“…constructive and well intentioned criticism can be the most difficult to swallow bc you can’t just brush it off as hate” is such a good, well worded piece of advice
I agree with what you're saying about constructive criticism however a lot of these people were just being mean they could have given the guy real advice instead of just bashing him think about if you wrote your first song and we're already shy about releasing it or uncertain of yourself and then all these people started bashing you this is the type of thing that drives people to commit suicide I know it sounds like a stupid thing to do that over but it has happened in young people when their community turns on them especially for something so dumb
@@matthewpitre8159 and that is why young people shouldn't be given the tools to create this big communities around them, they're not yet ready to face these kind of consequences
@@skizzpulse then tell me why you think that young people, who can't yet discern good from bad and with a still undeveloped fragile personality, should be given platforms with millions of followers who criticize them too harshly and can potentially expose them to real threat
I know obviously this is directed at a very specific person, but that "You can't change their mind by overexplaining why you do something" is some really good advice I feel like I need to take to heart that I've never heard from anyone before.
I once tried defending a song artist that my friend said sucked and immediately when I started to defend the artist, she said, "I'm not in the mood" I was just making a claim and she was hating on me for no reason. I literally started crying afterward, trying to figure out what I did wrong.
@@HandleTakenYA You don't have to justify your likes or interests to other people. If your friend thinks a song/artist you like sucks, that's okay and you shouldn't try to convince them that they're wrong; they have a right to have an opinion. Now if they're actively trying to put you down by making fun of your tastes or trying to seem superior, the best thing you can do is not give a f. Do YOU like it? Then what matters what your friend thinks? You can live your life trying to justify all your tastes to bitter people who find pleasure in hating on things, or you can just ignore them and keep on gleefully consuming your interests, no matter how "objectively bad" or "good" they are
no fr and also it applies to others as well like if someone has a really terrible personality and you try to over-explain to them why its wrong they wont ever listen to you. im too defensive bc whenever someone tries to correct me i legit always yap about how what I did wasn't wrong and I think i really needed to hear that advice
I'm so glad I'm not the only one 😭😭 other people were talking about how terrible it was to compare him to MGK and i agreed as if I wasn't cackling at the joke for 3 minutes 💀 i thought it was gonna be about the emo girl song too lmao
Honestly, I think 99% of the hate happened because he started the tiktok by saying "did I just write the next emo punk anthem?" or whatever. The hive mind had already sharpened their knives before he sang the first note.
I really like this comment. Not to sound old fashioned, but it really goes to show how important first introductions are. Poor guy just made some bad decisions when it came to the promotion of his music.
Not gonna lie, when I read “did I just write the next emo punk anthem?” I did feel like an immediate denial coming. His song would have had to be amazing to live up to that.
I agree but I think if he'd have dropped the most insane fire anyone had ever heard people might've actually been into it. I have seen people do that kind of thing and then show me something awesome and I've been excited to give credit where it's due. I think, like another comment said, it's about the amount of hype he built for such a low quality song. The song itself isn't even the worst in the world. It's not great and I don't enjoy it but some of the melodic intervals are at least interesting and I could see someone liking it. But he started off being kind of annoying with that question and then didn't shock people with the high quality of it lol
Yea I agree. Before I even heard it was absolutely expecting to dislike the song. It just feels a bit arrogant to claim smth like that, whether its true or not.
this video is the beginning of Danny's arc as a "social media dad." years from now, when hundreds of thousands of people are regularly seeking social media advice from Danny, they'll look back on this video as the inception of an era.
I think one of the big things is his declaration that it's going to be successful before playing that. That primes your alt crowd to immediately be suspicious. The song isn't actually bad, it's just not a hit.
Yeah, especially with the alt crowd, theres often some innate importance placed on the fact that the music doesnt "exist to be popular". That's not a good thing, thats not a bad thing, it just is. Sometimes you end up with a bunch of people "gatekeeping" their favorite bands because they don't want them to get mainstream, but I think at it's core it's about wanting music to be kind of its own and authentic. Marketing a song to that community by going "this is gonna be a HIT!" is not exactly thought out..
