How to spin more consistant yarn?
How to spin for a specific weight yarn (DK, Worsted, etc..)?
How much fiber to buy to spin for a sweater? (HINT: grist)
We chat about what wheel I'm spinning on and then answer some questions you've asked. Including how understanding grist will help you understand how much fiber you will need for any project.

This was an absolutely fabulous video! I am a brand new spinner. So far I've spun 4oz. of gray Romney, and almost finished 4oz. of white Romney. Plying for the very first time is in my near future. I am trying to master a short forward draw. I'm spinning just to create yarn for the first time. Everything you spoke about addresses so many of my unasked questions. Especially about how to spin a consistent yarn, and how to spin for a specific weight of yarn. Your grist explanation is so clear, particularly why you want to know what the grist is. I'd love to know the essential spinning tools, and the nice to have ones. I'm also even more beginning with a support spindle - I'm interested in everything you have to share about that. So hopefully you will end up doing both chats. Thanks so much for finding the time to do these video chats. harpingJanet

Thank you Janet. This is so kind of you and I’m so grateful to hear it was helpful. I’ll definitely do more spin and chats and talk about all of those things. Excited for you to ply for the first time- plying is my favorite.

Love this video! As a spinner of nearly 15 years, I found your explanations through, accurate and easy to understand. You even reminded me of a few good practices. Thank you!!!

It’s a cold snowy Sunday morning in the Midwest, just sat down with coffee and thought I was going to knit a few rows until I came across your video! Instead I got my ECHO out with some BFL I started this week! It was lovely spinning with you! I am a 1 year spinner and still learning, I received my Echo in Oct and I LOVE IT!❤

This was a wonderful video! I learned so much. I’ve been spinning, now I’m in the middle of a sweaters quantity, and I just got an espinner for Christmas and I love it! The Sparrow. I’m trying to learn chain plying.

This Vlog is soooooo informative! Thank you very must for making grist understanding to me. Yards to pounds has always been so confusing to me. Keep the Vlogs coming!

Great chat! I am familiar with grist when I am trying to match a yarn I am thinking of purchasing and making sure it will work with the pattern I want to use it for, so your explanation for spinning & grist was super helpful.
I love your description of how to get consistent! I am focused this year on getting consistent with my spinning time so I can eventually spin for projects vs just spinning to spin (and then knitting a shawl 😂) . My goal is to spin for a sweater in the fall.

Well that was fun! I even stopped knitting for the grist explanation. Thanks for that. I saved this video to rewatch that part again. I vote for must haves, although I enjoy watching spindle spinning, I'm not sure my hands would be agile enough to do that. I'll watch whatever you do:)

I hope the grist explanation wasn’t confusing. I figured since most of us understand skein weights/yardage it would help make it more relatable.

This was great! It filled in some information that is heard but didn't understand. I'd love it if you'd do plant fibers, especially linen, bamboo an maybe cotton. Thanks for doing this

I love your vibe! I am new to spinning, I have an Ashford 3. I am looking at a wheel, either the Ledrum DT or Spinolution Exho, I see you have the echo, it looks like it spins easy for you. I found your explanations very easy and thorough, looking forward to more content.

I am a weaver. I decided that wool spinning would be fun in order to make start to finish scarves and shawls. I have a Schacht Ladybug coming in about 6 weeks. I am devouring spinning videos because I feel like a fish out of water. I am retired and this seems a whole lot better use of my time than making birdhouses! LOL😅

Wait, but I love a good birdhouse! 🤣😍 Have you Checked out Rachel Smith @ Wool N Spinning? She’s a weaver too and has quite a few projects with handspun. A whole weaving series too.

I've just finished my first skein for an upcoming find your fade shawl (and maybe for a So faded pullover). Then I realized the Weekender KAL is around the corner and I haven't done any spinning (not to mention knitting..), so I'll switch to that. While listening to you, I was working on the collar of Comfort Fade Cardi (handdyed yarns) and yup, I'm in love with Andrea's portfolio right now. :) Can't wait to see that finished yellow skein!

So many great WIPs and future wips! There’s never enough time to make all the things.
I haven’t spun for the weekender either and keep going back and forth on trying to hurry and get it done or just keep it on in my list of future projects.

So when you talk about sampling can you buy say 100g of polwarth wool (undyed) from one place, and sample it. Then go and find the hand dyed polwarth from another shop? Or do you recommend buying say polwarth from Created by Elsie B and then going back and ordering the sweater quantity you need? I hope that makes sense. I ask bc you can get under cheaper from some and smaller quantities to just sample and then you may see that hey I don't love polwarth, which who is crazy enough not to?!
