- Coronavirus has instilled the first-ever digital Haute Couture week, and luxury brands like Chanel, Dior, Guo Pei, Iris Van Herpen, Balmain, Viktor & Rolf, Schiaparelli and more have participated! While there is no way to understand the true craft of Haute Couture from a virtual perspective, it doesn't mean we aren't gonna try and that some brands didn't do their darndest to raise themselves to the task. Overall, there were some pretty strong collections and some great pieces from brands you wouldn't expect!

"Does it look nice? Yeah maybe for those with the most scary of the Corona symptoms. A lack of Taste".
Damn, that read was savage.
That's the best read ever
I'm alone watching this at 4 am and it made me go "oooo we're sasssyyyy todayyyy" aloud to my deaf dog
Dior honestly had some beautiful looks, the bad ones were absolutely horrifying but the one's that were great I loved!
Same, but most great about them is how timeless they are
Thank you for recognizing my Culture. Greek women still wear this type of dresses mostly in summer during weddings and Orthodox baptisms. I found his comments very rude.
Agreed, honestly I don’t think the incredible promo video that they done for their collection should be discredited because it simply lacks diversity. I fell in love with it, the mood of it, the landscapes, it was all very stunning!
she is missing a story/narrative that intertwine great dresses with the bad ones so we feel invested
TheSpaceCollector Incredible video but 0 diversity. At a time where race is at the forefront, I am surprised that they were not more careful with this.
IVH proving she can sell you a whole story, a house and the kitchen sink with one impeccably made and thought out dress.
❤️
the boldness of saying here is my new collection, and it is just one single dress
It was stunning. Truly the only look that absolutely wowed me
IVH fanclub is thriving as always, bc our goddess is serving

And MGC always being a mess.

like!! we know maria grazia CAN make some really really gorgeous pieces (in my opinion, at least) but for every really nice piece she makes, theres, like, 10 vile repulsive ones
I totally agree
Maybe that's nature's way of balancing out the anomaly of a gorgeous Maria Grazia dress?
If she weren't able to, she would have been contracted for Dior nor Valentino, but at this point I wonder if they realized how Valentino went up after she left and Dior keeps sinking thanks to her.
imagine having an haute couture line inspired by Africa with no black models.......
go cry.
Nausithoe eat shit.
Maria Troya that was not the point of her comment lmao if we knew none of the models were Greek we’d be mad aswell so learn to read the room or stfu.
Everything just has to be about race.
Ooooof the white fragility is real in this comment thread

Seeing those sketches was the first time I understood the point of creating not-at-all-wearable pieces.
Yep! As an artist myself, there's a weird sort of disconnect between the artist's concept and representation, and the real thing. In fact, i bet there are tons of looks that, on paper, looked absolutely gorgeous and stunning, but once made in real life, looked like.... well..... kinda awful. I wonder if those pieces theyve kept just because it would be too expensive and too much of a waste to get rid of them or scrap the idea altogether...
was the extremely distracting tuft of hair sticking out from the hat intentional? is this fashion? i'm entranced either way.

About Dior: actually the idea wasn’t inspired by Greek mithology... the video was made by Garrone, a famous Italian film director. If you see his work, everything is inspired by medieval fairytales, where aesthetics and costumes are crucial. So, the video is mostly inspired by modern European art (ex Pre-Raphaelite). Not a fan of Dior but this collaboration was really cool, and you can perceive Garrone’s presence everywhere!
Nymphs and satyrs are Greek♥️
So you know nothing about Greek mythology, is what you're saying. Because every single character in the video, is from Greek mythology. Every. Single. One. Having a Pre-Rapelite style of showing those characters, as Garrone does here, does not mean the characters are not from Greek myths. It's a very cool video, I agree. But even if Garrone himself said what you claim, I would tell him the same thing I've written to you.
Ac Cc my point is that the universe of Garrone is much more complex than that and it referenced mainly European fairytales. They are obviously based on Greek mithology partially but you have also to remember that they are also filtered by the medieval culture, and then the reinassence one. He also references the Pre-Raphaelite that reference the renaissance. I’m just saying that his work is complex and it’s not about portraying the Greek mithology. One of his movies is called the Tales of tales and it’s based on a 17th century Italian novel. So, this specific reference wasn’t made by Luke, who maybe didn’t made enough research, and in this way you loose the concept of the video and it’s beauty.
Btw, this collaboration with Garrone was well accepted here in Italy because it’s easy to get the reference and everyone knows Garrone, maybe in the USA it’s harder because they don’t know him.
Alessandra Tulisso they could have at least gotten a black or asian model to play a mermaid or snail. If it was meant to be an accurate depiction of history or mythology then they wouldn’t be wearing haute couture. A brand that says it stands for feminism, equality or whatever can not use historical context as an excuse.
I noticed!! I thought the aesthetic was super cool and pretty
"then she's serving me crumb catcher neckline from say yes to the dress and I am politely declining" oh god😂😂
those ropes around the dress are trying to be 90's versace on a budget

