This is the future! However we still need to consider more about the sanitary issues.
You can take your reused containers to the store, but when you refilled, apparently the taps and scoops touched your own container, and even almost put the jar inside the box containing food.
It’s impossible to make sure everyone’s containers are clean, so some way to prevent things get polluted should be figured out

I was just gonna comment about this! I love less waste when it comes to food packaging, but the germaphobe in me couldn't really enjoy this video :( But it's heading in the right direction, so that's definitely a good thing 👍🏼

Amazing idea but this needs work. First of all printing stickers isn't zero waste. You could just have a self check machine like any other grocery store where you choose the item, weight it and then it's just added to your total. The remembering numbers seems like a hassle too. In order for this to work it needs to be as accessible and easy as possible. We need the general public using this, not just a few conscious individuals. And then there's contamination issues with people bringing in their half used food. Food poisoning is no joke.

Great idea, but definitely still needs work before the majority of people will make the switch. Had a few ideas! For the contamination issue, half full containers should not be allowed, and they could have a UV sanitizer at the front where an employee sanitizes all your containers before you can shop. Also could have that employee weigh each of your containers and instead of printing stickers, write the weights with a chalk/dry erase marker on each container. Wish there was something. Like this near me though! Bulk is usually cheaper too because you’re not paying for all the extra packaging

Yes. This was my thought. Everyone putting their hands in or on these things (nobody washing or sanitizing their hands beforehand) isn't sanitary either. Who knows if the scoops or pumps ever get washed/cleaned at all. And these reuseable bags, jars, bottles, etc that people bring in might or might not (ever, ewww) get washed. I work in a store and so I know how nasty people (and their reuseable bags) can be.

    • @sarapotterweasley

Kayla Waters exactly! I work in the demo department at Costco and the way we keep everything sanitized is crazy. But I love the idea, just wish it was covered in a different way.

I think ideas like this are great. Obviously there are the sanitary issues that need to be addressed as many people have already mentioned, but one thing that bothers me about this store, and many other stores like this one, is their aversion to non-organic and GMO products. Organic and non-GMO products usually come at a drastically higher price point, which makes this type of eco-friendly shopping experience only available for a small, privileged minority of people. If stores like this want to make the biggest impact possible, I think they would try to make it available to the largest market possible by also selling cheaper and just as healthy non-organic and GMO products. Again, I love the idea and am happy stores like this are beginning to pop up here and there, but ultimately the association of eco-friendly products having to also be pricy, organic, non-GMO products needs to be severed for this to have any truly meaningful impact on the environment.

As great as this is, I don’t think I trust people’s jars and containers. Maybe if they did a jar return program where you come they give you sterilized containers/bags, and when you come back next time you can bring those back and get new ones.

In Quebec, there are some stores that have bulk products such as pasta, flour, candies and all this stuff, but there are not many stores that have the bulk "home products" and I think it's the one that could help us the most because everybody uses this at some point

Cool idea. I've seen something very similar, all the containers you bring from home are cleaned and empty, and you write the Tare Weight on the container or a piece of paper and then at the check out register, they take off the Tare Weight for you, thus no printing labels.
In my area the closest we have is a warehouse chain called Win-Co, where they have a bulk section like this, we love it.

  • @kelleann144
    @kelleann144 5 років тому

I'm seeing a lot of comments about the germs and having to weigh the containers before you fill them to get the right price. I think a solution to both of those problems would be for the store to provide the containers in the membership few and each time you come in you turn your last used containers in to be washed and you get a new set that has already been cleaned. Kind of like the milk in the glass jars at grocery stores; you buy it and when you turn the clean empty jar in you get a money return but in this case you get a set of new sanitized containers. Since they would all be the same containers the store would know the weight of them empty and be able to just click a few buttons then weigh it at and get the right price there at the register.

