I've read a couple of huge books about the whole story of the brand, but they missed this part because the books were published before alessandro michele was appointed, so I really appreciate you're telling me this part of the story of Gucci I've been following what Michele has done for Gucci, and he has done such a great work, so far, in general i prefer minimalist aesthetic, but as I've studied Italian, in a sense I also appreciate the maximalism that comes with this culture, and Michele does that very well, from the garments to the runway shows, I think he has kind of a clear vision of what the Gucci aesthetic is to him, so he's able to express it season after season, and even if you don't like him or his work, he definitely made Gucci the number 1 brand in the world in 2017/18, so he deserves our respect !
Same! Great minds think alike 🔥. I also have books on Tom Ford & Frida Giannini at Gucci but recently the Alessandro story peaked my interest which is what made me want to make this video. I think for me his work at Gucci is great whether it’s one’s personal cup of tea or not. It’s all about eras and timing and Alessandro certainly made his mark with a new fresh take on Gucci. Tom Ford’s provocative and sexy look will always be missed but one of the things I’ve always loved about fashion is the ever changing nature.

Alessandro's Gucci is like the art student/thriftstore aesthetics for rich people who don't want to go to the thriftstore. It's like Alessandro got there first and picked all the goodies, and then Demna was left with the oversized stuff
Alessandro has created his own world and aesthetic so strongly that for me it seems so natural that this is what Gucci should be like. I also think one thing you can take away from this is that even large brands can be rejuvenated if they're smart and willing to take risks. I think any large brand that trys to hedge too much towards safety should heed the warning.
No lie I can honestly say, as much as I love and respect Tom Ford, it is Alessandro Michele that has truly made me fall in love with Gucci as a whole. Like his whole aesthetic with the way he does his shows and even adverts i adore. I can honestly say it's the first era of a brand where I love practically all they produce. One of my dreams is to one day have access to his clothes.

Alessandro is pure emotion. Those colors get into our mood, you smile without showing your teeth. On his campaigns, models walk on high heels without knowing how to do so, and it's just the awkward feeling we experience doing something without such confidence, like the youngers do all the time. Love it!

It's crazy how doubt stays high for new designers. They're just mad that GUCCI lost that boring chic aesthetic. I'd say Alessandro did an amazing job crafting modern GUCCI. Especially FW 2018, with the dragons and such.
Alessandro's fw18 collection grabbed my attention so hard I immediately started selling off all my streetwear to buy into Gucci. I saw this boldly romantic, neo-vintage, and vaguely mystic imagery conveyed through clothing and I was hooked. This was my window into designer and high fashion and I never looked back.
At the time when alesandro released his first collection i was 15 and still in high school and fell in live with his vintage androgynous vision, I felt like no one else was doing what he was doing, and at the time Gucci just felt like any other generi luxury brand.
Alessandro did change Gucci for the better. He tapped into the Youth’s desire to escape. You don’t need to take a jet for a trip when you have social media or a mushroom lol. When I had a little more disposable income a lot of my first luxury purchases were Alessandro’s Gucci pieces. My favorite being a double gg belt with the snake.
That was the criticism of jacquemus that I was waiting to hear. It’s not that the clothes are terrible- and I love the story- but there’s room for a lot of evolution that needs to be explored
I like the clothes too (to an extent) but he really hasn’t evolved at all and I feel like that can be attributed to him having one too many yes men around him.
I've been following Simon since his first collection. There aren't many French designers on the official PFW calendar (maybe just a quarter), so he is really the French darling like Marine Serre. I wouldn't say that he has too many yes men, it's more like the French are rooting for him. French brands rarely evolve, I compare him to Isabel Marant and Vanessa Bruno. Not interesting, but what the basic Parisian crowd loves.
Hard to predict what the future for Gucci holds and its direction. Michele really outdid himself as a creative director, his take on maximalism and romanticism has elevated the brand even further. If he leaves someday, finding a replacement for him will be tough.
I think it's interesting the way you commented on Alessandro's designs as being accessible to a larger audience through the styling. I think this is so important. I would be interested to know who or if they worked with a stylist for the first collection he did. Maybe I have a slightly biased opinion but I really think styling is so overlooked from the design perspective and actually I think this is the thing that has a greater impact on trends in general as it is something that can be replicated by anyone using different pieces.
I love Alessandro’s work he definitely is making an impact and giving Gucci a new style but also a refreshing style that works for everyone of all ages and all types as well as not being afraid to be UNIQUE

I think Alessandro’s finding a muse in Harry Styles also helped reach young people who wanted to feel fashionable but fresh...not slaves to their parents idea of being well dressed....I love how AM has blurred the lines on his runway and HS also has bravely opened up his feminine side on stage.

