I am a Zin fan. Lodi, CA has some wonderful Zins as does Russian River area. In the Sierra foothills they nice wines. All have different options for the grape. Lucky I’m 20 minutes from Napa
Just purchased Wine Folly: Magnum Edition! I absolutely love it and I highly recommend that everyone get it if you're serious about learning more about wine or if you just love wine in general! Thanks Madeline and congratulations on your James Beard Award!
So I really enjoy your infectious enthusiasm, detailed knowledge and enviable passion for wine. I too enjoy Zin, Primitivo and Nebbiolo selections. Well Done. Thanks.
You are like a friend that I enjoy spending time with. I like learning from you and I have my own vineyard. Very grateful that you are able to help us all enjoy wine
I'm pushing 80 years old and have drank a lot of vino in my life, starting with the home made stuff in a mason jar, courtesy of my grandpa (made from concord grapes).. Zinfandel is the one wine that has found its way to the pinnaicle of my wine preferences. They are big tasting wines and that is what I love about them. There are two kinds of zinfandels: Big old good ones and good ole big ones. When President Richard Nixon penetrated the Iron Curtain between the USA and China by being the first president to ever visit china, he took a case of Zinfandel to give to the Big Guy in China. What else??
Hey Girl! I love Zin with bbq and the peppery notes~ Zin was the first red I fell in love with thanks to you in 2012 back in College! -MacGyver, Simply WINEing!
"Get your date drunk." Ha, ha I love it! Zin for sin! Zinfandel isn't one of my favorite grape varieties - there's an awful lot of really bad Zin out there - but when it is done right, it can be smashing. I've been a fan of Primitivo for 20 years or more, long before it became fashionable. A lot of those Italian wines have a sort of dirty, earthy finish which is quite attractive. Good pizza wine.
Can you share the bottle names/ vintage :) would love to pick those up! And do you have an episode of Filtered VS Unfiltered wine!? Would love to hear what the difference is.
I love your videos!!!! Thank you! You've made my private wine tastings for my guests so much fun and I've learned a ton from these and your books. THANK YOU! 🍷🥂 Cheers, Heidi, owner Tipsy Gypsy mobile bar service and Sommelier in training!
Beautiful Madeline forgot to mention that Peterson Winery also produces 8+ different zinfandels all tasting completely different. Check out there website! Big fan! Best KarenYoung ever! Haha gotta love spell check on wine lingo. 😋😊
I’ve never had an American Zinfandel, but I’ve rarely been disappointed with a Primitivo. Depending on the dish of course, in most cases I would most likely go for a Primitivo when it’s on the menu 😊
Just watched your "Mistakes Older Guys Make Trying to Look Youthful!" Cool deal! Definitely reach out to me, maybe we can do a stylish wine episode for your peeps :)
When does one decide that it's raspberry sauce vs just raspberry? I feel like I am unable to come up with the same vocabulary to associate the flavors. I don't think I would ever say "scorched blackberries" as a descriptor. Never say never, I guess.
Um if it won't age just drink it fools. People like to call me a wine snob because I know like the bare minimum to truly enjoy wine. I mean hot damn if it doesn't age just drink it when you get. Problem solved. Edit: I love Zinfandel its probably my favorite.
One thing I don't like about Primitivo is that they tend to be sweet and have a lot of residual sugar (up to 18g/l). I'm curious if Zinfandel are as sweet or if you can find real dry wines...
I've seen a fair amount of dry Zinfandel and Primitivo wines in my days looking at tech sheets. I'm curious though, which ones have 18 g/L? That's pretty off-dry for this particular wine!
@@winefolly thanks for your quick reply! I think I wasn't precise enough so I try to clear that up : Concerning the appelation 'Primitivo Di Manduria DOC' and 'Primitivo Di Manduria Riserva DOCG' producers are allowed to make wines with a max. amount of 18g/l residual sugar. I'm not sure if there are any wines that really have that much sugar but many are very off dry. Over 10g is easy to find... While I would define 'dry' as max. 4g/l as it is in many other areas of Italy and countries (e.g. France).
Passalacqua in the Dry Creek Valley makes some beautiful Zins....too many are huge oak bombs...like drinking a wine that want to be friends with scotch....
I found the Sessantanni better than the 62 because it is more extreme in that direction. If you want to be elegant, one would better leave Primitivo altogether.
Elderberry wine ruined grape wine for me (as did blackberry wine and blueberry wine), kind of like the way salt water fishing ruined fresh water fishing for me (per the saying 'One man's trophy is another man's bait'). I've been a winemaker since 2005 and I've made all kinds of wines (grape included) and in my opinion Elderberry wine is in a class all by itself (there are dozens of articles on winemaking posted online by gurus who have been making wine for decades who say the same thing). Then Blackberry. Then Blueberry. Then Cherry. Then Pear (the Romans regarded pear wine as their favorite, and there they were in the middle of one of the world's premier grape growing regions). Then apple, fig, tomato, then grape (if you don't believe it, go to some of the winemaker's forums and see how grape wine rates on the preferable wine fruit scale.
Love your work as always! Just to confuse things even more, I read an article suggesting the real origin of the Zinfandel grape is actually Montenegro; from a grape called Kratosija! Evidence suggests that it's been grown there longer than Croatia.
You are adorable, brilliant, and such a joy to watch! My husband and I fell in love exploring Zinfandels in the Lodi area (California). Many Napa wineries purchase Lodi grapes for their wines, which makes me very proud as a native to the Central Valley. Thanks for your expertise and some historical background! We will be trying a Primitivo soon and doing our own taste comparison. 😉
ramesh ramesh a bit of a misnomer here because the brand doesn’t determine the healthiness of a wine. I would recommend you seek out “dry” wines (no sugar). Technically, less sugar = more healthy.
Great Question! While the variety originates there, the majority of plantings of this variety are in Italy and the United States. Also, distribution for Croatian wines in the US and elsewhere is relatively obscure because not many people know they make wines there (low demand).
Madeline Puckette stunning like always. Support from Croatia 🇭🇷♥️🇺🇸

