      @@jonathanlorio3265 I would like to state that LGBT is trying to ensure equality, so if an LGBT actor can portray a straight person, then the opposite should also be allowed. He played the role perfectly, and no one else could have given the same exact effect that Michael brought to the table.

      Hi Rainbow, i totally agree with you. I would have fit right into that group. I was athletic, well liked, in the closet, regular guy in high school! i never saw myself in movies or tv. it's awesome to see Gay, portrayed as Functional, Normalized and Mainstreamed. It's about time. I think that i may be the only person who is actually going to watch the show, epo by epo, for the next 9 weeks. I refuse to binge watch. i want to make it last as long as possible. my partner and i have a Victor , date night, every friday, even if the quarantine is lifted. Stay safe, keep yourself occupied with positive stuff.

    Personally as a gay man myself I don’t mind straight actors playing gay roles... because gay actors can play straight roles.. the only time I think it’s a problem is when they hire CIS actors for trans roles because they’re not hiring trans actors in other parts so it’s stealing the few parts out there for them

    • @shawnzt4782
      @shawnzt4782 4 роки тому +7

      Yeah, I think the main factor that makes it fine for me as well, is that being gay is something that's inside you, it's not like skin color. Whitewashing in movies is a huge problem, but I think straight men can get away with playing gay characters because it's something that isn't readily primed in the audition room like skin color is. I do wonder how systemic homophobia would affect the casting directors' decisions if they ask every potential actor/actress if they are LGBT plus and know that info going into the audition. I think we could see a big disparity between gay/straight actors playing the characters. I have noticed that most of the popularized LGBTQ content has white straight men at the forefront, and while they do a phenomenal job in their roles (Sean Penn as Harvey Milk, Heath Ledger as Ennis Del Mar, etc.), I think we need more diversity within this community, and this series helps with that for sure. I love it!

The character of Felix is a little confusing with the whole obsession with Lake thing, but who else also loved the cameos of Lake's mother who is also friend American Horror Story Apocalypse and 1985?! She's one of my favorite characters in that series, other than the cast of Coven on the whole.

    I love how organic everything felt. Usually in shows like these, they just put EVERY check from their checklist to have all kinds of representation put in place. One show that suffered from it was “The Fosters” and I stopped watching it the first time I saw it. It became very unrealistic and kept adding all kinds of unnecessary drama. But I decided to try again actually liked it. “Love, Victor” does great representing not only healthy relationships for the LGBTQ+ community but for straight people as well. @ambiguoussubtext7343 4 роки тому +41

    Yes Grace, I too understand the reasons behind "only lgbt actors for lgbt roles", but I don't believe it to be a perfect way of solving this problem. You can't make an actor tell you what they are, so then, would you limit your casting to only actors that are out? And maybe outing them in the process because they wanted/needed the JOB?. The thing about sexuality (LGB...) is that anyone can be it, it's not something more visibly identifiable like ethinicity or gender (to some extend), and doing research on the subject of a project and having good chemistry between actors are part of being a good actor/casting director. Actors are instruments used to play stories created by the writers. So if the problem would be "authenticity" then the biggest concern should be having an LGBT writer amongst the creative team of a TV show/movie to accuaretely give input on the story.
    PS: the T is about gender, and they are way more marginalized and invisible in the media in general. so I do believe trans actors should play trans roles.

    • @vinceonvhs5228
      @vinceonvhs5228 4 роки тому +3

      It's not about authenticity. It's about out lgbt actors getting work. With straight actors it's always "anyone can play anything" while we are somehow "not the right fit" to play our selves. That's just BS.

    • @devinngeorge
      @devinngeorge 4 роки тому +3

      @@vinceonvhs5228 Yes, i mentioned authenticity because is one of the reasons I also hear. And I agree with you, it's tottally BS that excuse. And while nowadays we see more of LGBT actors in straight roles, I do recognize that the majority are well stablished and known (not to mention white) actors. Also, take Love, Victor, where most of the cast are young unknown actors.. They could be LGBT and just not ready to come out (Keiynan Lonsdale was in Love, Simon and wasnt out yet), as far as we know Nick Robinson may be straight, but then again he might be bi, or anything else for that matter, My point is, even if the actor in an LGBT film/series isn't out (beacuse people just assume the "straight" is the default) , it shouldn't be a reason to criticise the actor/film/series as you would with they whitewashing a role.

    • @archraskal
      @archraskal 4 роки тому

      @@vinceonvhs5228 Your reasoning is crap. It's the best actor for the role. You want to impose a quota system. Gay actors aren't entitled to be preferred because they share the same sexual orientation as the character. Most gay actors have been selected for straight parts over straight people. This identity issue is bogus.

