Same thing happened to me. I just paid $555 to replace my serpentine belt, only to have the issue occur again moments ago. Wish I saw your video sooner.
My wife watched your video and told me she knew how to fix the problem. i looked at her a little crazy but sure enough this was the problem thank you so much man.
I had this exact same issue last year, thankfully I was under warranty took it to the dealer and it took 3 attempts to fix this issue. They replaced front and rear main seals then they decided on just replacing the entire valve cover. Finally I know what the real issue was, thanks a lot.
Very good explanation. By the way BMW (Mauritius) couldn't diagnose this noise problem even after 3 visits to its Repairs Department. What a shame for the sole BMW representative in the country. Again Thanks; you're much better than those dudes. S.Thomas.
Quick note here - It is a good fix however, do not seal the new cap in the groove with sealant. The cap is designed to suck air up around the diaphragm on the inside of the cap. If you place sealer in the small space of the cap - as shown - this blocks the air from being pulled into the diaphragm cavity. Place the sealant on the out side of the lip of the extrusion on the valve cover and then snug the new cap over that. Seal with some aluminum tape until the sealant dries or just leave it on. This way there is an air tight seal on the new cap but not on the interior of the new cap - this allows for the diaphragm to breath...NO squealing.
hi Philip, i saw another article online that require glue the membrane to the valve cover, bimmerprofs.com/crankcase-ventilation-part2/ which is the right way to do it? I am plan to replace my PCV membrane on my 520i N43 E61, the PCV valve is part of valve cover, I could not find any video on google how to do it, yet.
Thank you so much - this is exactly the problem I'm having with my 2014 335I. Local Dealership is asking $1,700 to replace the valve cover gasket. What a rip off. Thanks for posting such a thorough, informative video of the issue and possible resolution. You are super awesome.
Yes, my 328i convertible 2013 has this happen the other day and the dealership wants just over $2,000 to repair it, about $639 for the part alone, and I found a shop that will do it with OEM for $1,083. Not sure if this fix is available for my motor. If it ever happens again I will look into it deeper. But thanks for sharing this anyway. Only BMW could turn a 20-30 dollar part into a $2,000 repair! Like the hall sensor that went out in August, a $25 part, but integrated into the hydraulic ram that raises and lowers the top, so the whole thing had to be replaced at more than $2,000 and towing of $485. My third BMW 328i and the first one with any repairs needed. Any more like this one and I will have to live in the damned thing.
I did mine PCV replacement immediately after I drove the car so everything was warm and it was very easy to make a small cut on the side and pull out whole PCV assembly without even tearing it in to pieces. Unfortunately, howling NOISE from the front main seal did NOT go-away. When I started my X5/N55 on idle for about 5 minutes, the noise returned back, while car was ruining and noise was present, I carefully loosen the oil cap and I felt very high vacuum built-up, which was relived by opening Oil Cap and the howling noise was disappeared. After putting back Oil Cap, noise started again. So it is clear that there are many pressure regulating valves/ air ducts in the Oil Cover and some of them may be damaged as well. Before removing faulty PCV, I connected a 1/8 clear rubber tube (30 cm ) and other end slighly dipped in to water cup and I see it sucked water immediately because orange diaphragm of the PCV was broken at many places and also became brittle , after replacing PCV, the water sucking was not observed that means new PCV is not leaking to atmosphere. Noise issue confirmed that there is other pressure regulating hidden valves are faulty and which can not be replaced so my next step is to replace the Valve Cover.
Thanks for this tip! - My squeal just started today. I put a tube on the PVC cap hole and yes, can move air thru it. Also, the squeal goes away as soon as I pull the oil filler cap off (lots of vacuum and hard to get off) This tells me that the PVC valve itself is not working and there is too much vacuum in the crank case. I'll try the PVC hack first and if that doesn't fix it, I'll buy a new cover. It sucks though as I just replaced the cover due to an oil leak about 5K miles ago!
Finally I got full valve cover with gasket from autohauz az URO brand for 136$, it took me 10 hours and finally all noise gone! Relatives spark plug same time as well. Only issue was the rear side bolt to remove and put it back without using torques due to tight location.
@@kishorham Glad that fix worked for you! That bolt was hard get too, but I just put a swivel on it and was able to use the torque wrench. After all that work, I didn't want anything to cause the whole job to fail!

It's more than just replacing the CCV with that top part only. The whole valve cover has vents and air tunnels that get clogged and if not replacing the whole Valve Cover problems will still continue like loud whistling and humming after just replacing the Valve cover gasket only as the whole valve cover with build in CCV should be replaced... I mean if we don’t care to use the auto stop feature, should we still replace it? Have this exact problem but I never really cared or liked the auto stop so I’m fine with just having it off to be honest. Or do I still need to change it?
