I’m all for going package free, but this shop is insanely expensive for like a college student like me. I mean $20 for bug spray is insane, even when it’s recyclable and sustainable. Like at that point I’d rather just go to cvs and get it for under $9..
Yeah but your paying for the product to also be made ethically and witgout plastic, unfortunately at the moment the general public does not have common knowledge of the costs of making a product sustainably or ethically. Until the demand for sustainable products increases it is unlikely the price will decrease.
Doctor Bronner's Castile soap. It's worth it and is multi purpose. It can be used as bug spray, laundry detergent, shampoo, face wash, just a general cleaner to keep your house clean, and an alternative to pesticide on your vegetables. It's vegan and organic.
I am also a college student and I realize how expensive these things are, but there are other way. During summer I work outside, all bug spray came in plastic packaging and plastic free ones cost too much so I made my own. In a spray bottle, I just put in 20 to 40 drops of essential oil or do what I did and just used lemon zest. Then some apple cider vinegar and a bit of witch hazel. Look up diy zero waste insect repellent and you will find tons of recipes. There will always be other options!
What we do at My house is what we can. We have to stay withing the constraints of budget amd common sense. Not everyone can be as guerilla as the zero waste people.

Judging by what they are talking about, the prices of these products are expensive. This just seems like a great way of saving earth while making money. I think when it comes to environment, everything should be inexpensive and made easy for the many of us. That way, even unreliable, lazy and ignorant people as well as low to no income individuals can contribute.
Reuse food containers and buy bulk, buy a vegetable CSA program, make your own cleaning solution, buy used instead of new...etc. These are very affordable things to do and you don't have to shop at Package Free. For example, instead of buying reusable produce bags, I added two cotton shoe laces to turn my old cotton pillowcase into a produce bag. I made a cute sleeve for a Starbucks Frappuccino glass bottle and it is my reusable water bottle.
Cos u stupid n wanna feel good about yourself. So you pay more to lie to yourself. You think they really r package free? The goods, the factory, the process of setting up the shop. RonLarhz so I take it you live completely package and electricity free then? If not, stop criticising people who are trying their best. I don’t see a problem with feeling good about being less impactful on the environment. I guess some of us are more educated than others.
The products in the store may be package-free, but she also sells online. There is a huge impact on the environment when you are shipping items all over the country.
I live in Williamsburg (Brooklyn) and walk by Package Free very night on my way home. While I thoroughly support the idea, I still see PF take out huge cardboard containers and trash bags half the time I walk home. Also, the prices of this place is ridiculous. We are talking $50 for a metal bento box. You can easily purchase one elsewhere, package free and all for much less. I like the concept but the price attached is ridiculous.
Cardboard can be recycled and they will be recycled because there is some value in it. Stainless steel is not cheap but that's the reason why metal are most likely recycled. You can use glass or bamboo container instead. Plus, that huge stainless steel bento box may be the most expensive item in store. I was looking for an air tight metal container for Kimchi and the large ones all cost around 50 bucks, even on Amazon.
Lauren like she says in the video doesnt only focus on the sustainability of the product itself but also of the way its obtained. Sometimes metal is mined under conditions which damage the environment greatly so those"cheaper " options you're talking about might be doing that. While Lauren focuses on the sustainability of the whole process from when the material is obtained till the product is manufactured and ready to be sold.
I see what you mean, I was contacted by a company who wanted to work with me, but they were charging $95 for a bento box. They weren’t a local company to me either and all of their products were waaay over priced
Now one thing I really want. Clothing and fabric made without plastic. One thing people don't know is that every time clothing with some sort of synthetic material is washed; It ends up leaching into the grey water and into the environment. Places like package free shop are important. I just wish a combination of organic clothing with no dyes or chemicals can be introduced with the concept of zero waste. So much clothing is thrown out after being worn for a short period of time. Much of what is donated in thrift is usually sent to foreign countries or to landfill. I have a theory that some of what is being thrifted is actual in response to the fabric causing irritation on the skin of the individual after washing and releasing the dyes and chemicals from the fabric surface. We need to change fashion culture and consumerism in general to see a massive change in our world.

i wish they had a store like this in houston, tx!! it’s so hard looking for sustainable products here. i don’t like buying things online because i feel like it defeats the purpose of trying to be environmentally friendly :(
Actually, online shopping is not as bad as you think. Our Changing Climate made a video about it. I am sure this store will not use plastic shipping materials. If you recycle the shipping material (my personal guess will be cardboard and brown paper, which will be recycled because there is some value in cardboard), and buy what you need not what you want, and keep using the items for a long time, you will be fine.
How much of an impact online products make depends on whether they had to be flown to your location, cos planes emit an unbelievably high amount of carbon

