I'm so happy that I saw Television for the first and last time in 2019. I dig your list - nailed it as usual. I'm a massive fan of Costello's first 5 albums. Imperial Bedroom and Blood & Chocolate are quite good as well. I have an excellent Ian Dury compilation but New Boots is a killer album. Really enjoying your vids. Take care
Great vid Matt , one of my favorite yrs for music 🎶. I was 17 then and had some money, a car, girlfriends and a yr to go till high school is done lol. I have all those LP,s except that Neil Young you showed first. Cheers.
Possibly my favourite year ever. I could've easily picked 40 albums but these 20 take some beating. Props for including Sleepwalker in your selections. A brilliant album that deserves more acclaim. 20. Barclay James Harvest - Gone To Earth 19. Poco - Indian Summer 18. Van Morrison - A Period Of Transition 17. Camel - Rain Dances 16. Boxer - Absolutely 15. Pat Travers - Makin' Magic 14. Utopia - Ra 13. Pink Floyd - Animals 12. Yes - Going For The One 11. Bryan Ferry - In Your Mind 10. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Street Survivors 9. Nils Lofgren - I Came To Dance 8. Jethro Tull - Songs From The Wood 7. Sensational Alex Harvey Band(Without Alex) - Fourplay 6. Hawkwind - Quark Strangeness And Charm 5. Television - Marquee Moon 4. Horslips - Aliens 3. Uriah Heep - Innocent Victim 2. Blue Oyster Cult - Spectres 1. UFO - LIGHTS OUT
I'm with you on Marquee Moon! I've loved that album since I bought it in 1979. Two years earlier, in March, 1977, I went to my first rock concert: Peter Gabriel on his first post-Genesis solo tour with Television as the opening act. It was a mind-blowing experience for a 10th-grader from a small Michigan town! A great memory. (And "Humdrum" is my favorite track on PG's 1st album.) Thanks for another enjoyable video!
Top ten: Cheap Trick- in Color, Bowie- Low, ELO- Out of The Blue, Commodores' self titled album, Queen's- News of the World, Bob Marley- Exodus, Iggy Pop-up Lust For Life, Fleetwood Mac- Rumours, Parliament- Mothership Connection, Earth, Wind and Fire- All in All.
Nice job! I can only wonder if you had to think it thru a couple times before you felt you got the ranking to your satisfaction. Sych a great representation of the old guard, new directions that older bands were voing in and the arrival of punk . A big year of change. Man, that copy of Aja looks brand spankin new! Very cool, cant wait for the next one!
Totally agree about Marquee Moon. I had a CD version that included ‘little Johnny jewel on it’. Blew my mind - the album is a masterpiece. Also, can’t deny the Saturday night fever soundtrack - although I didn’t get into until the late 80s… Shoes - Black Vinyl Shoes is an album I like better than some of your choices. Ramones - Leave Home and Modern Lovers - Rock n Roll with the Modern Lovers, are favorites from ‘77 as well.
Quite often I walk past Hammersmith odeon another classic London music haunt . I always think of Bowie doing Ziggy there and Steve Jones from the Sex Pistols going round the back and stealing Bowie mics and PA . Believe me it’s all security now . I saw Steely Dan there twice ! Once saw them at Wembley arena and then the next day at Hammersmith odeon. Punk and the Dan ! Yeah
Great list, as usual you cover most of the bases, though I would include a couple of underrated gems by two of my favorite artists, Stick to Me by Graham Parker and the Rumour and Short Eyes by Curtis Mayfield. For the record, Joe Jackson also does an excellent cover of See No Evil on his brilliant album Fast Forward.
I graduated from high school in 1977 from Whitney Point, NY. Bat Out of Hell was a top played album. Once I got into college in 1979 (Buffalo State), I heard more New Wave groups, punk. Yes, for Elvis Costello debut. Yeah for ELO. I agree that Rumors has been played to death - I heard it so much. I will look at the 1977 discography to see if there are more I like.

I'd add Wire's debut, and Before and After Science. Possibly Rocket to Russia as well. 1977 was a good year, Songs of the Woods, Animals, Trans-Europe Express. Heaps of good albums
A decent list, and yes, your favorites. I thought for sure that Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Street Survivors" would get a mention. Other great albums- Queen "News of the World"- Foreigner's self-titled debut- Billy Joel "The Stranger"- Heart- "Little Queen"- Meatloaf "Bat Out of Hell"- Pink Floyd "Animals"-Steve Miller Band "Book of Dreams"- Linda Ronstadt "Simple Dreams" -Styx "The Grand Illusion" - Frank Zappa "Live in New York"
Walked through Walthamstow market where the Ian Dury cover was shot , in the photo Woolworths is visible in the shop window. Woolworths went bust so is no longer there . Ian went to art college in Walthamstow.
I definitely would have had Street Survivors from Skynyrd in there. Probably their best output. "That Smell" is a masterpiece. Storytelling at its finest.

I’d also consider Ramones’ Leave Home or Rocket to Russia, Pink Floyd’s Animals and Brian Eno’s Before and After Science (although not his best I love his 70’s output up to Apollo in 1983). Cheers!
The biggest surprise here is Kill City over Lust For Life. Dude. I love most things Iggy did, but not that. It's just a demo of him and James trying to drum up label interest for another Stooges album on weekend breaks from the hospital while Iggy was strung out and trying to get it together. The only truly finished and decent song they did, the "I Got a Right" single, isn't even on it. I'd argue Lust for Life is the best thing that came out of the five albums between Iggy and Bowie in Berlin. Agreed on Television of course. The Congos is a hypnotic masterpiece. I get your not liking Wire, but figured you'd like The Saints and The Stranglers. 🤣👍 if you had a few record stores, ended with cd-appearance, you could get almost allergic to everything like top 10, or music for the masses. because for weeks, one was tortured by listening to them all day, at work. that’s why I never listened and liked all the mainstream stuff...in private... and always searched for the unpopular and unknown jewels.. and there were so many.... finally ended up in jazz 🤣🤣🤣

"new rose" was the first punk single, probably in 76. album really was not talked about back then, so no idea who released the first punk LP
The damned
The Gibb brothers are super talented!
I like B G's earlier 70s or late 60s material better.
As a kid who grew up in rural NY I couldn't grasp disco, Beach Boys.
Pink Floyd - Animals
Robin Trower - In City Dreams
Iggy and James Williamson worked together again in the last Stooges reunion
Never mind the bollocks is among the best 10 records ever.
The absence of Wire (Pink Flag) is shocking to me. Probably the most innovative band to come out of punk movement.
Apart from that, good list. Thanks.
I need to pick up Pink Flag. Never owned it.
Great list. Lots of overlap to what I might choose but I would probably add Styx’s Grand Illusion 😂 just kidding. I’d be adding Wire’s Pink Flag near the top, competing with Marquee Moon. I like the looseness of Kill City. Consolation Prizes is great. Love Night Theme, No Sense Of Crime, Johanna. Nice variety on this album.

Disco sounds like Mozart ! Classic opinion