@@imphie Nope, it's definitely an inhaler. It's a parody of the old woman with inhaler poster that a lot of UA-camrs used to have (for example MrBeast). He talks about the original poster in "The weird side of Amazon 2" and he talks about the fact people thinks he's drinking milk in "redecorating my office"
The music mostly isn't that bad, it's the framing of "this is the next big thing" combined with the quirky overexagerated acting and aesthetic (like how there are 5 different sound effects when he starts explaining how lyrics work) that make this unlikeable. It gives off the vibe of trying waaaaaaaay too hard and the over the top acting/expressions feel like a kids TV show
Everyone is trying to go viral/get their 15 seconds of fame, it's a product of our current economy. I don't know how long he's been on social media or how much it takes up of his life but when you see the same thing over and over again it's hard not to join in.
i really appreciate how danny gives so much empathy to people he covers. the earnest advice is really refreshing to see rather than just plainly making fun of someone
This is sad. He is so proud of his song and people are bullying him. It takes a long time and a lot of experience to learn how to present yourself online. He didn't do anything wrong, he just didn't present himself well.
Saying you made "the next anthem" is super arrogant. I don't blame people for reacting negatively. If he just posted the song with comment no one would have cared
@@heavenonearth3316 doesnt mean they deserve it, but you have to be aware that off arrogant and cocky, people are going to dislike you immediately, and that shapes the way people will interact with your brand/product. because thats what this is, he is posting as an artist, as a musician rather than a regular person and that can come with heavy and harsh criticism.
@@candylide unhelpful criticism, but criticism nonetheless. i can say "this fuckin sucks" and thats criticism. "this sounds terrible" "would be better on mute" its all harsh, pretty mean criticism. doesnt have to be a detailed breakdown of that makes it bad
I've actually unfollowed some people before because they wouldn't stop responding to their haters in a way that just felt like a huge waste of time and energy. I think you're spot on in saying that a creator like this can't spread a message of not caring about what others think while also trying to change people's minds. Also, I love the respectful tone of this video - that's something I love about your commentary. Entertaining, but always pretty fair and never needlessly mean.
I totally get why you would unfollow them bc like as a fan it also kind of sucks to constantly see someone responding to haters rather than responding to fan/followers or even just making content that made you get followers in the first place
"Entertaining, but always pretty fair and never needlessly mean." Can we refer to the Drew Gooden, Danny Gonzalez, Eddy Burback commentary era as the post-Leafy era?
Great, constructive vid! I was surprised no one brought it up in the TikTok comments, but the song clip he’s using is eerily similar to the chorus of ”Kings & Queens” by Thirty Seconds To Mars, with ”Kings & Queens” being changed to ”princes & princesses”. Even if that’s a reference on purpose it’s too close for comfort. As you said, the rest of the song is also better! He’s got great potential for sure.
I love the legitimate criticism and advice you give him. It's good advice for anyone who wants to start making content as well. You're always so respectful to people as well, even when they really do deserve the criticism. I look up to you so much as someone who wants to be a creator, and also just as someone who wants to be a good person. Thanks, Danny.
I was really heavy in the pop punk scene in high school and this guy reminds me of a lot of the people I used to hang out with. The internal conflict of not caring about fitting in with the mainstream and desperately wanting the approval of the pop punk/emo community is a huge part of the culture and if you're not immediately beloved and accepted within the community, it's easy to fall into this sort of cringe defensiveness. I feel like that's a little true for every creator, but it's a huge issue in the pop punk community / music scene
I don’t know specifically about pop punk but I’ve seen this a lot too with other groups and made me feel bad for him. I’m sure he hoped he would be able to fit into this niche group he wanted to be a part of (maybe after not feeling accepted by the majority) but he ended up being treated like an outsider. Hopefully something good will come of this for him.
THIS. Punk is supposed to be about bucking the mainstream, being weird and coming as you are, but then within THAT group you have to conform to what everyone agrees is acceptable weirdness or you become even more hated. It’s pretty messed up. Realizing you don’t fit into the norm, thinking you might have found a group of people who feel the same as you, finally letting your guard down and exposing your weirdness to that group - only to then be told you’re the wrong kind of weird.. fuck man.
Danny being honest but not needlessly cruel is such a nice thing to see, I feel like a lot of people who focus on commentary try too hard to justify their criticism instead of keeping a fair balance and end up being a bit excessive in an attempt to overcompensate. Good video, hopefully this dude can learn from it. (I think the most important thing to learn from these days is the point about giving people a reaction. Even smaller artists I follow run into this problem where they try to be accommodating and instead people use it as opportunity to dogpile accusations or guilt them into only creating content that person wants to see.)