The miniature clothing might be a nod to the miniature dolls that were used for the post world war II fashion show. Articles of interest episode 7 goes into it.
ua-cam.com/video/hNO1Sba162M/v-deo.html
I don't know if it was intentional or not, but the "dollhouse" idea from the Dior showcase reminded me of the 1945-6 doll fashion show, "Theatre de la Mode," that Christian Dior himself participated in. They used dolls due to post-war fabric shortage. I think it's interesting they did it again here, as it reminds how adversary can prompt (if sometimes dubious) creativity. Great video, as always!
I juts love watching Luke drag Maria Grazia. So relaxing

I didn’t think I would ever like a Dior look but that feather look was actually really beautiful...

Question on the Dior feather dress: could high quality faux feathers be manufactured for a real dress? Is it still couture if there’s faux materials?
following! Would love to know as well, as the slaughtering of animals for fashion doesn't sit well with me but that is a lovely dress.

Well a boggart can turn into a dementor ....
The clip was of a dementor cause that was what came out of the boggart chest for Harry.
🤣😂🤣😂
No one knows what a boggart looks like in its natural state; you only see it when it has transformed into a witch/wizard's worst fear. The clip Luke chose was a boggart taking on Harry's fear of a dementor.

ua-cam.com/video/hNO1Sba162M/v-deo.html
Stop blaming it on China, Luke explained on the video, because of the lockdown they weren't able to hire black models, since there are very few black models in China there weren't any to work without having to take a flight.
Bobbie Productions I don’t think you know much about the social nuances of China and the experiences of black and mixed race people there. There is a diaspora of African people in China, particularly from West Africa, and it would have been possible to hire a black model. The label just didn’t try hard enough.
Hi Luke! I just wanted to point out that the art on the white Dior coat you talked about at 11:04 seems to be an "interpretation" of a style of indigenous art, specifically certain Ojibwe paintings I've seen. Since Maria Grazia is not indigenous, Dior using this art style on their coats is problematic in an entirely different way....
It's not "garbage art". to many it's beautiful and significant.
Omg i didnt know this:( dior really be not knowing how to respect anyone
i think it is garbage in the way that she uses that art, just pasting it on an unrelated coat in an unrelated collection, seems lazy and uninspired to me
that heart coat says "LESBIAN RIGHTS!!!"
“The most scary of the coronavirus symptoms, a lack of taste” I HAVE BEEN SENT ⚰️⚰️⚰️
Viktor & Rolf's was my favorite collection, it was imaginative and had some really playful pieces, although I agree we could definitely do without the emoji dress. The Transmotion dress though.. *gasp* stunning! Love the commentary Luke, you make excellent and well-explained points.

IVH never disappoints and is what always keeps me sane
You mention that we're seeing the haute couture move online for the first time . Additionally, the high end fashion industry is frequently accused of being elitist and out of touch.
Do you anticipate that the changes made due to covid will snowball into other changes that allow high end fashion to be more accessible to everyday folk?
I wondered this as well!! We will have to see !
Loved it, glad you’re still bringing it!

Dior why is everyone white??? Where's the flavor??
I think they tried to go full Ancient Greece and just assumed everyone was blonde and blue eyed. Big yikes
@Edanna Poudrier No, everyone is angry because there's no diversity and it's 20-fucking-20, they are not angry just because people are talking about the lack of diversity lmfao, what? People of all races, body types, gender identities etc, need and are interested in fashion/clothing, which means they're ignoring a gigantic chunk of their potential customers. Talking about it doesn't make it the center of attention, it's literally what fashion business is about. You want to sell to anybody possible and they're neglecting to acknowledge a major chunk of their audience, which is both terrible business, and downright stupid.
Rosauno Lalintino SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK👏🏾👏🏾🗣🗣
@Edanna Poudrier Something tells me your white and therefore have never had to experience feeling like you don't fit the beauty standard which is inherently eurocentric (white) and excludes and ridicules prominent black features e.g. big noses, coiled, kinky hair and dark brown/black skin. They also exclude and mock East Asian features e.g. monolids, flat nose bridge and wide/flat cheekbones.
To be historically accurate, At the height of the Macedonian empire (Alexander the Great, 323 BC) would have encompassed Egypt and parts of Ethiopia (North Africans and East Africans) to the former Persian Empire (Arabs) and towards modern-day Pakistan and parts of Northern India (South Asians).
@@christinanguyen1230 sis really said E D U C A T I O N and that's on period.
Have to say the Guo Pei looks with the elephant heads floored me, I'm in love! And thank you for commenting on her almost exclusive use of white models. They've been doing it for ages and it's baffling to me why they're hired when she's based in China and there are so many talented and gorgeous Chinese models they could cast. And this collection being inspired by African wildlife is beautiful but the casting of a white model just further drives home how everything about Africa in terms of nature and fashion is praised and adored but the people get no credit or love. I hope that her and her team see the backlash and harm this causes and make an effort to cast models of other races.

