    All aboard: the latest LEGO Ideas set rolling into the station is 21344 Orient Express, based on a design by French filmmaker Thomas Lajon.
    Initially approved for production in October 2022, the 2,540-piece set will be the 52nd model under the LEGO Ideas banner, and offers a train radically changed from Thomas’s original submission. The LEGO Group has altered the scale, colour scheme and even the number of carriages in 21344 Orient Express while bringing it to shelves, seemingly all in an effort to make it compatible with standard LEGO track.
    In the process, 21344 Orient Express avoids two perceived missteps by last year’s 76405 Hogwarts Express Collectors’ Edition. Critics called out the LEGO Harry Potter train’s size - it’s too big to sit on regular track - and single carriage upon release, but this dark blue and gold train rectifies both of those issues. And it does so while bringing to life one of the most iconic and luxurious forms of travel ever to cross European borders.

    I would have preferred a longer locomotive like the original submission. If they made EN work 14 years ago, surely they can do that now. But overall, I still like it cause of the lovely carriages. Disappointing that it is harder to motorize but simple enough for train fans to just use two motors. One in the tender and one in loco or add a small motorized carriage to push it.

I wonder if after market lego compatible motors exist? ones with more torque and power to pull this heavy guy.

    I love it. Not even mad about the difficulty to motorize because it's so beautiful I'm content to just add a side platform to the station and let it be eye candy.

    Absolutr rubbish. The coaches are great but the locomotive looks like a disneyland toy train. Everything is out of proportion, particularly the connecting rods. So far removed from the original design it should never have been made under the ideas theme. Very easy pass for me. A real shame as I loved the original submission and feel very let down by lego.

      The Orient Express is the passenger cars which are consistent and unchanging, not whatever loco they have pulling it on any given day. If the designers was dead-set on having a loco as his ideas submission, he should have gone with that instead of a branded luxury train.
      That said, the loco is dumbed down too much and does look out of context and more like a rail yard workhorse than a mainline steamer.

    Actually there might be another way to get that train motorized. but it will be a little bit more expensive but I think it would be more worth it.
    you simply have to add an extra car that is motorized to the train. and in order to hide all the electronics inside you can use a baggage car. That way the train is motorized but it doesn't attract from the overall set.

    • @kentslocum
      @kentslocum 8 місяців тому +5

      Since the train is so heavy, it might be necessary to do both. Motorize the engine/tender and motorize an extra baggage car as a form of distributed power/pusher car.

And then an observation car for the tail end of the train. The two 9v train motors will move the longer train assuming there isn't two much friction on the locomotive wheels.

It could’ve done with more detail (like the original submission) but appreciate this is now a slightly different scale. Also, would’ve been great to be able to easily motorise, but again, understand challenges around this.

    • @steventhetford1755
      @steventhetford1755 7 місяців тому

      Not really. The Ideas set was for the Orient Express. The Orient Express has always been only the carriages, that is what they were known for, that was literal name of the company - the locomotives were contracted from the various state railways of Europe. It makes sense that Lego would focus on the actual Orient Express at the expense of the locomotive in that regard. It makes it feel like the name was only included to get votes for the locomotive. It gets very complicated since the Orient Express is a copyrighted entity.
      It would be like if someone submitted an idea for a set based on King Kong, and named it as such, but most of the effort went to the Empire State Building, with Kong just being an accessory, and Lego turning around and making a set more focussed on Kong and only including the spire of the Empire State Building, especially as a requirement from Universal. Or Disney. Or whoever owns the rights this week. That is a dumb example I know, but it is best I could think of to describe the Orient Express' unique case.

    I politely do not agree when you say that all these changes elevate the original model … IMHO the Idea supporters voted to get the engine - which was a masterpiece - not the cars. • @steventhetford1755
      @steventhetford1755 7 місяців тому

      I think that misses the point of the Orient Express entirely. It was founded by the Compagnie Internationale des Wagon-Lits (the International Sleeper Car Company), who never once owned or operated any locomotives - they contracted that out to the various state railways. The Carriages ARE the Orient Express, so to have it take a backseat to a locomotive doesn't make any sense - it sort of makes it feel like the only reason that it was made to be the Orient Express was to get name recognition and support on the Ideas website.

      @@steventhetford1755 I totally get your point. The Orient Express are in fact the sleeping/dining carriages, you are 100% right.