I feel that starting that tiktok with “is this the next emo anthem” was the biggest mistake. Any bold statements like that and the like of “if you like MCR you’ll love my band” are destined to not work with the emo crowd. The alternative scene was born out of not liking what everyone else likes, not being who everyone else is, by not fitting in so making it obvious that we don’t fit in. Tell us you made a song you think we might enjoy, that represents your view on the scene. That’ll get way more positive attention. Sure people can be pricks and you’ll never escape the negative comments but I believe there would be way less if it was done a different way
Calling it "emo punk" was stupid too lol. It was neither. It just pop radio rock with Hot Topic apparel. Doesn't mean it can't be good but it is a bad idea to not even know what genre you made.
I totally agree with you, on a personal level also because my music taste is so specific, I’ll like one band but not the one that sounds super similar because, to me it’s the song that matters and if I like it, I might like your band, but maybe not
"Shirt" and "shit" is a slant rhyme. An example of a perfect rhyme is "shirt" and "skirt". Thank you for coming to my TED talk (probably from 9th grade English)
I think the reason he's getting way more hate than he should is cause he's targetting a subculture that's really big on gatekeeping (coming from someone who was on the receiving end). I haven't visited his profile but I'm honestly so sure that a lot of the people hating on him are the same people that would ask you to name three songs if they saw you wearing a shirt from a rock band Edit: didn't expect a lot of people to agree with me lmao
I think it's weird how I see people go for the fashion specifically when it comes to punk, and use "Disney channel" as like, their go to insult. What if he (and others like him) just genuinely like that take on the style? I don't get why it's deemed like, "not punk enough".
"Did I just reach meme status?" "Did I just compose the new emo anthem?" He's a bit too ahead of himself.. When I see people chase fame with even a hint of desperation it always makes me uncomfortable
hes always been like that. thinks hes gods gift to the world and to women. hes probably desperate to make it on tiktok cause no one in town will book him cause of him being an enormous creep
i really respect danny for actually trying to understand this guy and help him, not just completely hating on him like everone else. this is one of the reasons you're my favorite youtuber!
I like this video so much. Just the message of being more tolerate to people trying to express themselves through their art and Danny’s support to this dude, who btw doesn’t seem to be a bad person, is just nice and cheerful. Thank you
Same! I like places with this ambiance where everyone is encouraged to flourish and it's cool that his videos are both oasis in places that can be more aggressive, and showing us ways to consider things that we can use to expand the vibe around us.
agreed! i really appreciate danny's tone in this video. he pokes fun but commends the guy for expressing himself and offers helpful advice/critiques, while also pointing out how wrong the crowd is for being SUPER unnecessarily mean. i also love that he points out the irony in the generic responses LOL
His music is pretty much on par with older “generic” emo music lol. I can 100% imagine early 2000’s emo and scene kids rocking out to this Also GODDAMN the acoustic version genuinely is something I’d listen to, he’s skilled on the guitar
Watching again this a few months later, and I just wanna let everyone know that Greg did a great job of filling Andy's comments with positivity and support, and the Greg army is strangling out the hateful comments. Im proud of you Greg.
Honestly I really feel bad for this guy. He seems to really be proud of the art he puts out there and I can totally respect that. As a very small artist myself, I know how fucking heartbreaking it'd be to put something out there that you're really proud of only to get that level of hate. It's honestly a pretty scary thought, and I really hope it's something that never happens to me.
Right.. Being an artist who had formal education and been around artists (beginners and professional when I'm lucky- and of course having your works criticized) ik how heartbreaking it is when your art was being shitted on. Which is why I like to fond good things even on art thats not my taste, or even on newer beginner artists. Thats what makes them go forward and be better, if the creator is neutral, or kind, just find something to make them feel proud of their works, after all, it still takes a lot of time, and there are tons of love poured into it. Effort and love is part of being an artist
The amount of hate he got was absolutely insane. I’m surprised he’s managing to get past it. That would definitely absolutely destroy me. I’m very sensitive and even one rude comment makes me upset so nevermind thousands. I feel bad for him and I hope he’s doing ok.
i have no idea if people are still watching this video, but ill throw it out there, anndy still remembers just how nice the reaction to his music was after this. got one of his posts on my instagram, saw that it had plenty of hate comments (unsurprising for the platform) and said 'guys did we learn nothing from danny gonzalez', and his response was to say that i was truly greg. sounds silly, i know, but its really sweet to know the effect gregs had on him.
