But how do you place a mandala inside of a plain design
It's amazing just how much you can do in Design Space (though I haven't subscribed so there's not a whole lot of the really cool images). I wish Cricut let you save it as an SVG so you can share with others. Your tutorial though has helped me with an idea I have! :)

When I select the black rectangles and the L (using Shift) I have them all selected but my "slice" option is greyed out and not available. What am I doing wrong??
You can only select one item at a time and the main piece you are slicing out of. Slice one and then do the next one.
There are a lot of options that you're using that my design space doesn't have.
hmmm. I'm not sure why? what are you using? a laptop, phone, ipad?