I want to marry this comment. Thank you so much! So glad you like it!!!! 🍷📖
It is a must have for the wine enthusiast! Easy to understand, not snobby and in color!
Red Zins are my fav wine 🍷 thx for the video ❤ happy Valentine’s Day !!
Theses videos are so helpful 😍question Zinfandel low in tannin 😊
So I really enjoy your infectious enthusiasm, detailed knowledge and enviable passion for wine. I too enjoy Zin, Primitivo and Nebbiolo selections. Well Done. Thanks.

Zin is my favorite. Spicy, does well in American oak, and bold.
Wonderful presentation! And, I do love a good Zin!!!

Bravo! Great discussion. I love Zinfandel.
Crushed volcanic rock - wow, havent tried that ;-) Love your stuff Madeline - keep it up!
Adam definitely not something you want to chew! 😂
@@winefolly What does a volcanic rock smell like much less crushed volcanic rock? How would one come across that smell profile?
Very nice, Zin is my all time favorite. I think central coast CA has the best...

And how!
1:34 can you please write the real name of that grape please?
One of the best wines I have tried primitivo 😀 cheap and very good
A. Rafanelli in Dry Creek makes an amazing Zinfandel!! The winemaker is the third generation, her grandmother was the winemaker who started it all!
once again, your goofy and dorky in a real likable way. keep up the good work!
Love this channel. She is great!
We have friends coming over for BBQ ribs tomorrow and I have three different zins to try out with them. My favorite varietal!
martinelli zinfandel giuseppe & luisa is my favorite wine but pricey , do you have an opinion and comparable ones that are similiar? thanks
Can you share the bottle names/ vintage :) would love to pick those up!
And do you have an episode of Filtered VS Unfiltered wine!? Would love to hear what the difference is.
Thanks for the request! noted!

Great insight! Didn't know Zin was actually Croatian!
gotta find one of these.
Just love Sin. Thanks, Mad.
Bring the Primitivo!!!
I had the pleasure to drink Sessentani. Really great wine.
I love your videos!!!! Thank you! You've made my private wine tastings for my guests so much fun and I've learned a ton from these and your books. THANK YOU! 🍷🥂 Cheers, Heidi, owner Tipsy Gypsy mobile bar service and Sommelier in training!
Awesome! Thank you so much for saying so :)
that was very informative!
Probably a very dumb question but could you explain what filtered and unfiltered wine means?
Braid Blanks a process at the winery to remove sediment. We can get into the process for sure!
Beautiful Madeline forgot to mention that Peterson Winery also produces 8+ different zinfandels all tasting completely different. Check out there website! Big fan! Best KarenYoung ever! Haha gotta love spell check on wine lingo. 😋😊

