FunFact- When BM first started, they actually had to buy the tickets themselves and send it to friends and acquaintances to come attend their concerts. 7 years later, they’re now set to play at Budokan on Feb/2021, one of the most prestigious venues for artists in Japan.
Here’s a (Must Read) recent 2019 official interview where every member talks in detail about themselves- their family and upbringing, what got them into music, influences, past associations and various struggles eventually leading to BM’s formation. This is handsdown the best and most comprehensive interview/bio of them so far. They are often quite reserved and awkward in their interviews even in the Japanese ones and the language barrier only adds to it, but the interviewer here seems to have nailed it.
Just reading it makes it obvious that the vibe there must’ve been great and everyone seemed very comfortable and frank in their conversation.
I came across this by chance just recently and have been trying to share this everywhere as its too good to be missed.

Band-Maid is truly a special band. Kanami is a genius composer. Like you said the structure is so unique. The transitions and changes are never the same. They always do something to make them different. No cookie cutter in this band. What an appropriate song for them as their goal is world domination. I believe in them.

Onset, an instrumental. Puzzle, a great song, packed with guitar riffs, great Kanami solo. Tbe Dragon cries, sung in english. Take me higher, Kanami shreds a wah peddle. Turn me on, incredible song, great Kanami solo. Moratorium, great crowd reaction, riffs. All great songs, Kanami shines in all these. Love Band Maid, funny Domination, Freedom, Dice, Play are all great songs, but Band Maid has even much greater songs.
Band Maid and Nightwish are my favorite bands.
These girls are the "Queens of Slides", as you'll find the more you listen. From a Kanami power slide in "Blooming" to her subtle slides in "Freedom" LIVE, to the bass slides in the music video "Daydreaming", which is a WONDERFUL song, you'll love the bass line in this one. Also some nice bass slide work in "Bubble". Personally I listen to the music video songs before I go to the LIVE music, the music is cleaner and you can pick out things the live versions sometimes hides/misses .....but you can't beat the energy of their live performances.
The magic with BM is that they make you smile. They've been very good to me during 2020 for that reason.
Yup, there are not that many bands, who can do that. Maybe Lynyrd Skynyrd... -So powerful and exiting, since they have created so many interesting songs. Disco, dance music, electro, techno, house, EDM etc. and many traditional rock songs, even heavy metal have the same drum beat from start to the end. They really did save horrible year 2020 for me. Kinda glad I didn't notice them earlier, I had seen only Thrill earlier.
The whole "solo segment" isn´t on the original song, normally it´s just a short Kanami solo that you hear in the end of this whole "everyone gets a solo" section. So they are better live FOR SURE, always other stuff they add to the songs... Intros, outros, solo sections etc., they are really creative and working hard to get the fans something to look forward too and to fall in love with!
IMO the best and most hardworking band on the planet at the moment!
Perfect example: the new intro to "Alone" in the online concert a few days ago literally made jaws drop around the globe.

For years, Dream Theater were my favorite band. I really dig high levels of musicianship. Their music often frustrated me, though, because it just wasn't... fun? I mean, I love it, and still listen to it, but something is lacking (with a few song exceptions). Band Maid OFTEN throw in proggy elements and their musicianship is ridiculous, but they also are able to consistently inspire my mood. I catch myself smiling at nothing when I'm listening to them, I always feel better. They are my anti-depressant of choice. That's reinforced in their live videos, because they look happy and like they love what they do. During breaks in concerts, there's always goofing around with each other, or silly skits for the audience. They make fun of themselves. They're just wholesome AF.

Best rock band on the planet. I love the message of this song and the parts where it encourages the listener to "Announce your arrival" and "Take over the world". I for one accept my new little pigeon overlord.

The lead guitarist Kanami uses PRS guitars and powered my a MESA Boogie triple diode AMP. Yes they are great musicians and also they are easy on the eyes. And the drummer has a big fan named Jimmy Page. He said the drummer is his drummer Jon Bonham re-incarnated.

