long before US would carpet bomb them? This is existential threat to Russia. Ukraine and Russia had an agreement in 1991 that Ukraine would remain neutral.

I remember this documentary being released on youtube with english subtitles on DW in December 2022. Strangely it isn't there anymore. Was a good film.

Good luck. I watched this about a year ago. It was extremely enlightening and riveting. I thought I'd revisit it with recent events, but I can't find it online anywhere! Not even any of the pay or subscription sites. You see the link for it, the preview, but movie is no longer avail. It was a very unfiltered, no spin look at the corruption. It made Putin look really bad. Only think I can thing I can think of, they had it removed for internet.

This is close, and it's good. But no where near as informative or damning as Putin's Witness. At the time of the filming it was Boris Yeltsin who held the power. Putin was a newcomer, unable to control the situation. You could tell Putin wasn't comfortable with the camera being in the room but he didn't have the authority to stop it. The inside access film maker had to Boris Yeltsin, his home and family, Putin's campaign, I don't think anyone realized, at the time, what they were filming and what it would later mean.

Russians are weird. There's a scene in the hbo miniseries Generation Kill, where local Iraqis are starting to get restless with the Marines. The local magistrate tells the Marine commander to instruct his troops to "Just push them around. If they get too close, kick them back. They're used to it." Some peoples are just used to being manhandled by authoritarians. I guess it's up to each country's populace to figure out just which way they crave that boot to the chest. And what then, to do about it.