Have you ever had the Caymus Zinfandel? Had it at their winery and purchased a bottle to take home. Big bold fruity with a nice long finish.
Yes I have and its great.
Had a Ridge Lytton springs zin 1992 yesterday. So yes, zin can age
Sipping on a Sonoma Zinfandel right now, best wine I have ever tried, Im a noob though.
Girl!! You crazy!! And I love that about you... :)
I have not yet learned to drink zin.
I just can't seem to develop a taste for it. However, would work if nothing else available.
:)
Tres Sabores in Napa makes a unique and wonderful Zin.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention pepper on the finish of either Zinfandel which I find to be consistently present with this grape.
Can do a comparison with California and Australian Zinfandel?
Carlos Flores wow, I’m racking my brain: have I even had a Aussie Zin?! 🤔 thanks for the input Carlos!
I prefer old vine zinfandels. Clos du Bois makes a very good one.
Love Zin.
Love me some “Black Chicken” !
Are you in Washington? I'd love to collaborate on something.
Just watched your "Mistakes Older Guys Make Trying to Look Youthful!" Cool deal! Definitely reach out to me, maybe we can do a stylish wine episode for your peeps :)
Love that! DM'd you on Instagram :)
Good presentation, I prefer Primitivo.
You sound like you already had some glasses of wine earlier 🤣😂
0:10-0:15 ❤️❤️❤️
I love Zin wines from Paso Robles.
Quick question, Madeline. Can zin be drunk young?
When does one decide that it's raspberry sauce vs just raspberry? I feel like I am unable to come up with the same vocabulary to associate the flavors. I don't think I would ever say "scorched blackberries" as a descriptor. Never say never, I guess.
Raspberry - think a fresh raspberry. Raspberry sauce, think more concentrated!
Pinot is definitely more difficult/costly to grow than Zin. This is common knowledge in the NorCal wine industry.
I love zin that smells like fresh dirt. It's hard to find. Any recommendations?
The Federalist Zinfandel

dry creek in the house!!!

I dont know why but i can smell honey when drinking primitivo
Love Zinfandel, big bold and some spice.
great video, I usually like Old World Wines better but I love the big fruity jammyness of California.
Zin? Oh yes. Amador County and Lodi have great ones.
Zin are ok but give me a bolder full body red any day. good review
Passalacqua in the Dry Creek Valley makes some beautiful Zins....too many are huge oak bombs...like drinking a wine that want to be friends with scotch....
It's like Streetfighter for wines. "ready?.....FIGHT!!".
In my case the Primitivo wins most of the time though, but it's not a 'PERFECT'.
If you live on the East Coast, there's a decent chance your California wine is cooked. If it moved by truck between May and Sept, really good chance.
I found the Sessantanni better than the 62 because it is more extreme in that direction. If you want to be elegant, one would better leave Primitivo altogether.

Superb 👏 "Get your date drunk"😂🤣 🦋 Gracias 🇨🇺 🍮 ☕️
Sinful but is that bad?
I'd love to see you put together a list of great zinfandel's that are under $35.00.
this review was just zin-sational =)
i dont know about primitovo, but you are outstandingly cute

False
ZIN ZIN ZIN! LOVE ZINFANDEL!
Were you drunk while filming this? 🤣
This is actually how I am sober. Thus, the food and beverage industry seemed like an appropriate fit.
Tastes of jelly beans. Ridge is amazing

Merced County native right here! How 'bout you?
Please suggest healthy wine brand s
ramesh ramesh a bit of a misnomer here because the brand doesn’t determine the healthiness of a wine. I would recommend you seek out “dry” wines (no sugar). Technically, less sugar = more healthy.
Zinfandel is Croatian, why don’t we see it sold from Croatia?

I love Croatian and Slovenian wines. Very underrated.
Why has no one commented on the fact that she seems drunk?!
I can assure you: this is just how I act!
Ya no le sirvan... se tomó toda Italia y toda California...
I'll give you a like just because you look like my grandpa, :)
That sound like an awkward comment to make to a lady...