In my opinion, Alessandro has an incredible idea of fashion, because for him it involves history, self-love, sexuality, romanticism, youth, political messages and flamboyance. His creations always look nostalgic, because, as you said, he wants to involve older people in fashion, and these people need to live youth again, while real young people from our generation live life with a bit of sense of nostalgia. I appreciate the fact that he's able to bring femininity in menswear and andorgyny in womenswear, creating romantic garments made out with an amazing craftsmanship and incredibly original.
There’s a really funny bit in one of the Gucci documentaries on amazon where you see Frida par Alessandro so hard about a bag looking too granny and he looks like he’s going to cry. He damn well showed her!
The Fashion Archive i lowkey love Frida’s work but in the documentary she comes over as a bit of a b word unfortunately. I think she comes from a pre-social media where the miranda priestly boss was the de facto and you couldn’t really get shit for it online.
Affluence is going out, this is the new generation, vintage is aspirational because many people don't inherit iconic pieces from their parents or grandparents. Just look at China for example.

The clothes and the styling don’t really have to sell as long as they are instrumental in selling the accessories. I was an account executive for Christian Dior Perfumes in LA in the 90’s when they opened the boutique on Rodeo. The clothing sets up the mood, inspires people to aspire to the lifestyle, the luxury, the feeling of being elevated and special. A person may not be able to afford the clothing or the handbags or even the jewelry but she might buy one new Dior lipstick per season and feel like a million dollars when she whips it out of her purse.

So appreciated! definitely, Gucci of Tom Ford was something very provocative and sexy, but after him leaving it`s blurred out in a way. with his own brand of Tom Ford he does an amazing job at catering the sexiness to the world, which is not for older women, but aspires the young ones (not with the prices though). But Gucci 2015 shows were sooo eyecatching, so warm. I remember them very nicely from the 2015. I think Alessandro did a tremendously wonderful job!I really like his vision and his personality! So engaging to listen to their podcast and follow the work with Elton and Harry! Now you can see and tell that amount of copycats is so high (not very good thing, but) even jeans, but when it was pre 2015 Gucci the only thing that were copied were belts and purses. Clothes was not generic, but not so distinguishable from other brands

Ultimately it’s Alessandro’s vision so he will have the final say and it’s clear Alessandro’s styling is very specific as it was so different to the Gucci before him. That being said a company as big as Gucci should have a whole styling team too who definitely help bring his vision to life.

Something to also take into consideration when talking about the sales numbers is Guccis brilliant marketing strategy for Michele's collections, utilizing bloggers and influencers in a way that was not possible in Giannini's days. Especially when it comes to targeting a younger generation. As you pointed out, there's a multiple teams involved in the success of a brand.
You changed my perception of Gucci from being a snobby Italian brand to a brand that actually pushes for a modern style that doesn't always revolve around the jet-set lifestyle you mentioned. Heck, I'm considering to look into Gucci pieces that suits my aesthetic. Great work Ayo keep it up :)
Gucci has definitely very much changed over the years due to Alessandro and gone far far away from being about the jet-set lifestyle. Alessandro understands the youth and what relates to a younger demographic of people.
Great point about the androgynous thing, the taboo is definitely almost exclusively on the men's side, so its great to see more men on the runway rocking new styles

I thought that you would mention that with his collections he has crutualy changed so much not just for Gucci, but in the Fashion industry in general, now so many designers hate Michelle "for ruining fashion", that goes along with that vintage vibe, that you have mentioned. And because now you don't pretty much know now which garment is from which collection, they have become sort of timeless, they are unique, you can wear them longer, so other designers kind of hate Michelle for that.

