Love the Unimog and loves those gorgeous dogs and even more I like how the lady knows how to pronounce route correctly , unusual for an American.
You need to put brush bars over your habitat that would solve all the tree issues
For a truck that size a battery pole saw/pruning saw would be a very worth while investment. A battery chain saw has saved me quite a few times in my 4x4 but it doesn't have the reach you need for your beast.
We have a little Makita battery powered chainsaw that helps a lot! In this situation it would’ve been most of the tree needing to be cut down and we don’t want to have that much impact on the trail. A little less and it would’ve been no problem!
Flextape. Truly stops all leaks that duct tape cannot. Worth carrying. Does not break down with heat either. Xxoo

I would suggest that you buy a few replacement hoses in the diameters used in the Mog. This is not expensive, but important if you are far away from workshops. The hoses are brittle after decades. Also think about the hoses on the engine, e.g. cooling water, or cooling belt, etc.These are now small things that can fail, as is the case with old vehicles...it is technology after all, and technology can break. But it can also be repaired, as you know and did. Don't let it spoil your fun, you know that you don't have a perfect and old vehicle that now needs to be made fit again. It would only be bad if you had an engine, gearbox or chassis damage. I think, this trip was not a disaster for you. It was a bit strenuous, with small interruptions. That's the adventure of traveling, things happen that are not planned. So what... Have a good trip, and a few oily fingers shouldn't stop you.
It's always the hoses you didn't know existed that will fail, and they're always the most hidden. Also, might be a good idea to think about changing all the fluids early. This is probably the longest single trip that thing has ever been driven and all the sludges have probably been knocked loose by now.
I swear we never even noticed that hose until it started acting up 😅 you’re right, that’s how it always goes! Good suggestion! We’re planning a full fluid change and maintenance session for the mog very soon!

Anytime an air line that is rubber or a rubber fluid line, head to a Hydraulic Hose shop. They can make one in a few minutes. NAPA also in some locations can make them.
Diesels should never be shut down immediately when you stop, let it idle for 2-5 mins before you kill it. It always everything cool down and pressure down.
On another note, Arizona is very strict on 6” off the road Mudflap Laws. Heavy fines, get them on, (just my 2¢.)

I loved this episode, I grew up in Wickenburg AZ, right where you were. I took that Senator trail many times to Crown King, and the back way up Mingus mountain to Prescott (thank you for saying it right, like biscuit). This is the desert I roamed as a kid, on my horse and in jeeps. So beautiful. Sometimes, you have to use the wash beds to get around obstacles. Enjoying your adventures

Wow! This is so far my favorite video. That Unimog is so tall, like an 18-wheeler truck climbing and crawling the mountain ⛰️. I will have a panic attack driving that big monster with sweaty hands with a tight knot in my stomach. I laughed when you walked toward to the driver door to pat on the MOG's rear end. Your MOG will be great once you replace the hoses. I would have a backup hose for emergency such as hose clamp and so on. That thing is a moose 🫎 or a beast! Love it!

Nothing worse then being off road (over landing) and then a Honda pilot shows up next to you. I hated that in my trips and yet somehow due to the weigh of my truck I would be the first one stuck too despite having the best brand new tires. 😅
First part of the road was in really good condition! Luckily we didn’t make it too far before we had the air leak. Definitely wouldn’t take that Pilot much further down that road though or there could be some issues 😅

Seriously guys, that was not a disastrous trip. You were however, a little underprepared (no offence intended). I've done a lot of serious 4WDing over the last 40 years in Australia. Part of traveling is knowing what spares and tools to carry. Some things should be standard for any off road vehicle. Plus the older the vehicle and the more extreme the terrain, the more extensive and expensive that list becomes. Below is my spares list for my 4WD, soon to become an ex-ADF Unimog U1700L with a DIY removable and extendable camper on the back.
To start with, a good toolkit with any specialised tools required for your vehicle.
A collection of all belts.
A collection of all Hoses (Engine, Chassis and Camper) with appropriate tools as needed)
Oils (Diff, Gearbox, Engine) and mog specific, Portals. Add a hand oil pump to transfer oil into diffs / portals etc.
Oil Filters for all the above plus all Air filters
Mog Specific - Air pressure relief / water drain valves for air pressure storage tanks for brakes and gear actuators. Get at least 2. They fail often.
Tire Irons, Large wheel nut spider with extension pole, Panel puller, Electric Air Pump.
Spare seals for all common seals like Air, brake fluid etc
At least 2 sets of wheel bearings and a heavy duty puller to remove the old or some appropriate sized bit of pipe to remove/replace the bearing shells.
Spare engine water pump and thermostat
Sealants and Adhesives - Gasket Goo, liquid metal, RTV etc
I've never carried this but I have seen it done. Assortment of metal bars, arc welding sticks to be able to tack together emergency trackside repairs. Maybe some kind of very small welder?
Complete Starter motor. If you keep an eye out you may be able to get one at a reasonable price, but new they are expensive
Complete Alternator (or Generator if not converted)
Communications: Old style Sat phone (cheap but will still do the job from just about anywhere) through to Starlink RV
Tire Plug Kit
Tie Rod Ends
Spare electrical wire, Fencing wire, Rags, Cable Ties, ratchet straps, A good size appropriate jack with a large base (for soft ground).
Think I got everything. Probably not. This was based on an old list of mine.
Don't take the mileage or Kilometers traveled, or speed as accurate. At least in Australia, the head unit has probably been replaced at least twice while the army had it.
Here in Australia, most people replace the head unit with a GPS unit to get accuracy with mileage and speed. Some will also do the clever functions like MPG, L/100Km, Averages etc.
Admitady this is a pretty comprehensive list and if you KNOW something has just been changed recently, then you may be able to skip that. But better to be safe than sorry.
Addendum: ADF = Australian Defence Force. So ex-ADF = used to be Australian Defence Force equipment (ie U1700L).
Advantages of Ex-ADF Unimog - None other than its already in Australia and they are going cheap.
The ADF is auctioning them off (same as in America) and the Australian army is replacing them with (among other things) the Merceries Actros (kinda the same as Unimog but no portals).
Advantage of older Mogs (80's). All manual leavers (some air operated). No ECU or electrical sensors to die after years of muddy water crossings, etc.
Once the Engine is running, it does not require any power (24V) to be drivable, just air pressure (driven from a mechanical air pump on the engine). Meaning no getting stuck because some minor or major electrical part just died leaving you stranded in the bush or the wrong side of a tidal flat or whatever. Modern Unimogs and Actros are great to drive, have features galore, are quiet, more powerful, comply with current EU emissions v6 etc, but I cant stand the idea of eventually some $2 part is going to leave you stranded with an error code that requires a proprietary connector or sensor that's buried under an impenetrable series of layers of fancy crap. Plus a Unimog is not exactly price competitive new.
Sorry, going off on a tangent here, but should be good information for others thinking of building up a mog or any Expedition type vehicle.
Is that hose not the supply for the valve which supplies air to the cylinder which switches lower / higher group on the gearbox ? If you have air coming out of this valve it is well worth checking the group selector cylinder, because these love to leak internally, and then it can happen that you think its the valve but its the group selector cylinder. Ask me how I know.
If your car totally broke down in the middle of nowhere, how would you get rescued? Does AAA come out that far?
You should check out #TrailMater from Moab, Utah. He is the best at off-road recovery and he is very good at explaining what you need to know.