    In my opinion, I think Love, Victor was very by the numbers, complete with fan fic energy (working with Benji at the coffee shop, he's in a band, going on a road trip and staying a night in a motel, etc) and certain tropes, with even the characters falling into molds. However, it was still enjoyable for me to binge. Fingers crossed we get a season two. I wish Love Victor was on Disney Plus so more people could have viewed it. When I was coming out I was also confused because I thought me and my girlfriend were perfect but it was all surface level. It is super interesting!! I have never seen it done better in a show. @therandobandothomas1849 4 роки тому +1

      I agree the representation was very well but so many things were definitely rushed. They needed to make season 1 longer. They wanted to build a friendship, love story while a teen figures himself out and also try to build into him falling for another boy and discovering himself into 10 episodes. It lacked on building relationships with Benji as many were just purely forced scenes for sure. This show tried to fit so many issues, a complicated, and 2 love stories into 10 episodes. It was found to lack in many places. If they made season 1 like 15 episodes or maybe each episode 1 hour then this show would be much better. Even his high school life we didn’t see much of it at all. Half of benji scenes were just victor admiring Benji. They rushed it at the end for sure.

    Grace, I want to thank you so much for your full coverage and support of this show! You're my go-to source for entertainment news, and it means a lot for you to so vocally support inclusive projects such as this one. This was a wonderful review, and I can't wait to see more Love, Victor stuff from you when the show *hopefully* gets renewed for another season.
    I appreciated your comment about LGBTQ+ actors playing LGBTQ+ characters, and while it doesn't apply to the entire community (trans actors HAVE to play trans characters, as explained by Jen Richards in Netflix's Disclosure documentary - which I highly recommend), it has never upset me when a talented straight-identifying actor plays a well-written gay character because for me, at the end of the day, they're just playing a romantic storyline, and as long as there is chemistry and solid writing, I don't feel like I need to know an actor's very personal business (though it's always wonderful when they choose to share it).
    As for Love, Victor, I thought this season was an incredibly well-written teen drama/comedy, full of flawed-but-relatable characters, and wonderful representation for a variety of communities. (I also highly recommend One Day at a Time for a solid Latinx-led family comedy, which is just incredible, and also includes a lot of LGBTQ+ representation.) I can't wait for season 2, and to see a deeper exploration into Victor's family life as they deal with a lot of major changes! Thanks again!

    I actually really enjoyed this show, however I was not so happy how it turned out all things considered. For one because the writers didn’t even bother to give Benji, the love interest of the main protagonist, a backstory, nor contributing anything to his character. Instead I was rooting for Mia and Victor since I thought that her character was quite interesting and had some depth to it. For me they should have definitely given more screentime to other characters than how much they ultimatelly gave victors parents, because I thought that it was a bit too much screentime for them. I also thought that the episode with the grandparents felt really rushed and didn’t have a meaningful impact to it. Other than that it really represented the LGBTQ community quite well in my opinion.

I have to disagree with Felix, to me there are people like him and he was a good friend to Victor, the best part for me was the feeling inside when Victor was telling the awful BF how Benji is great, and the face of Benji was priceless, also that kiss and the ending, great, season must be done!!

    I loved the show and I hope it gets more seasons. But I really craved more and I’m not just talking about the cliffhanger. I felt like we could have used more scenes with Victor and Benji so they can really develop their connection. In the last episode, Benji says that he can be himself around Victor. I feel like we only got to see that when they dance to “Call Me Maybe,” when they tried to make a meatball in the latte (the night Benji’s ex ditched him), and when they were in the thrift store. I really wanted more of those scenes. But of course I’m just being nit picky and my suggestions won’t change season 1. I just hope they don’t hasten the development in season 2.

    Eventhough I'm LGBT I found the blooming romance between the two other teens much more realistic and touching. The show was such a fresh concept so I was hoping they would not do the cliche of having the girlfriend walk in on the kiss, would have been so much better if the jock redeemed himself by helping Victor break the news to his girlfriend.

I found so many interesting aspects to the series, but the thing I thought they did brilliantly was incorporating casual homophobia without having obnoxious, unrealistic characters. So I watched the entire show after watching this review, I was hesitant but wow this was in my opinion how they recovered from how Love Simon was way too fictional and too “Disney”, finally something I was able to relate to, so thank you Fox Television and Hulu for making this show and thank you Grace for the review, even after watching this I was surprised and entertained for the entire show, in a way it wasn’t spoiled to me after this review, I guess that this is just as Simon said, not every story is the same and this show did a great job depicting so many stories and finally getting somewhere that is not stereotypical. Loved it, I hope we get a season 2. PS. I loved Felix and Lake, great cast!

    The "best actor gets the role" argument only works if out, gay actors are considered for straight roles as often as straight actors are considered for gay roles. It's insane how established, flamboyant, gay actors are rarely considered for straight roles and yet casting directors will be more than willing to cast straight actors to play flamboyant gay characters.

    I ended up liking Felix and Lake, though I can understand the lack of appeal for some. They have a very cliche relationship, unpopular kid and popular kid, but I think what elevated it for me was the more grounded backstories they had. Lake being a reporter’s daughter made her superficiality understandable for me, as she constantly felt either used as a means to someone else, or self-conscious about her looks (that lengthy bit of her mother benignly insulting her was an excellent addition). And seeing Felix’s apartment was really eye-opening. Suddenly it made sense why he was so chipper, he was probably trying to keep people from realizing the state of his home life.
    But those scenes were pretty short, so I can’t exactly fault others for not being swayed by it enough. Thankfully, it worked for me, and I was able to enjoy the show that much more.
