    I really don’t get why some people are complaining about how long this movie is while they keep binge watching a lot of shows on netflix or amazon prime. It’s not like y’all are busy or something...

    • @jasonmarcel4823
      @jasonmarcel4823 4 роки тому +60

      I suspect it isn't the length they're complaining about so much as they want stupid stuff to happen every two seconds like in the dumb shows they binge, which hammer you over the head with plot points instead of allowing a story to breathe the way this one does.

    This is my favorite movie. Every time I think about it, which is often, I simply get this feeling of heartbreak deep inside my soul. Hu Bo created a piece of art that will likely be with us forever and will be considered an epic classic in film history.
    He will never get to see the film's critical and international acclaim. He created a piece of art that is forever sewn into the souls of its viewers, and he will never get to see how much we loved it, how much we love HIM.
    May he rest in peace.

    I finally got the opportunity to watch this today through the Criterion Channel. I'm happy that it's available there, if only for a while - this was one of the most affecting movies that I've ever seen. I'm working through how it made me feel, but thanks to the incredible characterization and tone-setting through the movie the ending managed to be one of the most strikingly beautiful and happy experiences I've ever had, in films or out of them. Thank you, Hu Bo, wherever you are. Your work will live on.

      Spoilers ahead.
      The ending is just stunning.
      The whole movie is bleak, dark, cold, dreary, and then we get to the ending, and that one long shot of everyone simply playing shuttlecock on the road was one of the warmest moments in recent memory... And the you hear the elephant. Stunning in every sense of the word.
      I'm tearing up just writing about it.

      Toward the film’s end, one of the characters talks about the dangers of hope. Every city will be as horrible as this one, he warns. This realization contains hope’s origins. It’s only after freedom from the delusion of getting to a better or higher plane, he explains, that one finally learns to live in reality.

    Io sono della scuola neo-romantica, o forse neo-romanica. A seconda del mio livello di sovranismo. A volte non mi capacito. Da qui An Elephant Sitting Still, il tipo di film che se vuoi abbordare (ma come parlo?) spacchi di brutto. Davvero. Ci ho pensato un po' oggi. Il film di Hu Bo mi ha un pochetto ricordato il saggio Anelli nell'io di Douglas Hofstadter che, per fare le persone semplici, è il tentativo dell'autore di rigettare in forma filosofica-quantistica l'elaborazione del lutto della sua amata moglie. Anche se poi i più ti diranno che quel libro parla di altro. Io invece ho sempre visto quel libro come l'elaborazione di una perdita. Perché dico ciò? Perché An Elephant Sitting Still è un film che abbraccia calorosamente la rassegnazione. Cioè? Da parte mia vivo l'esistere come una perenne condanna. Invidio molto chi riesce a trovare la giusta soluzione a questo aspetto della contingenza. Per quanto mi riguarda non vi sono motivi che mi tengano in vita. Anzi. Detesto profondamente ogni suggerimento a pensare il contrario. Sono della opinione che non vi sia nulla, da quando nasci, che possa portarti a credere che ne valga la pena. Per me non vi è nulla per cui valga la pena vivere "avanti lettera". Personalmente non ho mai trovato elementi che mi abbiano portato a pensare il contrario. Vivere per me fa ribrezzo ed è una pena. Il cupio dissolvi è la questione più ragionevole. Ma lo si accetta. Il vivere. Alcuni proseguono il danno con la terribile convinzione che fare figli sia il top. Poveri stronzi. Un aggiungere squallore alla pena (egoista pergiunta) del nostro quotidiano. Per me la vita umana non è affatto così sacra. Trovo questa idea una stronzata pari al livello di merda che si produceva nella antica Roma. Le stime parlano di circa 500 tonnellate di merda al giorno. Su per giù. Un nuovo luogo equivale a nuove sofferenze. Ed è una agonia che ci accompagna da subito. Dalla nascita. Anche per questo detesto ogni forma di affettività legata al tempo come costruzione. Dal mio punto di vista ogni cosa che facciamo soggiace all'entropia. Entropia e contingenza sono i tristissimi motori che ci governano. An Elephant Sitting Still è un film che parla esattamente di questo. Piani sequenza, scelte sbagliate, errori stupidi, cazzate. Il ventenne regista cinese Hu Bo in lunghissime e difficili quattro ore prova a ficcarci in testa questo. Ed io condivido la sua logica. Condivido ogni singolo fotogramma. Poco importa che il regista stesso si sia suicidato a film compiuto. O forse è proprio la predisposizione a questo lucidissimo film.

    This movie was great, a masterpiece, but the idea behind it was very wrong for some people, all the event of this movie took place in one day, they only showed the bad thing happened which is accurate and part of life, but the whole life is not bad, neither all people, this movie may give suicidal thoughts for some people who suffer from depression, the director itself had a problem, he only saw the dark side of the world, life had a bright and dark side, I'm glad about the ending of this movie.
    Just be careful and don't recommend this movie for people who are weak and depressed.
    Suicide is a selfish thing, people who comment suicide they don't care about their family, they think they are the only person who suffers from bad days, most of them are spoiled teenagers who can't handle to live in reality and take responsibility and tey try to run away (I loved the ending when the old guy lectured them on how every city will be the same till they learn how to accept the reality) they are the most selfish people on earth. they think their family doesn't give a shit about them but they do, they don't listen and they try to escape from responsibility and leave their family on a long journey of depression because of their selfish act, look at all families and friends life who lost close people to them due to suicide, they can't move on in life because of them.

    • @alanyee4996
      @alanyee4996 2 роки тому +7

      This is just your opinion. Contrary to your interpretation of the movie, the character in the movie does try to accept the reality, but reality keep failing them, things doesn't goes to the good way. They are not selfish, they just try to keep going, find way to deal with it, but bad things keep happen, worse are yet to come? This is the feeling of the movie. It is an unlucky bad day for all the 4 or 5 characters that happen in one day. It is a very Chinese thing and is very personal to the director who is grown up in China. It become part of the growing culture here, people keep blaming, the lower class keep struggle, nothing can be done, because of the society. The reality is cruel, nobody give a helping hand. The ending seems an intended open end for audience to think about.The elephant in the movie is symbolized like a god like thing, an escape for the character. Does they really meet the elephant in the end? I think probably not. I think they all back to the question about their bad life, but become more grown up and matured.
      This movie definitely is not for kid, it is not a family movie. It is about documentary, about reality, about humanity. It is definitely for adult only, for matured audience.
      Master piece or not, that is subjective. I would say this is a very personal movie about the life of the director. It depict the struggle of the director, the weaker and poorer class.
