It's interesting to see how cow moose really fight over a bull moose. Where mule deer does seem to like to play hard to get. Elk bulls really try to control the elk cows and constantly watch them and keep them close by chasing and snaking them. It's cool to see how different they all are when it comes to the mating season.
It is interesting to see the different strategies nature works out for these animals during their annual ruts. Dall sheep are rather merciless with their ewes, while the cow moose obviously run the show. So different. And the elk and deer as well. Great observation, thanks for the comment!
The one cow is coming into standing heat. She’s getting close to ovulating. And the survival of the fittest takes over. The bigger bull showed up and apparently the smaller bull didn’t want an argument. And the same cow is happy, ok with the more dominant bull. Great video. Once in a lifetime video. I witnessed the same thing with White tail deer from a tree stand…… once..
Yup you're right. The bulls dig a pit and get the cows riled up, the pheromones in the bull's urine drives the cows to the point of fighting over the pit. It is believed that triggers estrus, so the bulls have to work to keep the cows close by. And of course, other bulls will try to take advantage while the big boy is off chasing other bulls away. It's an exhausting time for them! Thanks for the comment! Must have been fun to watch from a tree stand with the deer.
They are very impressive headgear that's for sure! Good thing they don't have to wear them all through the winter. That's unneeded weight to have to pack around! Thanks ATP!

Just curious is it always where the dominant female pushes away the other females I've never seen this before I've seen it in wild horses but never in moose
Usually the bulls have to seek out the cows, this herd of cows thing is a phenomenon that happens in Alaska, I guess from the sheer numbers of moose. We think it's a riot that the cows fight over the rut pit and want nothing to do with the bull. Yet. Give them a week!
No it’s usually the male that is chasing doe’s. I have never seen females line up like this and fight to breed. And now that the real monster has shown up they go to him.
I live in Alaska. I have had 6 bull moose fighting together in my yard. I have 18 moose in my yard bulls and cows alike. Right now I have 3 bulls, 1 cow, 2 females with babies. The bigger bulls are trying to kick the babies out to breed again with the cows.
Great video is it just me but r they so quiet when the rut is on???? I would think such a big animal would make more sounds???? I'm from South Africa so was just wondering????
Grreetings to you in South Africa! Thank you for being here. It is truly amazing that moose do NOT make more vocalizations. They're so huge you'd think they would, right? We have seen several videos and high end productions of wildlife (BBC, etc) who get it all wrong with the moose, they insert these horrible bear sounds. It's comical to those of us who know moose and spend months with them. They grunt and whine but that's about it. Occasionally the cow will make a short bark sound at a calf. We have yet to get that on film. But have certainly heard it a few times. And we haven't seen a documentary that has caught it either. Anyway, great question. And thank you for asking it! Welcome!
Interesting the way the bull moose constantly flicks his tongue in and out while the cows gather around him. Is that something he does in anticipation of which cow will choose him?

Yes, they work very hard to keep them close by until they are truly ready. In the meantime it's a game of sorts. Exhausting for the bulls but really the cows run the show!
Sure thing. I'll explain it briefly. It's mating season and male moose dig a pit in the ground and pee in it. That attracts the females and they want his "perfume". Sometimes other bulls steal the pits while the one who made it is off chasing a smaller male away
Omg that robustly powerful male just released a potent scent that drives & quite posessed in those females to mate with him never observed moose behaviors before just amazing😱

I think the first bull was probably a senior bull. He had great body size, but his rack was not as big as it has probably been during his lifetime. That other monster bull was in his full prime. Who wouldn't have given up the field?
So the kind of thin bull with the really wide rack is the very senior bull. He is a fighter/warrior and he won this one against an up and coming younger bull whose rack is absolutely crazy fun with stuff going on. But again, the older, wiser bull bested the younger one because he had uphill/high ground advantage. So interesting, because it was really an even match other than that! HI there, we welcome the question. The depression is called a rut pit. Get ready cuz this is strange but very true. There is usually a pecking order among the females and that is what you were watching, so yes....it's a thing. Thanks for your question.
