- "Over the Rainbow" was recorded during the sessions for James Taylor's 2020 album, "American Standard," but the song never made it onto the album. This is a previously unreleased, moving interpretation of The Wizard of Oz classic, "Over The Rainbow," written by Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg.

"I’m so glad these three songs are getting a general release. We cut more songs than would fit on the album, American Standard, which made the promotional department happy. They find uses for the extra tracks, usually as 'exclusive' material for the big box retailers. But I’ve regretted not giving these three pieces the exposure I think they deserve.
My solo guitar version of 'Over the Rainbow' has two points worth mentioning: first it keeps Yip Harburg's original introductory verse, which is rare, though the song is forever popular. And second: its arrangement has more variations than any other “Rainbow” I’ve heard - it’s one chordy chart."

He's been good forever, but he has the greatest mature man's voice.
I like that he did the entire song. So many people don't.
Well, this is just pure beauty. James' velvet voice and those stunning chord transitions, full of 7ths, 9ths and God only knows what else, bring a lump to my throat.
Gosh, James Taylor is just so magical. He just can't put out something bad, can he?

Mr. Taylor, your voice and guitar are an inspiration to generations. At 55 I picked up a guitar for the first time in hopes of being able to move my family the way your music moves me. Thank you for the music of my life.
Not only one of the greatest singers, greatest songwriters, and greatest performers....but, a super nice, polite guy. Met him twice. He's a real American treasure. Hope I get to see him again soon. Such a good dude.

Still there , over the rainbow , this is why we still are his biggest fans , from the day I first heard his "Fire and Rain" ,walking down a main Nairobi street, in 1970.
I heard James' brother, Livingston, play 'Rainbow' maybe 40-45 years ago. He did a great rendition as well.

Same here. No family here near me. My mother died in February, and my dad several years ago. Then, my girlfriend of 4 years split up with me before Thanksgiving. Lonely times are here temporarily.... This has been one very hard year....

Getting goosebumps - from the song, and from a 'synchronicity': I'd just speaking with my wife about Oscar Peterson. How we saw him at Winnipeg's 'Centennial Concert Hall' -- an audience of more than a thousand of us -- back in 1984. To this day "the best concert we have ever seen." Oscar without his famous trio, 'alone together' with jazz guitar giant Joe Pass. I recalled to my wife how Oscar could improvise a solo so that "every note's a chord."
My wife asked me if Oscar had recorded 'Over The Rainbow'” -- after I had mentioned that it had been voted No 1 on list of 500 popular songs, in a couple of late 20th century surveys.
So. James Taylor's Facebook page just shared this tonight: OVER THE RAINBOW with a take-your-breath-away solo guitar arrangement that is stunningly beautiful - and with every note a chord! New progressions that flow with an organic wholeness only James Taylor could impart. Deepest thanks for sharing it with us now (and not holding back for inclusion on 'American Standard II' - 2022)

James, from sweet baby James I sang to my son a baby James as a lullably in 1978. Then to Country Road and You Got a Friend. Fire and Rain went onto the story of my life. Timeless.

I agree!! Oh my word, it's so appropriate right now. Someone wasn't thinking! (producers). For the past few months, I have this on in my car (going nowhere) and have shared it with my sisters, friends, "heaven opens a magic lane" "a place behind the sun". It may be old, but It's very relevant and his voice, well...I have an unrequited love for him. LOL I always feel like he is smiling when he sings. It touches my heart.

I am a great fan of James since the 70's and also musician. I play some songs since then like 'You've got a friend, Close your eyes, Shower the people, Long ago far away, The secret of life' but this guitar arrangement is so beautiful with his pure voice(working on it) Unbelievable this did not make it to the album. Happy that it's on You Tube!

Such a beautiful song James! Your music is so calming and I am so glad so many of the younger generation still love to listen to you, my son being one of them. In the late 70's, early 80's I played your music to calm the house down. It was not only soothing for my children (get them to sleep faster) but also when my friends would see me grab a James album they realized it was time for them to leave except the two that stayed to play cards. Thank you for so many years of great music. Happy New Year to you and your family.
