Agreed. It's mind boggling that Portland doesn't have any major parks. The metro has a high population, qnd the hilly terrain would make for some nice landscape. They can pull off the same trick that Busch Gardens uses to get extra hight on there coasters, by using the terrain to there advantage.
I was born in Portland in 69, and learned to roller skate here in the early 80's, now I'm 54 and live in Texas, miss Oregon so much but so very pleased to know that the park has survived, I've told my wife stories about my experiences at the park, we'll have to visit this place on my next visit to Portland in 2024.
Also note that Oaks Park is a non-profit organization. They have the oldest roller rink in the world, and with the only one left with a working pipe organ, with the second largest floor in the USA. The park is one of the few (maybe only?) original trolley parks that are left in the country. They opened in 1905 and the only season it's ever been closed was last year during covid, they have been open during the world wars and have survived 2 major floods. If it does flood, the floor in the skating rink can be cut away from the wall and can float with the waterline. Their oldest ride is the 1913 Herschell-Spillman Noah's Ark Carousel. The rink IS a MUST visit. Smoothest floor you will ever skate on. Even has the wave floor in the back.
@@personmcmann60 The park is/was built on stilts (it has since been filled in). The barrels were added in 1948 floor to the main rink floor when they rebuilt the skating floor.
Portland born and raised. Our high school senior overnight party was at Oaks Park long before the new additions. Going there is a bit like stepping back in time to the days of the small local amusement parks and fairs.
I went in 2008 when they had Looping Thunder instead of Adrenalin Peak. Looping Thunder was my first ever coaster inversion, so I was sad to see it's gone. It was 14 years ago, but I remember having a great time. You're review basically sums up my experience there.
Oaks Park and Enchanted Forest were my first amusement park experiences growing up and I loved them. I'd recommend pairing a visit with one of the weekly beer festivals.
I grew up on Oregon. The Pacific Northwest needs to get a new park. I don't care if it needs to be indoors. The closest things are the parks in Sacramento and the Bay Area or Silverwood in Idaho. While Silverwood is a pretty good park overall, it's out of the way, even for most people in the region. Oaks, Enchanted Forest and Wild Waves aren't enough (though Enchanted Forest is actually pretty cool despite being so small.) Someone needs to put in a seasonal park like Adventureland in Iowa or even something that has the space and potential to grow like Holiday World has. I know the PNW won't get a major Cedar Fair or Six Flags park and certainly nothing from Herschend, SeaWorld, Disney or Universal. But it needs something a bit more substantial.
how is the drive down to discovery kingdom in vallejo? i know it must be an exhaustingly long drive, but can you just take the 101 straight down the whole trip or is that out of the way? I'm down in central California so I'm curious
@@reg1m0nz83 obviously, it depends on where you live in terms of getting to the Bay Area. The 101 is a very lovely drive but if you are further north than Medford it becomes quite the trip, compared to most placed in the country (except the Eastern Idaho to the Dakotas, and Alaska and Hawaii.) For most people, I-5 is a faster route, even to the Bay Area. I lived in central Oregon and that would mean an 8-9 hour trip to get to the Bay Area. I now live on the East Coast and I probably have at least 15 medium to large size parks within that driving distance now. I have several very good parks within 4 hours. Only people in the greater Spokane area live a reasonable distance to a good park and everyone else in the North West has at least half a day's drive if they want something in that echelon. And while PNE Playland is in the Northwest, besides checking Coaster off your bucket list it really isn't a very impressive park.
@@zacg_ oh nice! im glad to hear youre living in more of a park hot spot now. a long drive through oregon has been on my mind for a while now hitting up all my favorite spots, and stopping by any of the minor parks i might pass on the way. so theyre part of the trip, and not the destination. its going to be a huge undertaking for my dinky car that doesn't travel farther than LA to SF often, so that info is helpful! even without the major parks, the pacific north west is one of the most beautiful parts of the country. adding any bomb roller coasters would just make it that much better 😩
@@reg1m0nz83 totally agree. I love the Pacific Northwest. It really is a wonderful place to live and it's easily one of the most beautiful places in the USA. It just needs some more parks to really make it a well rounded place. That and it would be nice if there were some better museums outside of Seattle but that's another topic.
I haven't been yet but I already know that I'll love it! I love these small quirky amusement parks in the US, and this one looks no different. It's given me Quassy vibes for sure!
I grew up going to oaks Park, they also offer haunted houses during Halloween and during Christmas they offer rides with Santa 🎅 on the old steam engine. It's great because I have 4 kids and it's affordable with me being the only one working in my family. It's a treat for us anytime we enter the property.
Why does the Pacific Northwest not have any major theme parks? You'd think Portland, Seattle, or Vancouver could support one (I know Vancouver has a park but its pretty dinky and bad coaster selection).
Wow, still there? I went to school in Portland during 2008-2017. I love PDX and everything about this city. Oaks Park is an amazing place. Beautiful, classic, full of history. Good for taking the kids there.