i think the biggest problem with the guy's music is he seems like a rhythm guitarist, the type that learned music through singing over acoustic guitar. which is great! but you cant always just take something that sounds good with acoustic guitar and vocals, slam it out on electric, and then sing louder and hope it works. ill bet you ANYTHING he composes on acoustic guitar, relying on his more practiced skills. i do that too, but it's not exactly easy to write electric guitar pieces with an acoustic instrument. that acoustic ballad version of the song is great because the guitar and vocals work together to create a flow. in the electric one, hes using power chords, and longer notes, and he doesnt change the vocals. it just creates an awkward mismatch and it makes it sound like he's singing off tempo. just one notch better at making music, like danny said, and this guy would have it in the bag! he's just missing the mark a little bit on the genre and on a consistent genre, instrument to instrument.
Never heard about this until now and I just listened to it. It sounds like Kings and Queens by 30 Seconds to Mars if it were watered down, filtered to the bare bones of lyrical writing, and also sung by Shane Dawson. In fact the choruses almost seems identical in melody if you listen to them multiple times. Which isn’t bad per se, he just needs to develop a bit more of his own sound that fits his vocals in a better way.
Lol just seeing this comment! I felt like no one else noticed the similarities to Thirty Seconds to Mars’ song. Glad to know I’m not the only one who caught that lol.
I was just about to comment saying the same thing, especially the "We are the princes and princesses of..." being almost exactly the same as Thirty Seconds to Mars' "We are the kings and queens of..." down to having nearly the same melody. Pretty sure that was a big part of his downfall, making a song trying to emulate an another already popular song (even if he didn't consciously mean to) instead of making music that was truly "his".
I feel like if he sat down and really thought about it he could write a decent song. My main problem with this song is that you can tell he is trying way too hard to sound emo while singing. Which is why the acoustic version sounded better imo.
"Wouldn't wanna introduce young people to pop punk" being said sarcastically is actually the peak of comedy, considering the reputation pop punk bands actually get when it comes to young people
Oh you're right!!XD Maybe because it mentions princes and princesses the imagined ages are primary school ages? That would make it make more sense because if the song's about how life isn't as great as it was during childhood being a young person just starting to grow up (I'm assuming his audience includes teenagers) is the time during which a lot of people start to learn more about the grey areas of the world and how nothing is so cookie-cutter and great as you once thought it to be.
Man even if he is just doing satire or a parody, he’s got so much more passion and effort than 90% of anyone else on Tik Tok. The girl who duetted with him literally just sat with her phone right up to her face and said “no”. No effort or talent to do that. Just being really rude for no reason. I respect this guy
literally there's people with 0 talent and a lack of passion for what they do (cough, lil huddy) that go to huge festivals just because some 12 year olds liked them and thought they were hot. like that's the majority of what tiktok "famous" people have - and then there's the people who may not be that skilled but give a crap about what they do and they're bullied endlessly because their first attempt wasn't good
Even then, as a huge pop punk fan and emo kid since 2009, his music was FUN! That's what should matter! Plus I think that since "scene" died out, none of the TikTok Teens recognize that his music is a mix of scene and pop punk - scene being known for being ridiculous and, again, fun
I agree. It’s really sad and unfair that her 3 second long video is getting thousands more likes than his which actually could have taken him hours/days/ weeks to work on. Tik tok praises apathy and mental weakness. I’m so worried about this generation.
yeah. bet 90% of the people parroting the same baseline insults have never picked up an instrument in their lives. not saying you need to be a trained musician to differentiate good and bad music, but it is ironic that a bunch of non musicians think they have the authority to gatekeep music.
It's like someone showing off a piece of art they've just finished with the caption of "So uh, did I just make the next Mona Lisa or what!" It does not matter how good the art is, there's no way it can live up to that sort of comparison and people are more likely to disagree just because it comes of as pretentious, no matter whether they would've liked it otherwise.
"Unrelease this" cracked me up (the first time), but if I put out some art and got that I think I'd yeet myself out of a plane. I don't think a lot of people think about how disproportionate it is to rag on him this hard for so little. They just saw him feeling himself and his song and decided to knock him down. ALSO. The culture of just ruthlessly knocking on people or cringing at them is so exhaustingly negative and it's also like... discouraging anyone from trying things or sharing them if they can't be instantly popular or monetized or perfect beyond reproach. Very cool to see a more down to earth and chill commentary
i think we can all agree that a lot of that is 1.) hive mind behavior and 2.) people are so disconnected and hide behind the anonymity of the internet that they just say whatever they want without real commentary.