If we turn off start/stop function and drives the car like that, would it be a problem? Do I have to have valve cover changed sooner or later? My car makes the noise as well and I usually don't let start/stop interfere if I drive in slow moving traffic by using the manual transmission but yeah, the noise is annoying.

Good deal on the Valve Cover! I bought my aftermarket URO Valve Cover from Autohausaz and spent almost $300...😐 Still ended up saving a ton of money doing the work myself though.
Your education is really excellent and it solves the problem, but my problem is beyond this and the reason is the place where I live and the country where I live, which has a law similar to the law of the jungle. My compatriots trample my fellow countrymen and cause my country to be embargoed, that's why cars and spare parts and all the things people need are very expensive or rare. He found a valve door in the parking lot and the ability to buy a valve door that costs 500 dollars in my country has disrupted my life and I am slowly getting depressed. 😭
I literally did replace the same PCV valve yesterday, 1/19/2020. I had the exact same ending: I need to replace th whole valve cover. Front engine seal started to whistle after I replaced the PCV valve I bought from Amazon. I ordered a Febi Bilstein valve cover for 254$ and I'll replace it this weekend. Hopefully that will cure my seal's whistling, 3rd cylinder missfires and CEL. 2011 BMW X5 E70 35i with 84.000 miles on it.

Hi, my 2011 335i was making the same noise so I took it in for a whole new valve cover, I picked it up today and it is still making the same noise even at idle, any idea if it could be a faulty valve cover that I got? Please help me I am so lost

@@marvintorwesten8508 used a rotary tool, i.e. Dremel, and a small pick or chisel to remove any leftover from the glued old cap. Just take your time and work slowly. UA-cam has plenty of video about that. Just search for pcv. BMW. Just to be clear, you do not need to remove the engine valve cover, only the pcv cap.
Just a tip for people replacing just the pcv valve, make sure you put only small amount of glue on the outside of the housing not on the cap, same spot as per the oem valve. Too much glue will cause the new diaphragm to stick to the new cap which will close the valve and not operate correctly. You will end up hearing the squealing sound again like in this video as the diaphragm can not move freely.
My E70 with N55 engine is also producing the same squealing noise and appreciate your video very much. But unfortunately the part number that you show in the video is referring to the whole cover not just the PCV. Where can I buy the PCV?
It is great video. I do have the same problem . And I'm 70% fixed the issue by deleting the crank ventilation valve so I only get this noise in hot start not even everytime but cold start no noise at all
Yes, and do not perform this "repair" shown here it will not hold. Even though people will say buy an OEM valve cover that is bull!! An aftermarket valve cover is just as good, or in the case of BMW OEM valve cover JUST AS BAD! but 1/4th the price. eBay has many for around 100 bucks including gasket.
It's more than just replacing the CCV with that top part only as shown on this video. Ebay $90 to $140 for complete Valve Cover unit which includes the valve gasket already on it... BMW OEM brand is just another rip-off like FCP Euro's overpriced Valve Covers as well! Amazing tip: Soak the "valve cover gasket" that comes with the whole unit un 303 Aerospace protectant solution (PepBoys & amazon has it) for a whole day prior to installing and that gasket will last a lifetime as the 303 will penetrate into the rubber and will prevent that gasket from drying and cracking in the future! Amazing for everything rubber/elastic etc....
HELP!!!!!!! I am getting the Error codes 28A0, 2D5A, 2C58, 2BEA after changing the PCV. Do you recommend changing the Valve cover. I tried changing the Wall Cover seals as well. Before changing the PCV I just had error 2D5A and 2C58 with rough idle and engine reduced power message but engine was having power
So you bought a whole new valve cover. Did it come with the gaskets and pcv? The link to ebay doesn't work. Or does everything need to be bought separately?
Also wanted to add onto my previous comment this is what they said "Found diaphragm for crankca()e vent on valve cover ruptured. Replacing valve cover. " And the issue that mainly came from mainly having my AC on.
Thanks for sharing the whole experience.......The N52 engine has the same round valve/diaphragm that you replaced in the beginning. I do not believe it has all the other integrated diaphragms that the N55 has. That Diaphragm fails on the N52 as well. So this is help to those who have an N52 engine.
I replaced the round pcv valve on my 2011 328i N52 I was very careful to do it correctly as possible but it started to act up again in a few days. It ran ok but started to make noise and a lot of suction from the oil cap. I felt there was no other alternative to but to replace the entire valve cover. I have a BMW motorcycle which I love. but I will sell this car an never go to BMW cars again Too much trouble in other areas as well.

I’m sorry but if I’m not mistake then I believe this job should be a factory recall. It’s free replace. You should check with your local dealer.. thank you for make a such great video.