I live in a small town next to Portland. As a coaster enthusiast I absolutely love oaks park and love to go with my friends and ride the 2 main attractions all day. It’s sad that we don’t have any major parks around here but I love the small town charm of Oaks park. If you are visiting the Portland area I definitely recommend going there for an afternoon!
it's funny, i used to go roller skating there in the 80's at the HUGE rink that is STILL open there! We still have a Rock O Plane here in Santa Cruz (The Lost Boys filming location) in California. Richard
If you love to roller skate while listening to soothing live organ music, their are few places in the world that will offer this!!! Go Oaks Park!!!!!😃😃😃
This was my home park growing up. Can verify- it was very rough. Somehow, I miss it a lot though. My friends and I used to strategize how not to get beat up on it lol. (Ride in the front row of the middle car and lean forward. It’ll save your neck.)

The plan is to clear out the picnic areas. Taylor - if you could put in a budget friendly family coaster, that doesn't spin, what would you do?
From my experience, the Rock-O-Plane was more of a traveling fair ride and maybe only Wildwood, NJ boardwalk had a more or less permanent installation, cool memories!
Damn a rock-o-plane or as we used to call them the eggs!! I've not seen one of those in like 20 years! there used to be a fair (uk carnival) where there is a supermarket now when i was in high school and i used to make that ride so intense with being able to lock the carriages and make them spin lol. never seen one of them since!
Bro atmosphere is such a good ride it’s goes all the way around and it leaves you straight upside down and spinning like 100 ft in the air it’s so good
I’m in my 30’s and I went to Oaks Park as a kid several times. Especially in the 90’s. There were Birthdays; field trips; summer visits; ect,. My favorite thing after the roller skating rink was the Haunted Mine (haunted house ride). Unfortunately they removed this ride sometime in the mid 2000’s I believe. Bring it back!
I've been going to oaks park my whole life, It's really popular around the Portland metro area and people get really excited and think it's a big deal to go there. After going to other amusement parks, I have to say I don't care too much for the rides anymore but I still love it for what it is. Also there used to be another roller coaster called looping thunder and they took it out for a journal and peak. Fun fact the very 1st person to ever go on the new roller coaster was my neighborhood convenience store cashier.
This review is 100% accurate. - A Portlander. I do like this place. But if it didn't happen Adrenaline Peak I would come here less often. As it is, I did make it out to Oaks Park twice this summer and once last summer. As an Oregonian, glad its here, glad we have one good coaster in Oregon, but Enchanted Forest is the more special Theme Park in OR.
Look up videos/information about the Wurlitzer pipe organ in the rollerskating rink, it's an amazing piece of engineering and one of only a few still in existence. The semi-truck sized pipeworks hang on a suspended platform above center of the rink. It's truly the main attraction of the park. Do note the schedule on their website though, they only play the organ during certain times/days, otherwise it's DJ'd music. Pretty cool too that for a region with such a dearth rollercoasters that we've now got a Gerstlauer Euro-Fighter in town, although it's a small one it still packs a nice little bite sized punch. REALLY really wish there was a major park somewhere between here and Seattle.
I'm going tomorrow. One park I never thought I'd get to, and I'll ride Addrenaline Peak before Hydrus, would've been unforseeable before November (unless something like what happened to me with Timberhawk at Wild Waves today happens).
Not really much room or area to create a new coaster park in Portland or the attraction to warrant a new coaster park in the area so yeah Oaks Park is what we are stuck with. I'd say that the rides are all decent, a nice mix of family rides and thrill rides with other attractions. It is also a nice place to have picnics like you said but so does the Oregon Zoo and I think the Oregon Zoo is so much better in that regard. Some of my ride picks at the park: Rock & Roll, pretty classic ride where you go both forwards and backward picking up speed and deal with g forces. Rock-O-Plane: Prefect ride to mess with your friend, want to go upside down for the whole ride? You got it. This ride allows you to change your angle of tilt while doing a classic Ferris wheel loop making it really fun. Oaks Park has been updating some of their rides and changing the name/theming of other rides. So it isn't lost to time but it does certainly show its age with its selection of rides.
I live in the PDX area. Oaks is fine for what it is. A small, old school amusement park with a beautiful setting next to the river. Great for 2-3 hours of fun. I doubt a major theme park will ever be built in the Pacific Northwest outside of Silverwood. And that's fine. Most people here would rather hike, bike, ski, or hanging out by the coast than go to a theme park.
We live in Gladstone and I have been yelling and screaming for decades that Portland Oregon needs a real THEME PARK and an outdoor water park. Our summers are warm and beautiful! I actually have a Facebook page on it I created 20 yeArs ago that I never really promoted but had a ton of response. “Portland Oregon needs an outdoor waterpark” I think it’s what I named it.

It's better we have a eurofighter than the pinfari looper that used to be there, and I also got a credit on the now-defunct Lewis and Clark adventure dark ride thing and a credit on the now defunct Screamin' eagle. The roller rink has a humongous organ in the middle and a bunch of humps you can skate on in the back. Overall, love that place.
