Prior to this interview, I held immense respect for this psychiatrist . As a psychologist with a background in science, having completed my undergraduate and postgraduate studies at a renowned central university in India, I find it inappropriate that he would suggest that only humanities people are qualified to provide counseling. His statements against humanities people are also inappropriate. While I acknowledge the vital role psychiatrists play in diagnosis and treatment, it's essential to recognize the value of psychologists in counseling. Counseling is not solely about giving advice; it involves administering therapies for various disorders, ranging from anxiety to borderline personality disorder. Therapies such as CBT and DBT have been effective in managing anxiety-related issues and borderline personality disorder. While pharmacotherapy is essential for treating several illnesses, mental health is not a one-person effort. As such, I hope Dhanya can provide a platform that encourages more mental health professionals to share their perspectives and enlighten society.

Having heard the doctor and read the note of the psychologist , I find no reason for the later to feel aggrieved. It is obvious that doctor is referring to a problem which pervasive in the state of Kerala.
Just because one individual has excellent credentials in the field of psychology , the problem cannot be wished away. There is certainly lack of awareness and to top it there is this problem many Keralites suffer from that is, he / she knows it all.

Though he is trying to promote Psychiatry, he has indirectly promoted and provoked Psychology. The counseling professionals are not studying medicine but we are intensely trained with elaborate tools to assess minds. We are taught where to draw the line between counseling and referring a client for Medical intervention. Sad to say that this doctor is updated with Neuro but has not seen how equipped is psychology.
Completely agree with Jayaram but at the same time, validate @health_psychologist said.

CBT , DBT is not going to treat bipolar disorder, mania or any thing like that . Psychology is just homeo or Ayurvedam - placebo medicine

Main issue in India is thr is no team work between Psychiatrist, psychologists and medical Social Workers/counselors. Each of them have crucial role in improving the well being of a patient. Psychiatrist have some fixed roles Psychologist have fixed roles and so does counselors.. But their ego's won't let them work as a team. Being a mental health professional and a patient I can say very well that majority of them don't value each other. How many psychiatrist can do therapy? Or counseling? From my personal and professional experience I have seen very very very few, maybe one or two psychiatrist who think of something other than medicines. They just prescribe medicines they won't even tell them the side effects and possible changes which may happen due to medications. Also they won't even take proper history. Just meeting few symptoms from DSM is not sufficient to diagnose. Some times the reason behind those symptoms also have significance role in diagnosis. Most of the Psychiatrist I have seen are always in a rush to finish it off and call other patient. Same applies for psychologists. Most of them won't get into social and emotional aspects of patients problem. They just diagnose and start therapy they won't think outside of textbook. Also in counseling most of the counseling ends as just advice giving. Or offering solutions.. A proper treatment for Mental health issues are
    1. Taking proper detailed history.
    2. Prescribing Medicines as per diagnosis to influence brain functions
    3. Detailed counselling and appropriate therapy to understand the root causes and help and guide the patients to come up with a solution.
If these should happen all these professionals should work together. I have seen some Psychiatric departments work like these as a team and make tremendous change in patients..
Let's keep aside everyone's ego first.

Thanks for the video, great content. But I have to disagree with some points said. It is not just humanities students who go for psychology degree but science students as well. I agree psychology is not the solution for many cases. But so is psychiatry. It's a collaborative effort where counselor, clinical psychologist and psychiatrist work together for the mental well being of people. I couldn't grasp if dr's viewpoint came from his distress that people ignore psychiatry due to stigma & pharmacophobia and go for a psychologist instead, or from a belief which underestimates the significance of other mental health professionals.
Mental Health cannot be achieved by one man army called" psychiatrist". It is always, & always a team effort and should be able to appreciate that as well.❤

True. Healing is a combination effect ❤
      1. Psychiatrist - neuro side knowledge + medicine prescription
      2. Clinical Psychologist - therapy
      3. Patient - willingness to unlearn, relearn and heal.
      4. Support system - understanding people with no blame, but full support.
If these 4 combinations are put together only, any therapy or medication will work.

It's called Generational Trauma. For example, നമ്മുടെ grandparent generation class discrimination, war, ഒക്കെ face ചെയ്തവർ ആണ്. ❤
Trauma changes the brain. So does healing ❤️🙌

@@philipjohnifyok thank you. ❤ I'll read about Epigenetics in detail.
But yeah. It's just one part. That's not how the video's caption is also written. That's why I thought of mentioning about other kinds of ways through which mental health issues happen within families. My father had all traits of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (Cluster B) and growing up with him lead to me having Cluster C personality disorders (Dependent, Anxious Avoidant and OCPD). These weren't transmitted via genes. Also most of the unhealthy parenting styles which are considered as healthy by our society/community etc are also leading to personality disorders. So I disagree with saying "എല്ലാ കാര്യങ്ങളും പാരമ്പര്യതയാണ്". @dhanyavarma That's all :)

    For the kind information:-
I am a psychologist who working in a Psychiatric hospital in India. I have been working since last 2 years in this field.
As some one who studied till my graduation in kerala and postgraduation in Karnataka i would like to share something.
I have scored almost full marks in my 10th boards and 85% in my 12th with science background.
Even though everyone else wanted me to take MBBS , i choosed psychology.
To give a brief about the syllabus for Bsc psychology it included physiology in all the six semesters after that for my MSc Psychology in continued for next 4 semesters.
So i just want to tell ,it's not like psychologists have no idea about the biological part of humanbody.
So people who are confused about his statement please understand there are n number of psychologists who comes from humanities, science, commerce background and still studied the physiology and practicing.