I looked into that but wasn't able to find any info, thanks for the tip anyway and glad you liked it.
Vehicular DIY : I looked so many DIY video about BMW, your video is the best so far. Thank you for putting so much effort for all these videos. PLEASE keep up... GREAT JOBS!! I really don’t know how to take care my BMW without you.... 😂 😂
Any further information on this? I have a 2011 X5 N55 making noise, I replaced the PCV by cutting it off and that seemed to fix the problem for awhile but the noise is coming back. Just got a quote today for $2k for the rear main seal replacement.
Yo so I did this diy like 1 year ago seemed fine did the valve cover gasket yesterday after putting the car back together getting hella codes but they go away after clearing couple time but also the car is making the squealing sound on cold starts when opening the oil cap the sound goes away start after the car warms up it goes away too everything is put back together right this is my second time doing the valve cover gasket on a n55 do u think the pcv diaphragm went bad again maybe a crack in the valve cover I’m about to just order the valve cover cause idk what to do at this point ☠️
Would a vented oil cap solve this issue as well ?
You know what your doing for sure! New valve cover vs pcv better going with the valve cover with built in pcv and same future issues. Good job
True to your word. Thanks for being the Guinea pig for us. I don't have this issue yet, but i have a 2013 X5 N55 motor.
Can you do this with the valve cover still on or is it best to take it off
wow big thanks for this, I also assumed I had to dremel the old one off from the side...this looks so much cleaner! Well done!
Hey
What about oil catch can? If I install this will this solve the problem?
Hi, I’m having the same issue, do you know if that cap also fits into 328i 2009
Supposedly when the valve goes bad the pressure builds up under the cover and that is the true cause that creates the infamous valve cover oil leaks.
Do you know if that pressure is bad or damaging?
That is what is happening to my 2011 X3, becoming an oily mess
Good video. I was reading the flash point of motor oil is only 232 deg F. I wonder how safe it is to do the heat gun on the cap while still installed? anyone any thoughts?
How is the valve cover holding up today? What brand did you get?
Hi there, I replaced a water pump for my f10 535i xDrive 2012 and did the bleeding and everything worked fine, few day later vehicle started overheating, I checked the water pump by activation method and didn't seem that it works! Diagnosed the system and got the code 20A909 ! What can the real reason be for it to stop functioning?
So I had my Valve Cover replaced by a local mechanic and then it started making this noise a few months later. What does that mean?
Does it also loose power?
Hey Nice Job, has the after market vale cover given you any issue up untill now or all is still good?
Did this and the noise got worse, next ill do the whole valve cover, but it doesnt work. Ill let you know if it fixes mine
Can you do a oil pan gasket replacement on this x5 35i?? Please... i have a 2014 x5 35i 86xxx miles and is leaking from the oil pan drain plug😔 i don’t know if I should buy a whole Oil Pan for it, and I really Don’t wanna take her to the Dealership. Any suggestions?
I have this same sound happening on my 2014 x5 f15. Is it safe to drive until I can get it fixed?
Would this cause oil consumption?
How is it holding up? I want try this method
Good deal on the Valve Cover! I bought my aftermarket URO Valve Cover from Autohausaz and spent almost $300...😐 Still ended up saving a ton of money doing the work myself though.
Did replacing valve cover resolve the issue?
Would having a tune be a factor in this??
This scared the shit out of me and i thoight it was the belt. God damn valve cover
has the KGE membrane repair not worked ? Why ?
Will this whole kit fit my bmw 335xi f30 n55 2013?
I literally did replace the same PCV valve yesterday, 1/19/2020. I had the exact same ending: I need to replace th whole valve cover. Front engine seal started to whistle after I replaced the PCV valve I bought from Amazon.
I ordered a Febi Bilstein valve cover for 254$ and I'll replace it this weekend. Hopefully that will cure my seal's whistling, 3rd cylinder missfires and CEL.
2011 BMW X5 E70 35i with 84.000 miles on it.
update ?
Replacing the whole valve cover solved the issue completely.
now i see not just i work for bmw factory:S good video thank you i will buy new one i see
Very happy I found this, will be applying this to my e90 this weekend. Thanks a lot!
How it works bro
@@5htv230 worked out fine, was a pain in the ass doing it on car but not too bad. Had to take out the cowl and move the ignition coil harness. Just be careful not to snap the tabs on the valve cover that slid over the ccv (I snapped 2 of them lol) as it's very easy to do.
I did this but It's squealing again after one week. What could've made it go bad again so fast?
Hi, what is the Brand that you used with the valve cover? Thank you
2008 bmw 550i n62 4.8l can you update , program my car over the air , ty let me know sorry to ask
What is the purpose of the PC valve cover..what this pcv do anyway.