Luke's content is what we need and not some drama! I am so glad to see luxury brands taking a different approach and IVH serving us look after looks
You are serving us some good content, I didn't even realise that was a 40 min video. Interesting and thought-through, keep it up!
I always lov your fearless commentary Luke, but I have to rectify, about the - albeit questionable - Dior ;
The clothes were also made for real size mannequins, not only for the dolls. So they are purposed to be eventually fitted to and worn by actual human bodies ! (you can see it in a video a french youtuber did with vogue where she visits the dior atelier) Also, as some other comments have said, the miniatures are how the fashion industry dealt with post WWII, and I think a quite ingenious thing to mirror for our current covid restrictions.
PS : While we love your sassy, (probably more "successful" -- as in appealing to a larger audience, which : yesss get that monay!) videos, I think a lot of your viewers would be interested in digging deeper in certain sociological-artistic points you make - I understand you take your channel in the direction you want, and make it successfuuul - but like, just saying, I don't have 1/100th of your knowledge and I want to know why Maria Grazia Chiuri's aspirations to feminism and multi-culturalism/appropriation (like her show "celebrating" artisans in Morrocco) are poorly executed? (also to be honest the reason im so invested is that i've seen my fav feminist writer, who is Nigerian, in pictures and bein all friendly with her) But yeah we're interested!
thanks for keepin us intellectually titillated xx cheers

I actually liked the Dior dress that he said was his own personal boggart lmao oops
I study Ancient Greece (I have a masters degree) and honestly that dior video is one of the worst and laziest pieces of classical reception I’ve seen
I don't study it (just a huge history nerd): I don't even need a degree or college level education to notice that. The fact that with all the people working for her and all the financing she still this that, shows it was on purpose.
I feel that, I am a graduate from the school of the Art Institute of Chicago and seeing that Dior video made me want to die
Actually the inspiration isn’t Greek mithology but medieval fairytales. The director of the video is an important Italian film director, Garrone. I’m disappointed Luke didn’t make some research about this; because for me as an Italian this collaboration is amazing and I’m proud of Garrone
@fe421286 '' I tHiNk iT'S a wAstE oF TiMe oF yoUr sMaLl AmERiCan bRAiNs tO sTuDY iTalY oR gReK oR clAsiCS '' That was so rude and xenophobic so please, be less toxic the next time. Because she/he didn't say that because of lack of preparation, but because she had bad information reported in the video.
fe421286 No need to be rude. Some of the elements originally stem from antiquity, although the video references their medieval reinterpretation, so it’s easy to get confused and lots of people in this comment section (including our fellow Europeans) have made the same mistake.
thank you. not that interested in fashion, but just love your commentary and keep coming back for you.
Great video as always !! Thank you so much !

I'm not fan of Chiuri's work at Dior usually. And while I agree that the video was, if not racist, incredibly dumb-headed in the context of the year we're living in (doing a video of supernatural creatures that still all have to be white? Really?) , the idea was interesting. And the doll-size clothes were exactly how haute couture used to send models of their creations to far-flung clients around the world, going back to the 18th century. This is fashion history. If you're going to comment and critique, you have to know what you're talking about and not just assume, out of your prejudice towards Chiuri at Dior, that it's size-ist. If you had looked up the b.t.s. video regarding the collection, you would have heard the petits mains talking about how Chiuri had them make full size versions of the clothes THEN re-create them to 1/3 rd size for the doll mannequins. As for Viktor and Rolf, the long sleeves on the full skirted outfits were a direct reference to 19th century déshabillé dresses crossed with men's smoking jackets of the same periodor, with the spiky coat, women's outdoor wear of that period. The whole point of the collection was about being at home during the pandemic with no reason to dress for the outside unless you were forced to go out, then you put on that spiked coat. The voice-over even made some of what I'm writing plain and required no fashion history knowledge. It's not enough to be able to critique. You have to know enough to critique effectively and transfer knowledge. You do a lot of the time. But when you get it wrong or don't do your homework, it really shows and it undermines your authority.
I don't think it was racist. remember how long Eu was on lockdown this year. Eu don't have as many black or Asian model who permanently staying in EU, and during lockdown, they can't send a plane to ship model only to have a few more diverse photo. It would be putting the lives of others at risk, so priorities.