The response did go pretty insane with everything, but I do think that him starting out the original song with "did I just write the next emo anthem" was truly jumping the gun to the point of no return. He didn't deserve to be completely hated on, but I don't disagree with the comments that sort of poke fun at the fact that it isn't very good.
If I had released I song I was really proud of and then got a shit ton of hate for it like him I would honestly felt so terrible. Like props on him for not letting it get to him too much. I think it would of definitely made me seriously depressed and I would of cried a lot. Like there was so much rude comments at him, it’s insane. And just because they didn’t like his song?
As a former emo teenager, now emo adult, this dude looks and sounds like he was frozen inside a hot topic since 2004 and someone accidentally thawed him out
So his hook of "we were the princes and princesses" sounds incredibly similar melodically to the *30STM* song Kings and Queens containing the lyrics "We were the kings and queens..." I am 100% confident he's a parody cause that's too on the nose Edit: Either that or he's drawing WAY too much inspiration from an 11 year old song lol
I feel like if he had released this 10/15 years ago, he would have had a much bigger fan base because it's not so out of place for that time period as it is now. Like it's not awful, it's just not as good as the hype he tried to create which is part of why people are reacting negatively. I'm sure if Andy kept working on his style he'd eventually find more of an audience that digs it
This is a well meaning comment and I don't want to be apart of a crowd that wants to tear some one down for his art but I really don't think this song would fit in that well back then either.
Yeah, I could see this guy getting popular in 2012ish, and based on his apparent age and aesthetic, I have to assume that's the time period that had the most impact on him. Problem is, it seems like he just froze in that era.
This would not fit in with pop punk/emo 10-15 years ago. This song is a quintessential example as to why modern pop punk isn't anywhere close to being as good as pop punk in the 90s/2000's.
its because the charm of this kind of music is BECAUSE its outdated. its the classic and for its time it was big! (this isnt hateful btw just what i think is the reason)
i don't think he would have gotten as much hate if he hadn't declared the song "the next emo anthem." That stuff needs to happen naturally and agreed on by the community as a whole, this is just like the Trampstamps trying to prove they deserve punk clout
Okay but who even considers themselves emo now. Isn’t it all e-girls/boys and shit? Goth maybe, that sure stuck, but I don’t think anyone considers emo to be a thing anymore. Like I just mean who is around to give a crap what this one Tiktoker calls his song? No hate to anyone who still calls themselves emo, I just thought it was an outdated subculture now.
Tbh I'm annoy about him claiming it's "the next emo anthem" like dude doesn't even have a fan base yet and he seems to make such a huge claim. Ofc people are gonna have insanely high expectations and if his brave enough to make such bold claim he should be brave enough to take the hate/criticism it gets. Especially compare to how good actual "emo anthem" are like mother mother, choke, set it off, etc compare to his songs. He wants to be unique but it sounds like a mess, the point of a good song isn't to be unique it's to sound good. If it's main goal is just to stand out then it's not gonna be good. Jack stauber one example of a unique song that sounds good
I think a big part is that he’s pushing the one song as if he’s an established artist with a new single, as opposed to an enthusiastic unsigned artist. If he released TikToks about his process of writing and recording *other* songs, it wouldn’t come across as so defensive, and he could actually seem to progress as a creator. Going for a “hey, what do you think of this new chorus/lyric/idea” would allow for him to react to feedback, as opposed to spending his time trying to argue about the qualities of his finished song.
Ugh. I’m so torn. On the one hand, I definitely feel bad for the dude because assholes on the internet _love_ to take shit waaaay too far. And he most certainly hasn’t done anything to deserve *any* genuine hate. _However,_ dude straight up *asked* everyone if he’d written a classic. Which is a _hella_ bold move. (Especially considering, in _my personal_ opinion, the song’s pretty rough.) So, yeah, he kinda got what he asked for? (A bit too much to the extreme though, that’s for sure!) Hopefully this guy sees Danny’s video (Which I’m *sure* that he will!) and takes his advice to heart as they’re some pretty solid pointers! Best of luck, my dude!
seriously, dude set himself up for failure. obviously he doesn’t deserve the excessive hate but he set expectations up way too high for a song that really doesn’t stand on its own stylistically? i feel like he has potential, but he needs room to grow before he can call any of his songs an anthem. i wish him the best of luck, though.
He doesn’t even seem old enough to be saying he was in any way part of these “glory days” he’s like 23 at the most which would mean he was single digit age at the time emo and pop punk were at their peak in the 2000s.