Is it very difficult to change the valve cover
Hi, my 2011 335i was making the same noise so I took it in for a whole new valve cover, I picked it up today and it is still making the same noise even at idle, any idea if it could be a faulty valve cover that I got? Please help me I am so lost
TURBOCHARGER AIR PRESSURE BOOST SOLENOID VALVE
Awesome video. What is the Start / Stop feature? I have a 2009 X5 3.0 and have the same issue. Dealer wants almost $2,000. But watching your video is helping a lot. I am thinking to do what you did first and if that does not get rid of the noice My mechanic will replace the cover. Any additional advice please. Thank You, your video is helping lots of ppl.
GREAT DIY! Now I am tempted to see if there is a way to do this on my N52. Any ideas?
Just did it, super easy
@@maximedenomme838 how did you remove the Cover from a n52 ?
@@marvintorwesten8508 used a rotary tool, i.e. Dremel, and a small pick or chisel to remove any leftover from the glued old cap. Just take your time and work slowly. UA-cam has plenty of video about that. Just search for pcv. BMW. Just to be clear, you do not need to remove the engine valve cover, only the pcv cap.
do i have to put glue on it???
Just a tip for people replacing just the pcv valve, make sure you put only small amount of glue on the outside of the housing not on the cap, same spot as per the oem valve. Too much glue will cause the new diaphragm to stick to the new cap which will close the valve and not operate correctly. You will end up hearing the squealing sound again like in this video as the diaphragm can not move freely.
Fantastic video again! Thank you for your work.
Will this problem cause your car to be thrown into limp?
Is there any way I can drill a hole to temporarily relieve pressure so I do not blow a seal
I do not believe so as that would cause the PCV system to not function as it should.
O my lord this is my issue thanks alot will this throw a code?
yes im same the problem and i change up ccv & crankshaft oil seal the same come out !
Thank you so much brother I have same issue with my BMW 328I
Thinking a lot about that issue I bought a electric shift sensor For that issue 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
What is the name of the piece
what is that orange stuff at 5:00?
can i just drive without oil cap . Then no noise and solve the problem
My E70 with N55 engine is also producing the same squealing noise and appreciate your video very much. But unfortunately the part number that you show in the video is referring to the whole cover not just the PCV. Where can I buy the PCV?
Found it on ebay.....lol..
It is great video. I do have the same problem . And I'm 70% fixed the issue by deleting the crank ventilation valve so I only get this noise in hot start not even everytime but cold start no noise at all
What do you mean by deleting crank ventilation valve?
Can you do this on E60
Link for the valve cover doesn’t show the valve cover anymore, anyway u could show us another brand u recommend or an affordable valve cover? Please
I have a 2011 335 i and is having the same issue. Replacing the valve cover should fix it?
Yes, and do not perform this "repair" shown here it will not hold. Even though people will say buy an OEM valve cover that is bull!! An aftermarket valve cover is just as good, or in the case of BMW OEM valve cover JUST AS BAD! but 1/4th the price. eBay has many for around 100 bucks including gasket.
It's more than just replacing the CCV with that top part only as shown on this video. The whole valve cover has vents and air tunnels that get clogged and if not replacing the whole Valve Cover, problems will still continue like loud whistling and humming and rough idling on cold starts after just replacing the Valve cover gasket only as the whole valve cover with build in CCV should be replaced...
How did you no it was bad
eBay link is broken. What brand was that aftermarket valve cover
Thanks gang. Needed this for my f06
The link for valve cover does not work , is there another link ?????
Will that piece fit on a s55 engine as well?
Yes it should I’m having the same issue on my bmw m4 it happen 2 days ago just waiting for the part to come in
Hi Bud... question. have you installed a oil catch can on your N55, i see lot of folks are doing it on N55 and N54 motors... any advise?
I didn't, I'd say the N54 benefits from it much more than the N55 but it's a good upgrade either way.
Wow this video was perfect. Thank you.
Can we make automatic e92 335i do 2step ? If so can you tell me how it’s done ?? Thanks
bms antilag kit
Why wanna pretend your cool
Thanks for sharing the whole experience.......The N52 engine has the same round valve/diaphragm that you replaced in the beginning. I do not believe it has all the other integrated diaphragms that the N55 has. That Diaphragm fails on the N52 as well. So this is help to those who have an N52 engine.
Big help... Thanks.
Damn just bought my 2011 535i and it’s making this sound but it only happens after I rev it in idle tho
I replaced the round pcv valve on my 2011 328i N52 I was very careful to do it correctly as possible but it started to act up again in a few days. It ran ok but started to make noise and
a lot of suction from the oil cap. I felt there was no other alternative to but to replace the entire valve cover. I have a BMW motorcycle which I love.
but I will sell this car an never go to BMW cars again Too much trouble in other areas as well.
