  • The prettier route to Trapper peak goes by Baker Lake. This video should help you to navigate that route better than we did!
In this episode we take you over the infamous Skalkaho Pass in Montana's Sapphire Mountains into the Bitterroot Valley. We start our trip up to Trapper Peak. We decided to split this one up in case some were just interested in Baker Lake itself, but if you want to fallow this trail all the way up to Trapper Peak, you will have to check out the next video. That's were all the hard stuff happens.
The hike to Baker lake kind of tricks you at first with a pretty darn steep stretch to start, but then it backs off and most of the trail is relatively easy.
When you get up to the lake you find that it is not as easily accessed as many Montana lakes are. The valley is so narrow and the vegetation so dense that you are forced to puddle jump from root to root in order to pick your way along the eastern shoreline (which is what you get to first).
We found that Baker lake wasn't exactly a secret in the area as there were a good number of campers there for such a small and relatively remote lake.
Trapper Peak looms large behind the lake making for some great photo opportunities. If you continue up the trail past Baker Lake there is another cool lake, even prettier if you ask me, called Middle lake. I believe the lake past that is Gem Lake, but that one proved to be too much of a detour for us.
We hope you enjoy this episode of Adventures of Shane and Laura. This one was truely a joy to put together. Of all of our hiking adventures around Montana, this one probably has some of the most beautiful and epic scenery.

Thanks Chris! Yeah, I saw you were on Instagram, but didn’t realize you had a UA-cam channel until the 10k subscriber IG post.

Great vid with incredible scenery! Will definitely put it on my list.
    Awesome editing, too!
Scariest road i ever driven? Me and my friends decided to hike up to unknown falls which was near Yosemite. To get to the trailhead, we had to drive unpaved rd and un marked rd for about 3 miles. We ended up turn the car around and came back out because there were two bear cubs and a mama bear blocking our way.
Got so scared because how the mama bear cud become ferocious when she is with her cubs.
Anyways keep it coming! I really enjoy you guys adventure!

Was this really April 2019? We live where we can see Trapper Peak and have watched the big snow caps this year that have only substantially receded the last three weeks, it s now June 22, 2019. Or, is that because we are looking at the North East side, and you approached from the South West?

I think what you are seeing is the date that we posted the video. The hike was actually July of last year.

This was tons of fun. So many roads that are scary for so many different reason. My favorite scary road in the U.S. is the million dollar highway from Red Mountain Pass into Ouray Colorado. Thank you for taking us along with you!

What an adventure. How long of a hike was that?

We think that including our big detour, the whole hike was about 11 miles with a pretty big elevation gain. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment!

Adventures of Shane and Laura I think 11 miles would take me a week! Looking forward to part 2

Skalkaho pass in December? Definitely not... unless you were on a snowmobile. ;) Maybe a fun video for next winter though, what do you guys think? :)
