It's the rut. The big bulls are gathering their cows, and no other bulls are welcome. Here a dominant bull checks one of his cows when another BIG bull enters his arena. The second bull, however, has an old injury and is blind in his right eye. That, coupled with his obvious damaged right antler at the base/pedicle, makes him very vulnerable, and it is obvious that he does not want to fight. We thought it was a cow whining when we heard the commotion, we never expected to find a bull making all that noise!
The first bull respects that the big boy is in trouble and does not force the issue, letting the damaged bull walk away untouched. The purpose of this video, as with many of ours, is to illustrate the lives of these animals not normally seen/appreciated. They teach us something every day, and we hope you can appreciate it too.

Everybody’s always asking where’s the big bull but nobody ever asks how’s the big bull
And that's a good question. We fear we lost him to the harsh winter last year, sadly. He is very much missed and we believe his buddy bull friend misses him more than we do because he seemed rather lost without his friend this rut.

It was rather pitiful. But we just saw him this year for the first time since last rut and he is robust, fat and healthy. Good to see he survived the winter!

I would love to have my own pet Bull Moose. I am in awe as to their size, muscle and bulk. WOW, I definitely have to get up to Alaska!!
I have a suggestion: Have you ever thought of running an Eco Tour? Your first customer might be me if you could take me near a huge Bull Moose .... any Moose in fact.
We've been approached about tours before, for sure. There are people who do that, they charge a lot of money! But AK is expensive, so I get it. It's a good thought and we'll keep that in mind and let you know! You could be our first!

Tempting, I know...Poor guy, he really got whacked in a bad fight a few years ago and that's what happened; blind in right eye, unstable right antler. But still very impressive growth despite it all. Good genes.

The one bulls antlers are very unique. I like how he has a kicker coming off the paddle and his antlers are lopsided.
Maybe that's why he's sad and not wanted by the other moose ;(

We do too, but this guy is smart and works the cows behind the backs of the other bulls. Funny. Clever bull! He's old and wise. But sometimes he gets busted... All good. (:

Thanks. We went over to see why the cow (we thought) was making SO much noise. It turned out to be this magnificent (but damaged) bull begging for mercy from the other bull. So pitiful. We felt badly for him. He is blind in his right eye and has broken bones at the base of his right antler where it will never grow back right after losing it in a fight two years ago. We love this bull. Hope he's around next year.

Its referred to as a moose's Bell, and its purpose is to drain water from the moose's head when feeding in water.
@@nbmooselovers The bell has no known function. The most common speculation is that it serves as communication during rut in form of both aesthetics and scent.

Why is the moose crying
He knows he shouldn't be in the other bull's area and he's been busted. He's asking the other bull not to fight him. The other bull just made sure he left the area. It was interesting to watch.

It is, but it's also interesting how the other bulls let him be; he tries to steal their cows but they don't run him off, just sort of escort him away. Like they respect him.

I think maybe that was falling from his nose or mouth. Didn’t look like it was coming from the eyes.
Their noses run constantly during the rut. Keeping the airways clear to better pick up the cow's scent. We watched a moose follow his nose for two miles as he wound his way down the valley into the hemlocks to find a cow. Trouble was there was a bigger bull there already, so he kinda got chased off. Lotta work, but their sense of smell is incredible. Thanks for the comment.
