      If it makes you feel any better a lot more people pooped this way than in a toilet for all human history. Most of those people couldn’t read or write and had no concept of micro organisms.

    I've been backpacking since the early 1960s and I have to say that one thing I've noticed over the last decade or so is that more and more backpackers have absolutely no sense of proper backcountry sanitation & hygiene. Every year it seems to get worse. I find a disturbing number of improperly covered or buried poop piles, often in the middle of trails or near water sources and establish campsites. I've also seen significantly more toilet paper scattered around the wilderness--especially on popular trails (parts of the PCT, for instance, have become a nightmare for this very reason). Nothing is more discouraging than hiking into some gorgeous wilderness only to see streamers of TP everywhere left behind (pun intended) by lazy and incompetent hikers. For gawd's sakes, people learn to poo properly in the woods! It ain't hard to do. Thanks for this video. I just hope more people watch and practice your advice!

      Do not do this! A stick poking out of the ground is dangerous and could impale someone or their dog. Plus, someone might grab it to use for firewood and have your poo on it xD The odds of someone digging the same spot are extremely, extremely low - especially if you bury it correctly and the area receives rain, decomposition occurs very quickly.

    I just want to say thank you for going into detail on how to squat. It's so darn easy, yet pants position is not intuitive and many, even experienced people haven't got that figured out. And, cleaning up with water and your fingers is also very easy, very LNT, and significantly reduces those rashy irritation issues back there that many people struggle with.

    I'm not sure if this is viewed or monitored since it is two years old, but something to address for older and larger hikers is the squatting position. It is not easy to balance in that position. In fact, it can be painful and very easy to fall over backward. Some hikers use a wedge under their heels to prop themselves up and help balance. Others carry a small folding chair with the center cut out.
    I'd like to hear from other older larger hikers what methods they use to comfortably eliminate in the woods.

    • @BackpackingTV
      @BackpackingTV  3 роки тому +2

      This depends upon location of where you're going. If you're backpacking in seldom visited areas with moisture in the soil, that paper will be gone very quickly. I do pack out my TP if its a high traffic area or a place with poor soil microbes to break it down.

    Love the series. A few questions. 1) What if you can hold a squat well? 2) What if you miss the hole? 3) Can I also bury dog poop?

    • @BackpackingTV
      @BackpackingTV  3 роки тому +9

      Hi! Great questions. 1: Buy squating all the way down, you're resting your thighs on your calves and you don't have to use your muscles to hold yourself up, so you can hold that position comfortably for a while. 2: If you miss the hole, use a stick, pretend you're a golfer, and putt it in. 3: You can bury dog poop. But this question really matters for where you are. If you are in the wilderness, you can let your dog poo as it pleases as long as it's off the trail and not at overlooks or campsites, ie places people will want to be and enjoy. Otherwise it can decompose on it's own. The difference between dog poo and human poo is our diet. Because we eat so much processed foods it's not good to leave out and about.

    Great video, I think a lot of people have no clue and perhaps avoids either go hiking or doing number two.. the first is sad, the second isn’t healthy. But I would like to add one or two things. Use none bleach (I think thats what you call it) toilet paper. It’s not good for the environment and doesn’t decompose as good. At least in Sweden many people burn the paper in the hole before covering it. And last if you feel insecure about the squatting position you can use a stick or something similar to hold in front of you (vertically that is.. not horizontal lol) to make it easier, specially if you have poor balance or bad knees. :)

    • @BackpackingTV
      @BackpackingTV  2 роки тому +2

I heard you should use tree leafs - which might be okay, maybe? but if your stools are not anywhere near firm and very loose - that's gonna smear like red clay. Ewww! Hahaha. So anyways yeah - a short video explaining something like this is welcome - I mean., it may not necessarily be a life/death survival situation - maybe someone forgets to bring the toity paper with them, or the hiking trip was just a day longer than anticipated and ya run out of paper.

    If there is a popular location or you are with a bigger group, you can also dig a poo trench. Initially, dig a hole like instructed here, then cover the poo by extending the initial hole. Poo by poo, work your way ahead in linear fashion. Doesn't take that much space, although it does concentrate the fertilizer more locally.

    • @BackpackingTV
      @BackpackingTV  2 роки тому +1

      This is a good option for bigger groups or if you intend to stay in a camp area for an extended stay. Although I usually suggest digging a big trench once before anyone has used it. I'd rather not dig that close to a partially filled latrine, personally.

      @BackpackingTV  4 роки тому +5

      Hi Tallie! Mountain lion attacks are so rare that I don't concern myself with them. Especially for adults. Mountain lions generally don't want anything to do with humans. If you are in an area with a heavy mountain lion presence, I'd recommend camping or hiking with another person and don't let small children or pets be alone for long. Mountain lions usually know where humans are and stay far away.

    Just one thing, how can anyone be sure that there is no one walking on you when you are actually doing the deed? Nothing can be more awkward than this, I guess that is the risk that we take :)

    What do you do if you can squat down like that?

    • @BackpackingTV
      @BackpackingTV  3 роки тому +1

      While this position is surprisingly comfortable for many people, it may not be for everyone. If that's physically too challenging, I'd look for a place where you can dig a hole at the base of a rock or log that you can perch the edge of your butt on, allowing you to rest and go in the hole.

    Some older people are not flexibile enough to get into that squatting position.....need something to stabilize themselves so they do not fall over. Maybe holding onto tree branches or sitting partially on a log?

    Never poop on a steep hill without digging. Also, make sure it's not surrounded by bovine over the crest of said hill. :-O