Thank you so much Dhanya for this interview. Such open conversations regarding mental health from a professional needs to be shared widely. Yes. I lived so many years without knowing I'm traumatized. Then when i turned 30, i got diagnosed with an autoimmune disease called Graves disease. Then also i knew nothing about trauma and mental health issues which comes because of it. Then when i was 31, I got diagnosed with Complex-PTSD and Cluster C personality disorder. And finally taking therapies namely Cognitive Processing Therapy, Schema Therapy and Cognitive Behavioural therapy for it and my life is changing upside down. Everything makes so much sense finally. On medication too. So my thoughts & emotions are much better under regulation, and so behaviour is improving. ❤️I wish everyone gets to this level basic awareness of self and others ❤️

2 days i skipped my medicines, my emotions and health shows it🥺.. I got Emotionaly vulnerable and tired. I am really afraid of stop medication and also confused about overcome depression without medicine.
One thing medication is the only reason why i am alive today.i am grateful. But otherside i am worrying because i am on medication... Without this i am nothing
If anyone suffering with severe mental health issue consult psychiatric and do the needful. It will help you.but don't completely depending on medicine... Do things which makes you heal

please don't skip medicine. Once your system is stabilized, a psychiatrist can slowly reduce the dose and supplement with cognitive therapy and one day you will be able to be free of medication. Sudden stop is not good. please take care.

Hey dear. I'm also someone who's on medication. So a few months ago suddenly I fell ill and was admitted to ICU for some other health issues and during those days, my C-PTSD related medication was stopped, unplanned. Then when I communicated about it, the hospital people restarted it with lower dose. You also might need such a method. No need to panic. Any medicine need to be taken as a "course" actually. My doctor said it's totally ok if we accidentally miss. But when we continue, we need to remember to take half dose first, then continue to the prescribed dose. Then our body will be able to manage the shift. Take care.

This is an issue with many fields in India where doctors do not encourage allied fields such as Physiotherapy Occupational therapy, Speech Language therapy, Psychology etc.. All extensive science based professional courses btw. Learning Disability for example can be beautifully managed with help of professional psychologist, special educator and speech language therapist. But no paediatrician will give a proper referral. Post stroke patients benefit from professional swallowing therapy and speech language therapy but no neurologist will refer. They look at all allied health professionals as the enemy and this is why health system in Kerala has a long way to go.

Kudos to the team for bringing up topics like these...which needs to be discussed.I do have a difference of opinion with Dr.philip
Iam a psychologist who works with children diagnosed with childhood disorders.from a psychologist perspective, We dont see psychiatrist as alien from space.we look up to the psychiatrist to look into the biological aspects of brain, the psychiatrist is the right person to refer to a psychologist for counselling. As cited example of dyslexia,Dr. Is right counselling maynot be the right modality of treatment instead there is behavior therapy and Special education which should help the child learn through different suportive techniques.
Watching this video somewhere portatryed the speakers bias, Yes difference of opinion exist, but im hoping you will bring in more mental health profesional and help de-mystify alot of myths.

In India , Psychiatrists do have so much of ego towards Psychologists.
And this Psychiatrist is a representative of such.
I dont understand how can he judge this subject called Psychology without even studying about it.
He studied MBBS (5 years)+ MD in Psychiatry (3 years) and judging the Psychologists who studied 5 to 7 years of Psychology.
One thing is very clear that he don't have much knowledge about Psychology. With this 45 years of experience he defined,
" Psychology is just a study of mind".
    ABSOLUTELY WRONG🚫
"Psychology is the scientific study of human behavior and mental/cognitive process".
Nobody claimed that counseling can solve all problems. Psychologists do counseling/ Psychotherapy and Assessments. For the cases which need medicine support we do definitely refer to psychiatrists.
But the majority of psychiatrists especially the older generation like him do not refer to psychologists even for mild issues, not all.
Which shows the level of "ego" of Psychiatrists. And this is the reason why Indians still having poor mental health overall.
Mental health professionals should be a team with cooperation, not egoistic like this Psychiatrist. 😊

It's really disappointing that being a psychologist u don't know that psychological studies are also a part of psychiatry PG course and MBBS.Drugs play a vital role in mental illness .CBT and all are just a part of those treatment regimens. There is a common notion among people that mental illness can only be cured by a psychologist which is a dangerous belief that may even affect the prognosis. They could definitely do a supportive role but can't cure the illness.Counselling is not treatment!
      .Doctor just clarifies this misconception.

So what you trying to say is that the problem that the doctor referred to doesn’t exist in Kerala ? What scientific study are you basing ,for arriving at the conclusion that poor mental health of Indians result from “ego” of the psychiatrist ? On one hand you proclaim that what you studied is scientific but your sweeping conclusions have hardly anything scientific!

Most of the psychologists are just listening. They won't even allow the partner of the patient to talk. Few psychologists take data solely from the patient, not talking to the patient's friends or relatives even if the patient wanted it.