I have been to Oaks Park once. It's basically like your typical old fashioned carnival style amusement park. They used to have a roller coaster called "the roller coasters", and it was the most painful roller coaster I have ever ridden. It felt like you can break your tailbone at the bottom of the first drop. Also, if your legs aren't super long, you had to jump into the seats on the claw ride. Other than that the park was OK. I think I spent most of my time riding the claw ride.
All time useless roller coaster trivia fact - If you listed all the currently operating roller coasters in the US alphabetically, Oaks is home to both the first (Adrenaline Peak) and 2nd to last (Zoom Coaster) 😜
I just went here yesterday, I actually went on the Adrenaline Peak about 30 times or more! It was my favorite ride, I was looking for a video about the Adrenaline Peak, because I was sitting next to a guy who was recording! So I was trying to see if he put it on UA-cam! And I don't see his video because it would say that the video was made "1 day ago" or some hours ago.
I went to oaks park with my best friend and her family about a year ago I was to scared to ride the adrenaline peak but this summer for my birthday I am going again with my boyfriend and i we are super excited to ride the adrenaline peak
I wish we had a true amusement park here in this area! I live about 5 minutes away from Oaks, and I go down there to do nature walks with my dogs more than to visit the rides. Our only other options, however, are the State Fair and Enchanted Forest
Have you done a review of wild waves?? It’s up I5 a bit from PDX. Just south of Seattle! There is a park with rides connected to it. It’s one of the only other places we have in the PNW. 😭 there was a super shady place next door to enchanted forest back in the day, it’s an RV park now, if anyone else remembers it please reply!! The water slide in the back was soooooo sketchy!
My long distance partner loves amusement parks and travels a lot so it sucks that they'll visit Oregon after having gone to places like six flags and universal studios just to only really have oaks, which I warned them is a little lame compared to stuff like that. But what can I complain I'm from Cali so I'm coming from disney land and sea world haha Oregon has its charm
Considering the size of the Portland and Seattle metro areas its strange that there are no major parks in the area. I can't think of another part of the country that is so lacking.
Well there isn't very many other "tourist" attractions in the PNW. The local population is also a bit sketchy(homeless people). Those factors could making supporting a bigger coaster park pretty difficult to achieve.
Why are there so few amusement/theme parks in the Pacific Northwest? I mean for such a big urban area (Vancouver, Seattle, Portland) you’d expect there to be a lot more big parks.
I grew up going to this place. So happy to see it still around
Same i grew up in portland too
I’m from Portland and we definitely need a chain park up here! It’s getting expensive being a Coaster Enthusiast here 😂

Would love Barry’s in Portrush to get one of those Rollercoasters to replace the Big Dipper
Idk if you've been up to Vancouver's Playland but their wooden coaster "coaster" has some of the most batshit crazy airtime with only buzz bars.
I wish we had a true amusement park here in this area! I live about 5 minutes away from Oaks, and I go down there to do nature walks with my dogs more than to visit the rides. Our only other options, however, are the State Fair and Enchanted Forest
I know south florida is close to orlando but we really need a theme park in south florida.
Yes, it’s already available to watch on our channel!
@@CoasterStudiosthank you! I binged all your PNW videos at 3 am last night 😂 love this channel!
My long distance partner loves amusement parks and travels a lot so it sucks that they'll visit Oregon after having gone to places like six flags and universal studios just to only really have oaks, which I warned them is a little lame compared to stuff like that. But what can I complain I'm from Cali so I'm coming from disney land and sea world haha
Oregon has its charm
-Expired and I love it I like the roller coasters
You did a Hydrus review so does that mean no Adrenaline Peak review?
correct
Considering the size of the Portland and Seattle metro areas its strange that there are no major parks in the area. I can't think of another part of the country that is so lacking.
I imagine all the rain would be expensive to deal with from a maintenance POV
@@methyod It rains quite abit in the Southeast as well though, especially Florida.
Well there isn't very many other "tourist" attractions in the PNW. The local population is also a bit sketchy(homeless people). Those factors could making supporting a bigger coaster park pretty difficult to achieve.
How is it compared to say, Bay Beech?
smaller, attractions are grouped closer together, and more expensive (which isn't saying much cause Bay Beach is so cheap)
Why are there so few amusement/theme parks in the Pacific Northwest? I mean for such a big urban area (Vancouver, Seattle, Portland) you’d expect there to be a lot more big parks.
It’s because of our climate our operating season deters potential investors with our rain and snowfall as well as our not very warm summers
Theres a Rock O Plane at Lakeside Amusement Park in Colorado
Cool place I never been there before but I kinda dig it and the food looks really good 👍 and I been to other parks before but not this one.
I am from portland and Adrenalin peak is good . But when I went to l.a. and hang time is way better.
Really weird seeing my park on this channel lol

Imagine if they demolish the area inside the train tracks and put a raptor in its place
I need a raptor at my home park
