@@visforvino Lighting in a bottle! It was a combination of good wine and good marketing with it's unique label. I think since Costellation brands bought it the quality has dropped nonetheless it has a unique place in Zinfandel history is you ask me.
WSET loves white Zinfandel. You also have to take into account that Zinfandel ripens unevenly so you can get jammy fruit and nice fresh fruit at the same time.
What are some of the very best examples of Zinfandel? and old vine Zinfandel? For us big cab drinkers, wanting to see some truly great stuff - thoughts?
As a Zinfindel grower, I can say the honest reason Zinfindel is used for Rose's is the uneven ripening. Harvesting a red from Zinfindel is difficult to make high quality.
Ok, all of these claims about the differences of red wines are often exaggerated. The differences are there but they are not significant enough. I tried red Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon side by side. Somewhat different intensity of smell but in the end the taste is almost identical.
Depends on where it’s from. If they’re both from new world, warm climate, yes, they’ll be similar. But Bordeaux Cabernet (old world cool climate) vs new world Zinfandel would be wildly different. Also, Cabernet and Zinfandel are both dark fruits and full body and oaked. If you compared Zinfandel to Pinot Noir (light body, less oak, red fruits) again, wildly different.
Yep. It is indeed a Croatian wine grape. Before grape geneticists cracked the code people thought Zinfandel was an American wine grape. However DNA analysis by UCDavis scientists showed that Zinfandel is actually Plavic Mali under a different name. In any case Zinfandel has really found its home away from home in America.
Thanks for this info, loved it!
Of course!
Don't know about the vine age, but "Gnarly Head"'s Old Vine Zinfandel is one of my favorite wines!
Nice! Their website says 35-80 years!
That's why I'm here
My dad loves them and the Old Ghost Old Vine Zinfandel. Actually he just really loves old vine Zinfandel.
Very cool and informative vid. Zin is our favorite. Especially the zins out of Paso Robles (our favorite wine region)! Keep up the great work. Salud!
G Medina Paso is one of my favorites too!!
You didn’t mentioned that Zinfandel is not a California native grape as some people suggest
It is Croatian Crljenak
How funny. White Zinfandel didnt get me into wine, but regular Zinfandel did. The Prisoner was my gateway wine.
Chris G Nice! I remember when the Prisoner first came out: it was a phenomenon. I’ve never seen a wine catch fire like that!

Inconspicuous zin is my fave
Can’t say I’ve tried it, I’ll have to find it!

Didn't know that actually! Makes sense!
@@visforvino I think I learned that Zinfandel ripens unevenly in WSET 2.
You can't beat a white Zinfandel from California.
who makes a powerful fruit forward Zinfandel with black raspberry like flavors, which is low tannin or fully ripe tannin? looking for strong aromas!
Love the stuff from Turley and Ridge!
What are some of the very best examples of Zinfandel? and old vine Zinfandel? For us big cab drinkers, wanting to see some truly great stuff - thoughts?
Red Zinfandel
Turley’s old vine is great! I also like Ridge!!
I hear Robert Biale Vineyards is good. Never had any Zinfandel from the winery.
Old Ghost old vine Zinfandel has a good price and tastes great with some meatballs.
When you say “vine” I keep thinking you’re saying “wine” funny

Thank you Jean much reed real
I once ordered a bottle of white Zinfandel.
I’m a danger to myself.
Haha I’ve got no beef with white Zin if you enjoy it!
do they also host wine zinfandel sipping sprints that are competitive?
Where did the name Zinfandel originate?
Bramble aka blackberries.
Rick Footson haha yes but bramble also includes raspberry!

Good call! I feel like I remember hearing that before!