You’re right, his esthetic is young and free and he is creating clothes that he loves, that emotion transcends in every design l remember that collection, you make remember how I wanted every piece and if couldn’t afford it and that’s precisely what every brand wants to achieve. honestly many houses are so scared to reinvent themselves that they play it safe and repeat themselves continuously, a video about other brands that have done this would be great.

I think what he does is consistently appropriate. Gucci designs are good. There’s a lot of staples and what not. It’s not a hit every time but never a miss. Never. I think he has a long time to go.
I just watched this video but still want to comment. Honestly I think Alessandro is the best that could happen to Gucci, otherwise it would have died and no one would be buying their things. Alessandro is doing soooo good and Gucci today (2022) is better than ever before, even with its ups and downs (people starting to love it and now disliking it) but honestly it’s still going very very strong
I remember gucci being a very stuffy, "old money" type of brand before Michele's time. Makes sense how the bags he designed are a strong part of the product offering, I appreciate how they're not just copies of what's on the market with a gucci logo on them. Great video!
Maybe people are not enough used to novelty, so they often can't even say if they like it or not. In my opinion fashion is such a big part of art that one need some background and knowledge in art to understand fashion at all. I see 'new Gucci' exactly being what fashion is to me, like Prada or Marc Jacobs, distinctive style, very good taste, honesty. Fast fashion and duplication kill people's capacity to have an opinion. Sometimes I think Gucci's bags, belts, sneakers sell well because they became part of the 'must have' of street fashion, just more expensive than other brands, not because A.Michele's style is appreciated.
It’s so interesting to see, how in 2021 he has influenced the face of fashion so much and literally changed peoples idea of appreciation of fashion. Appreciation of gender conformity in dress or lack thereof. Appreciation of an approach to fashion that considers different realities (rather then talking to a small percentage of people of a very specific income and age group.). Obviously Gucci’s costumer has a particular financial background in order to afford. But as you said, these looks are very reminiscent of something. Twenty something could have put together through vintage stores, archival fashion, fashion outlets and sales. I appreciate his vision a lot. And to be honest, I think to be a accessory designer, there is a particular kind of sophistication required. We often think of outfits first and add the accessory on top. Oftentimes it may be the least loudest thing in an outfit. When you approach it the other way around, the story being told may be a lot more cohesive and complete. Just some thoughts. In my opinion, Alessandro has an incredible idea of fashion, because for him it involves history, self-love, sexuality, romanticism, youth, political messages and flamboyance. His creations always look nostalgic, because, as you said, he wants to involve older people in fashion, and these people need to live youth again, while real young people from our generation live life with a bit of sense of nostalgia. I appreciate the fact that he's able to bring femininity in menswear and andorgyny in womenswear, creating romantic garments made out with an amazing craftsmanship and incredibly original.
There’s a really funny bit in one of the Gucci documentaries on amazon where you see Frida par Alessandro so hard about a bag looking too granny and he looks like he’s going to cry. He damn well showed her!

The Fashion Archive i lowkey love Frida’s work but in the documentary she comes over as a bit of a b word unfortunately. I think she comes from a pre-social media where the miranda priestly boss was the de facto and you couldn’t really get shit for it online.

Affluence is going out, this is the new generation, vintage is aspirational because many people don't inherit iconic pieces from their parents or grandparents. Just look at China for example.

Thank you for this highly informative video about Gucci. Tom Ford made Gucci relevant again. What an inspirational story about Alessandro Michele! He followed his instincts. The clothes and the styling don’t really have to sell as long as they are instrumental in selling the accessories.
I was an account executive for Christian Dior Perfumes in LA in the 90’s when they opened the boutique on Rodeo. The clothing sets up the mood, inspires people to aspire to the lifestyle, the luxury, the feeling of being elevated and special. A person may not be able to afford the clothing or the handbags or even the jewelry but she might buy one new Dior lipstick per season and feel like a million dollars when she whips it out of her purse.

