The entire couch scene including when Gina fell asleep next to E.J. on the couch is my favorite Portwell scene. Even though they are the opposite in some ways they were trying to understanding each other by asking “What is that like?” it shows good communication of having a deep conversation. The scene shows how comfortable they are around each other and how they feel comfortable opening up their problems to each other signs of a healthy relationship.
For the plot.😂 I'm still team Portwell even though they were different ages. They still built up the characters together in a way that just made sense. Plus, the director mentioned a scene between Gina (Sofia Wylie) and Ricky (Joshua Bassett) after homecoming dance. He mentioned the chemistry between the two actors being really palpable in the scene so it just made sense to him to make Rina canon. I felt it was just for the sake of the plot plus Olivia Rodrigo leaving the show so I guest it made it even more convenient.

Ok. Truth time. Am I the only one that hated the whole break up in season 3? Like, EJ was distracted for 1 week and she just broke up with him? And he wasn't even being selfish, he was killing himself to make the show work. I know she wanted to be respected and I totally agree but it seems to me like she overcorrected.
They were going in different directions and having 2 different summers as Gina said. Plus he was going off to college, I think she realized it wasn’t going to work.
They are the most precious things ever. I’m extremely scared for them now though. Episode 5 of season 3 comes out in just a few hours. The hate EJ is getting right now is not fair. This huge sudden responsibility was thrown at him and his dad is wanting to send him away to St Louis. I feel really bad for him. EJ saw how excited Gina got when telling him that her mom was moving back and that they are going to be neighbors. EJ wants that so badly. It’s horrible that his dad is interfering with that. We know that some rina is going to happen we just don’t know how much. I think it would be very stupid to put Ricky and Gina together. I hate that ship so much. After all that he put her through in season two, it’s just horrible. Ricky had his chance but he picked Nini. Ricky lead Gina on, flirted with her while with Nini, and asked for dating advice knowing that she liked him. Gina was miserable for so long. It was so bad where she literally wanted to move back in with her mom. Then EJ was like this light for her. He pointed out amazing things in her that she couldn’t see for herself and Gina did the same for EJ. I love their story so much. In season one they had their whole scheme together and they were like frenemies. Then towards the end they became friends around the time he bought Gina a plane ticket so she could be part of the show. Their growth in season two is just fantastic. Seeing EJ and Gina’s friendship strengthen and then turn into feelings for each other is just so special to me. Now in season three they are finally together. I don’t want that to be messed up. Their development started since season one and it’s just been a lovely thing to see. We have barely seen them as a couple. I don’t want to loose them. I do have faith through. I’m just praying EJ and Gina will be okay. They’ve gone through so much and deserve each other and their happy ending. I hope this made sense. I’m not the best at typing out my thoughts.

He wanted someone to vent and rant to, and since Nini wasn’t talking to him at the time he went to Gina. Whenever he reached out to her first, it was to vent and not because he liked her in any romantic way (she liked him ofc, and got her hopes up each time he reached out, and got disappointed that he was simply only talking to her because he wanted to vent and not for HER, if that makes sense). He always expected her to care about him and to be there for him even when he couldn’t even address her crush on him or anything like that. She learned that and that’s why she got angry at him. EJ on the other hand was different, he did the smallest things for her simply because he cared about her and never expected anything back. He just did those gestures (the granola bar ON TOP OF already coming to pick her up, the plane tickets, and everything else) because he’s a good guy who cares about and loves her, and she saw that goodness in him. He never did those things because he wanted to win her over or impress her. She understood that. This can be seen with the famous “how are you feeling” scene at the Quinceañero. That’s what set EJ apart from Ricky. Like you said, Portwell brought out the best in each other and most of their season 2 development (especially for EJ) was because of their vulnerability, trust, and friendship with each other. EJ gave her everything, including having her stay in the place that was starting to feel like home for her, just because he’s a good guy who cares about her and loves her. Gina was the one who saw the good in him when no one else did, not even him. She gave him a chance when no one did and helped him turn into a new EJ that wasn’t haunted by his mistakes. She accepted him for who he was, despite his flaws, and he did the same. They leaned on each other and opened up to each other, and it was beautiful to watch. They’re similar but different, and so dynamic in the best way. They worked really well together. They weren’t like Rini - they didn’t miscommunicate except once at the end of s2, and they built their friendship and continuously deepened it through vulnerability and trust, which makes it even weirder how their semester-long trusting relationship got halted simply after 2 weeks of bad communication. If it was Rini I’d buy it, since they’d miscommunicated from the start. Portwell wasn’t like that so it’s just weird. It’s also just weird that Rina happened so quickly. Ricky dated Nini, broke up with her, then dated Lily, broke up with her and then immediately is seen jealous of EJ because of Gina. There was no indication of Rina even hanging out between him dating Lily and then him being jealous. Gina was completely over Ricky after season 2. She never got the chance to love Ricky, she really only liked him and was infatuated with him. EJ and Gina had the entire second semester together and they loved each other, no doubt in my mind. so it’s just so dramatic and stupid that they’d make another love triangle consisting of the exact same guys, and that now two girls have dumped EJ for Ricky (within one year, no less). As for EJ, he especially needs an apology. His characterization was the best, he’s literally a sweetheart. He went into the summer just wanting a simple and relaxing summer with his friends before college yet instead was thrust into the director’s chair, something new and different and especially in his case, pressuring. He had the best of intentions for hyper-focusing on the musical: to prove to his dad he’s not a failure, to make sure Gina had a great summer camp experience especially her experience being the lead in the musical, and to ultimately stay in Salt Lake. I can’t blame him for losing his mind over that stress and pressure. Gina knew how pressured he felt with his dad, and she understood his problems more than anyone, but yet she never tried to help him direct or organize things - which definitely felt out of character for her. In fact, no one tried helping him. He was struggling by himself. Yes, ofc he could have handled his situation better, but still. Sorry for the very very long reply, I just needed to rant I guess lol

season 2?? Season 2 was where EJ was really fleshed out and developed. He and Nini separated, which he was fine with and literally acknowledged that it would help him grow. We learned that he’s incredibly sweet and considerate, and that he feels pressured by his dad, that his cheating nature in season 1 stems from his dad, and that he wants to change that. We learned so much about him and actually was probably the best season for EJ in my opinion. It was season 3 that backtracked all of his development to make him into this bad guy that never cared about Gina - which is definitely not true, he cared so much that he was hyper focused on the musical to help Gina have a good time as a lead and so he could stay in Salt Lake with her. He was incredibly stressed in s3 and no one helped him lighten that burden.

Season 2 was awful. EJ deserves better.

I loved it
season 2?? Season 2 was where EJ was really fleshed out and developed. He and Nini separated, which he was fine with and literally acknowledged that it would help him grow. We learned that he’s incredibly sweet and considerate, and that he feels pressured by his dad, that his cheating nature in season 1 stems from his dad, and that he wants to change that. We learned so much about him and actually was probably the best season for EJ in my opinion. It was season 3 that backtracked all of his development to make him into this bad guy that never cared about Gina - which is definitely not true, he cared so much that he was hyper focused on the musical to help Gina have a good time as a lead and so he could stay in Salt Lake with her. He was incredibly stressed in s3 and no one helped him lighten that burden.