I’m trying to go waste free, but there’s not very much options in my region for it. But just yesterday went to a rite aid, my friend got a soda and I got sunglasses. The clerk asked both of us if we wanted a bag, both of us said no. So a plastic bag or two wasn’t tossed to later on sit around in a landfill. As for the peanut butter jar, I get the humor. Everyone knows edgy veg that you do clean every jar used.....love the video and had to subscribe.

Great video. 2 zero waste shop's have opened up recently in Dundee, Scotland one is called Birchwood's Cafe and Food Emporium and the other is called The little green larder. Have been to Birchwood's and the selection of bulk dried foods is limited and it gives you refill options for washing up liquid, laundry detergent and handwash. Haven't been to the Little green larder yet but plan to do so. There's a 3rd zero waste store planned called Greenway's just search in Facebook for details.

I'm happy to see this my grocery store is a little different. It's in Arkansas and for anyone living near or in Fayetteville should go support Ozark natural foods. They still have some plastic, but it's low waste and they are trying to make a good change. This is definitely like going back in time. Specially for all the mommies out there doing the cloth diapers. I'm barely going to start now that my daughter is 10 months old. Wish I could've started it sooner, but my mom was surprised I wanted to do cloth diapers. She and all her siblings grew up doing the whole cloth diapers. So all of these changes is like going back in time. It would be funny if they start hiring for a milk man job like back in the days as my great grandmother would say lol.

I really like the idea but I agree with so many on here ....No half used containers. The refilling just made me cringe. I think even if you're a person who values this kind of low waste shopping you would be ok with a rule of no partially filled containers. All you would need to do is have one spare for each product. That way you would always have one empty container to use when you go to the store and though technically you're using more containers to start, in the long run it is still very minimal and would eliminate the gross factor and the real actual possibility of product contamination. Also I read a comment about a UV cleaner in the front for your containers. I like that Idea too.

Can someone explain why you have to enter the weight manual? In my country you put the item on a scale, enter the PLU code by pressing on the image of the product and the sticker with the product, price and weight comes out. We also have registers that can weigh items to check it.

Here's a great tip; just take a photo of ur half full containers on the scale instead of writing them down on the containers, I find that way more efficient and that's what we do at our bulk store. When we walk in, we head to the scale to weigh and snap all the containers that have stuff in them, that way we can shop and refill without worry. As for empty containers, we have the original weight of each container written on our each container so if a jar is empty, we don't need to weigh it again cos the weight is right there. Seriously, try it.

I was at a Farmboy grocery store last week and watched in horror as a woman put her hands food that was for sale and treated it like it was a free sample area and snacked and grazed until she was finally approached by a manager. I am not keen on too much packaging either but I have to say sometimes packaging gives me a feeling of security. The Body Shop years ago had a set up where you come into the shop and refill your containers. I don't know why it stopped but it was before its time.

I was a bit skeptical at first, but I'm thinking about how much waste we could save by having grocery stores like this and I love it. Unfortunately, there's a lot of trust in this system- from entering your own weights and prices and having products out in the open where they could be easily stolen. I'm not sure if it could be achieved but I hope to see it some day

This is super cool!! Oh lord I sound like a germaphobe haha but seriously.. awesome concept!! I’d definitely love a store like this. I’m just worried about contaminating. :D

    • @nikkibbander

Girl! I agree, I think this is a wonderful idea but used jars and containers is gross, you are right people eat peanut butter straight from the jar I even see people lick the head of sauce bottles like ketchup or honey when its dripping a bit.... I think this system can use some work to keep germs and bugs out** like when she smeared the coconut oil on the top of her jar...now lets allow 20 other people to do that, with some jars washed and some not... yuck the amount of germs cross contaminating is making me ich....great concept but poor execution. Maybe they should provide the containers since you have to pay monthly fee anyway to shop there or they could have a wash and dry station you have to use if you bring your own containers, they must be washed and dried first then you can get your product. And absolutely no half full containers 🤢🤮 or jars...yuck!!