So appreciated! definitely, Gucci of Tom Ford was something very provocative and sexy, but after him leaving it`s blurred out in a way. with his own brand of Tom Ford he does an amazing job at catering the sexiness to the world, which is not for older women, but aspires the young ones (not with the prices though). But Gucci 2015 shows were sooo eyecatching, so warm. I remember them very nicely from the 2015. I think Alessandro did a tremendously wonderful job!I really like his vision and his personality! So engaging to listen to their podcast and follow the work with Elton and Harry! Now you can see and tell that amount of copycats is so high (not very good thing, but) even jeans, but when it was pre 2015 Gucci the only thing that were copied were belts and purses. Clothes was not generic, but not so distinguishable from other brands

Ultimately it’s Alessandro’s vision so he will have the final say and it’s clear Alessandro’s styling is very specific as it was so different to the Gucci before him. That being said a company as big as Gucci should have a whole styling team too who definitely help bring his vision to life.

Something to also take into consideration when talking about the sales numbers is Guccis brilliant marketing strategy for Michele's collections, utilizing bloggers and influencers in a way that was not possible in Giannini's days. Especially when it comes to targeting a younger generation. As you pointed out, there's a multiple teams involved in the success of a brand.
You changed my perception of Gucci from being a snobby Italian brand to a brand that actually pushes for a modern style that doesn't always revolve around the jet-set lifestyle you mentioned. Heck, I'm considering to look into Gucci pieces that suits my aesthetic. Great work Ayo keep it up :)
Gucci has definitely very much changed over the years due to Alessandro and gone far far away from being about the jet-set lifestyle. Alessandro understands the youth and what relates to a younger demographic of people.
Great point about the androgynous thing, the taboo is definitely almost exclusively on the men's side, so its great to see more men on the runway rocking new styles

I thought that you would mention that with his collections he has crutualy changed so much not just for Gucci, but in the Fashion industry in general, now so many designers hate Michelle "for ruining fashion", that goes along with that vintage vibe, that you have mentioned. And because now you don't pretty much know now which garment is from which collection, they have become sort of timeless, they are unique, you can wear them longer, so other designers kind of hate Michelle for that.

You’re right, his esthetic is young and free and he is creating clothes that he loves, that emotion transcends in every design l remember that collection, you make remember how I wanted every piece and if couldn’t afford it and that’s precisely what every brand wants to achieve. honestly many houses are so scared to reinvent themselves that they play it safe and repeat themselves continuously, a video about other brands that have done this would be great.

I think what he does is consistently appropriate. Gucci designs are good. There’s a lot of staples and what not. It’s not a hit every time but never a miss. Never. I think he has a long time to go.

I just watched this video but still want to comment. Honestly I think Alessandro is the best that could happen to Gucci, otherwise it would have died and no one would be buying their things. Alessandro is doing soooo good and Gucci today (2022) is better than ever before, even with its ups and downs (people starting to love it and now disliking it) but honestly it’s still going very very strong
He is a storyteller! Every look could be a character in a book, or in a film...
I remember gucci being a very stuffy, "old money" type of brand before Michele's time. Makes sense how the bags he designed are a strong part of the product offering, I appreciate how they're not just copies of what's on the market with a gucci logo on them. Great video!

Maybe people are not enough used to novelty, so they often can't even say if they like it or not. In my opinion fashion is such a big part of art that one need some background and knowledge in art to understand fashion at all. I see 'new Gucci' exactly being what fashion is to me, like Prada or Marc Jacobs, distinctive style, very good taste, honesty. Fast fashion and duplication kill people's capacity to have an opinion. Sometimes I think Gucci's bags, belts, sneakers sell well because they became part of the 'must have' of street fashion, just more expensive than other brands, not because A.Michele's style is appreciated.

It’s so interesting to see, how in 2021 he has influenced the face of fashion so much and literally changed peoples idea of appreciation of fashion. Appreciation of gender conformity in dress or lack thereof. Appreciation of an approach to fashion that considers different realities (rather then talking to a small percentage of people of a very specific income and age group.). Obviously Gucci’s costumer has a particular financial background in order to afford. But as you said, these looks are very reminiscent of something. Twenty something could have put together through vintage stores, archival fashion, fashion outlets and sales. I appreciate his vision a lot. And to be honest, I think to be a accessory designer, there is a particular kind of sophistication required. We often think of outfits first and add the accessory on top. Oftentimes it may be the least loudest thing in an outfit. When you approach it the other way around, the story being told may be a lot more cohesive and complete. Just some thoughts. I like him a lot. Always have
