I tuned out of mainstream pop around 2017. Pulling me back in like giving a medieval peasant pop rocks. This stuff is wild, thank you for bringing attention to it!!!
I've been noticing this pattern too, just thought it was me. I always linked it to the general state of the country, vs. solely economic reasons. It became undeniable when the song "Happy" by Pharrell Williams was getting spammed everywhere while mass shootings and mass protests were on a sharp rise. Music is used as propaganda to help aid in "keeping the sleeping dragons asleep." You have to listen to corporate pop with a sharp ear for government oppression while trying to not get hooked at the ears by some sweet melody and the voice of a siren.
I did a whole essay on recession pop for english last year, it’s so interesting to notice the trends behind it!! I can’t say I’m happy that the world is going to shit but I AM happy to have good music again LOL
Kesha still after all that kept making musing she released her new album rainbow in 2017 then gag order recently. Now she is writing and producing songs from her heart and for herself, she said music is a huge part of her that she can't let go its her voice when she was banned from producing new songs (during the legal battle) she said "its as if my voice was stolen from me". And guess what i love her each and every song and album, i also fogot to mention highroad that she released in 2020
I feel like this tend can totally be traced not just to bad economic times; but hard times in general. Some of the most iconic, timeless songs come from difficult eras like: the Great Depression (30s) Vietnam War (60s) the economic and social strife (90s) and of course the massive political divide, and economic inequality of now. Ironically it seems like every 25 to 30 years the cycle repeats 🔁

1:48 Not me starting to skip forward because I thought you were gonna plug an ad 😅
We are post lockdown not post pandemic
So happy that this finally happened. I'd take this stuff any day over the sad, depressing ballads that weve been getting
Flo Rida was what did it for me. That man and Kesha released some BANGERS
Joyride by Kesha makes me disregard the posted speed limit
I've been noticing this pattern too, just thought it was me. I always linked it to the general state of the country, vs. solely economic reasons. It became undeniable when the song "Happy" by Pharrell Williams was getting spammed everywhere while mass shootings and mass protests were on a sharp rise. Music is used as propaganda to help aid in "keeping the sleeping dragons asleep." You have to listen to corporate pop with a sharp ear for government oppression while trying to not get hooked at the ears by some sweet melody and the voice of a siren.
Thanks for the rec! I know I’m gonna be listening to No Hands on repeat 🤩🤩
I did a whole essay on recession pop for english last year, it’s so interesting to notice the trends behind it!! I can’t say I’m happy that the world is going to shit but I AM happy to have good music again LOL
The special shoutout on Gaga.
I saw Joey Valence & Brae and I had to click
I knew the neo joke was coming and I still did a chuckle
PEAK MUSIC IS BACK!
I haven't been obcessed with a pop artist for the longest time and somehow Chappel did it for me
Kesha still after all that kept making musing she released her new album rainbow in 2017 then gag order recently. Now she is writing and producing songs from her heart and for herself, she said music is a huge part of her that she can't let go its her voice when she was banned from producing new songs (during the legal battle) she said "its as if my voice was stolen from me". And guess what i love her each and every song and album, i also fogot to mention highroad that she released in 2020
Key Perry has been dropping the ball for a while now. she also supports Israel in this time of them committing geocode of the Palestinian people.
that's awful oh my god. and her rep stoops lower
You look like the drummer for Rage Against the Machine.
Sam smith coming back was the biggest mistake. Look what they did to our girl Kim Petras
I feel like this tend can totally be traced not just to bad economic times; but hard times in general.
Some of the most iconic, timeless songs come from difficult eras like:
the Great Depression (30s)
Vietnam War (60s)
the economic and social strife (90s)
and of course the massive political divide, and economic inequality of now.
Ironically it seems like every 25 to 30 years the cycle repeats 🔁
I was so relieved when I finally heard that “dale”
As a pop girly, I LOVE Joyride by Kesha
this is the same reason i got really into one direction in 2017 and kpop in 2021. fight off the depression with POP MUSIC
THIS video was a BANGER 💥💥💥
THANK YOU!
kesha, chappell, charli and so many others are just KILLING IT
This video is missing a random rap verse.
Ke$ha made recession pop, and now she's bringing it back!
recession pop is a more widespread version of what caused gerard way to start MCR
no because i was literally shocked when i came across the revelation that i ACTUALLY liked espresso. like… it’s so pop-y and mainstream? but it was so good…
I've been loving Joey & Brae since "punk tactics" blew up. My fav songs are (DELINQUENT , HOOLIGANG , and Like What)!
Honestly all of those are fucking bangers
Joyride is fucking awesome. The new Katy Perry song is so fucking awful. I'd love it if I never hear that song again.
thanks to you mentioning hyperpop, i checked it out on spotify and im never going back, that shit is fking awesome
Why is this so accurate 😂 back in 2008-2009 I was able to cope with the recession by watching music videos and in 2024 music is still helping my mental health. Some things change that they remain the same.
I started high school in 2008. So recession pop was part of my most formative years.
Im a little embaressed that all the music mentioned i have on repeat for months 😅 i havent heard of joey valence and brae though i will have to check them out!
This aged well
Can we please get a "There's something wrong with the world, let's rage against it!" rock renaissance all fucking ready?!!!
artist are starting to make songs like rent is due
This video made me realize why I love the song “I like the way you kiss me” by Artemis. It definitely gives recession pop.
Ngl, the beat of that Katy Perry song hits hard. Idc for the lyrics, but the song is a banger for the beat.
Oh good other old genres are coming back which means when i bring '00s emo back it wont be weird
FINALLY i felt like spongebob in sandy's dome drying up and crumbling into a fine dust
BRO I SO HAPPY YOU MENTION JOEY I LOVE HIS STUFF