How are only 1.5 billion toothpaste tubes thrown out each year? There's 7.7 billion people on the planet... usually toothpaste doesn't last more than a couple months per person... what am I missing
I am guessing there are a lot of people around the world who use toothbrushes for a long time. Or don't even use toothbrushes and use homemade/foraged alternatives instead.
A tube of toothpaste lasts me half a year. It’s not a toiletry that you have to buy often. If it were 7 billion thrown away then that would be a bigger issue
Hi, this is amazing... Even I wanted to open a shop like this in India.please help me out by giving the guidelines to start a store. Also need to chat or talk with you about the investment required.etc.
well someone needs to pay for labour/time /rent/taxes and all the other expenses that come with running a business!!! She doesn't force you to buy her products, if you want then you can invest and support her package free shop because her values truly align with what her business is about. Buying from CVS take for instance (what do they do to reduce their waste - nothing?) or at least not like package free - so its all about investing in what you need and supporting a shop that aligns with your values with trying reduce your waste. nothing is cheap and comes free. But if you want something cheaper than DO IT YOURSELF simple! Don't disparage a business just because you cannot afford their products.
greg I get your point. Eco-friendly items are and can be expensive. But if I was intending on changing my lifestyle to live more sustainably/naturally then sure I'll perhaps invest in a natural bug spray or a few other items or simply find affordable alternatives to DIY. At the end of the day, to me, it comes down to supporting more green businesses who try to at least change the mindsets of people to make better choices. The choice is yours to buy or not to buy. Yes importing products has its own environmental implications as do with many other products we purchase like our phones. But I also feel like because the world is going "green" this has encouraged China themselves to strengthen their industries to promote more green products which enhances consumers in china and everywhere else to consume sustainably. Yeah not every action we take to go eco is very sustainable but it's surely a start. Although, of course the best option is to use what you have and go back to living like hunters and gatherers. 😄

omg they should make composible tape or something
0:50 That soap is way overpriced WTF!
TheCookingNerd this is a shampoo
Not trying to be a hater but that shop is so pricey. I went to amazon and they sell similar items. Glad there is a shop about it. I bet she makes tons of money.
petroleum products can also be environmental if we consider the amount of energy used and resources used to make these tools and utensils. when you dispose a plastic spoon, it can be recycled and molded again to a spoon. a never ending cycle
I love thoses videos
What do you do about zero waste with a pet such as a dog?
Ms.Lauren, the small bottle that has trash can also be completely removed..you know what that is..
I live in india amd there not so much awareness about sustainable living amd we do not have such package free shops here. Plus for a middle class person, the products are too expensive and way out of their budgets. Also for a college student looking to go for sustainable living like me, there aren't many options becoz as i said earlier the products are too expensive and not accesible to all
Any suggestions to use instead of aluminum foil for baking and wrapping sandwiches? And ziplock bags?
There are silicone lids for baking. Put sandwich in a metal or glass container. Brown paper bag with no coating can be composted at home too and you can buy it at almost every grocery store.
Reusable silicone baking lid. They make square metal or glass containers, which will fit sandwich. Brown paper bag with no coating works too, you can compostit at home.
I use Blue Avocado's (re)zip bags
How are only 1.5 billion toothpaste tubes thrown out each year? There's 7.7 billion people on the planet... usually toothpaste doesn't last more than a couple months per person... what am I missing
I am guessing there are a lot of people around the world who use toothbrushes for a long time. Or don't even use toothbrushes and use homemade/foraged alternatives instead.
A tube of toothpaste lasts me half a year. It’s not a toiletry that you have to buy often. If it were 7 billion thrown away then that would be a bigger issue
@@020ctmarie right but if each person in the world uses 2 tubes a year, that's 15.4 billion tubes...
Katie Rose girl, what is your point?lol people are clearly not using as much toothpaste as you assume they should so what is your issue?
@@020ctmarie I'm just saying the math doesn't add up lol
Hi, this is amazing... Even I wanted to open a shop like this in India.please help me out by giving the guidelines to start a store. Also need to chat or talk with you about the investment required.etc.
So basically back to the good old days.
We indians already had ever thing eco friendly.
What does she do with her computers
Its so like in the time
well someone needs to pay for labour/time /rent/taxes and all the other expenses that come with running a business!!!
that menstrual cup is packaged tho? love the store i just dont know how they didnt see that lol
You mean those Lunette cups? The packages are recyclable & compostable!
5:24 $50 for a water bottle
I don't use high end body wash but someone may like it. Bar soap cleans well too.
I believe those are expensive to purchase.