Great run down of a great song! You're at the stage many of us were after a few plays of Band-Maid -- intrigued, sucked in, a little disoriented, and definitely impressed. After a few more songs, you'll start to realize that Kanami -- the main song composer and lead guitarist -- is basically a genius, and all the others are masters at their own craft and add immeasurably to the music. I've been shedding crappy reactors from my subs lately, but going to get you on board for sure. Thanks, Jim!
Simply put, the best live rock band on the planet at this point in time.
Band-Maid is incredible, I discovered them myself a couple months ago wondering what rock I have been under to not have heard of them before now and I can speak japanese. They also play under the name Band Maiko, which was originally them doing an april fools joke and redid one of their songs, Secret My Lips as Secret Maiko Lips. Fun fact, now they write most of their own music. The lead guitarist, Kanami if you need her name, added in traditional japanese instruments to the song and the Lyrics are written by Miku(the band lead, backup vocals and guitar), she rewrote the lyrics in the Kyoto dialect and then they did this video. It was so popular they ended up doing a mini album and 6 more songs. Incidentally, they all can play Piano and various other instruments. ua-cam.com/video/NNHGABwme50/v-deo.html
Just to see something different from them, I'd recommend their ballad Daydreaming MV. My fave of their "slow" songs. Shades of U2 in it I think. Saiki is pretty expressive in it. They have a few songs I think where she can do that.

What makes this performance even more amazing is that it is the 22nd song played in a 23 song set list, if I remember correctly.

The average BAND-MAID concert is 2 Hours long. They have so much music that really only the hits get played. But you can go in any direction from here. Pick one. But if you want a suggestion, follow up with the other big song from the Shibuya Valentine's Day show 'Freedom'. But if you want to stick to Music Videos either do something like 'Rinne" or maybe 'Blooming' or do a BAND-MAIKO song.

Hey man, its not on their official page, but there is a Live Accoustic version of puzzle (search puzzle accoustic) up on you tube. It really showcases Saiki's vocal ability. On their official page, Wonderland also showcases her vocals.

Now I would like to see you reacting to Band Maiko, let me tell you about... 2 years ago, Band Maid announced their end and a new beginning with another purpose, changed their names, costumes, another language (Kioto instead Japanese) and the new band was called Band Maiko. They released a new single called Secret Maiko lips, after they said that was an April's fools!!! But everyone liked and they released a mini album with a new music called Gion Cho. Now, Band Maiko is declared enemies from Band Maid.

lol "Let's go" is for Different ;) the impressive thing about them is they are EVEN BETTER LIVE! Saiki has more emoting in the LIVE versions(besides the awesome musical adds vs the music video). for this song though, if you really want to hear MISA's bass try the music video, because MisaMisaMisa~! :D all the parts after Misa-Kanami solos(Miku vs Kanami,+Akane solo) were all added for the LIVE version only. FAN APPRECIATION/SERVICE by the ladies :) in a recent interview with Young Guitar Magazine(w/Miku & Kanami) Kanami said her new goal is to become a Riff making machine/factory ;) Kanami is sooo good at divying up the focus points throughout the songs. technically there's more. you're only thinking of official music videos(there are also audio only songs too)
the problem with lyrics on screen is they take away your attention from the singer/musicians. usually recommend a 2nd run with lyrics on.

New subscriber here! Now that you've gotten Band-Maid, Baby Metal, Lovebites and X Japan out of the way, time to move on to more Japanese metal and rock. Here are a few suggestions:
Maximum the Hormone - Yoshu Fukushu
Unlucky Morpheus - Knight of the Sword
Doll$Boxx - Shout Down
Undead Corporation - Blow
Band-Maid drummer Akane was inspired to learn to play drums after seeing the Maximum the Hormone drummer.
Both Unlucky Morpheus and Doll$Boxx are fronted by the same singer but the two bands have different sounds. UM being melodic speed metal and Doll$Boxx being more of hard rock/funk.
The guitarist for Undead Corporation is also a guitarist for Unlucky Morpheus. Also the drummer for Unlucky Morpheus is a past member of Undead Corporation (and Galneryus). He is featured in the video for Blow.

Bottom line. (as a generalization), They are not a bunch of over weight, middle aged men or too skinny drug filled losers. They are these little 100 pound ladies who put out some really impressive, heavy rock sounds as good, if not better, than most bands. They are awesomely powerful which makes for an unbelievable counterpoint to their stature. They write their songs and do their own arrangements. THEY ARE BAND-MAID.

"Amazing" is an over-used word these days but they are just that.