Those commentors didn't take it too far. They weren't harassing or making fun of him personally, they were just saying stuff like, "Dude, take this trash." Which is the most run of the mill internet comment.
I agree. People always find the next 'town fool' to throw tomatoes at, and while his music isn't really all that good, some people need to be a little objective about it too. It's not the worst thing in the world lol
@@tupaclives5848 he looks kinda old to me tbh. like late 20s. especially if he worked as a bartender 6 years ago, meaning if he was in his early 20s he'd be like 16-18 then lmao.
I'm so glad Danny didn't just blindly roast this dude like everyone else. Sure, this song is not very good, but it's not THAT bad. Besides, we all gotta start somewhere, and it actually seems he put some effort into it.
I've grown up on commentary youtube, and honestly, I am so happy it's taking such a positive and lighthearted turn as we all get a little older. I think the community has grown with the genre and this vid is a really good example of how you can be funny while not being mean.
Right! I think a lot of people have seen how soul sucking and damaging the dog piles and "joking" insults can be, and are just coming to a more empathetic place where the vibe is like... you do you, man. I think a lot of people didn't like what they were becoming either. The toxicity also means no one really feels safe expressing themselves or sharing or growing, so it's also suffocating and discouraging to be around.
The biggest mistake he could've ever done was say "Did I make the newest emo anthem?" because it immediately got himself to be compared to the likes of MCR or PaTD and have his starting song be compared to The Black Parade, which... No, nothing can really be compared to that album nor its most infamous song. It's not just because the song feels like it's going off of scene music rather than emo punk rock, it's also because it's not... unique? Or out there, in terms of the emo nor scene genres. I think he definitely has opportunity. If he were to go back to his laid-back and grounded self and made his own style, I think he'll be able to find his own community. I will say, though, TikTok is very prone to harassing people and repeating jokes that aren't funny after the first time. I'm not surprised that happened.
I think this guy’s song isn’t bad but I wouldn’t say it’s good either. It could use some work but it definitely doesn’t deserve the amount of hate it has been receiving.
literally just sounds like basic pop punk. Like someone who wants to make it but never really studies the genre. Just throws some cliche lyrics over 2-3 chords. Bro just needs to follow his own mind and creativity.
@@dirtysploof5890 Exactly. His music isn’t necessarily bad, he just needs to branch out on the chords and music and get a little more creative with his lyrics.
@@SnowLily123 Also, this genre just may not be for someone like him. The whole point of punk imo is totally not giving a fuck, it doesnt even have to be good sounding music necessarily (im talking more about noise groups). You just need the energy and individuality
Oh fucking absolutely. People who unironically listen to 100 gecks would jam to this in a more hyperpop style. I think I'm people. Seriously though, I think shooting for pop punk wasn't what he should have went for. Maybe some sort of hybrid of the two?? hyperpop punk???
What about his super early 2000’s punk guitar riffs make you think he would do well in heavy auto tuned hyperpop. Y’all gotta stop with the fake nice shit hah this dude isn’t like some horrible musician but he’s just an average dude who likes to make music he grew up on. “He would do reeeeeally fucking well in the hyperpop genre” hahahahahha man I wanna puke reading that hahahaha ugh go to sleep after that bullshit cucky Danny simp comment
Honestly the acoustic version sounds like a song middle school me would've genuinely listened to while drawing and writing on Wattpad. Which means I would probably still listen to it every now again now. The acoustic version does genuinely sound good, but its just a little out of the style for something released now a days
the biggest mistake was the "did i just make the new emo anthem?", that immediately raises the standards of what to come next and by failing to live up to those expectations hes bound to get a more of a negative response than if he hadnt done that
i think starting by going "hey i wrote this pop punk song, here it is" and then just playing it without the weird stage persona just in his bedroom, it would be better.
as an ex/old emo person who shopped only at hot topic, etc, this sounds exactly like something we would’ve listened to. we like the 2010s pop punk music cause of nostalgia, it’s not like it was incredible music
Yikes, in 2010 I was listening to A Day to Remember What Separates Me From You not this generic mess even the year after we had The Story so Far’s Debut.
@@GrayWoIf those bands i mentioned were always pop punk. But i think around 2010 or before idr is when they got really poppy with their sound. I was already kind of out of them in like 2005 and by 2010 listening to saosin, adtr, killswitch, and emarosa.
When musicians on TikTok start a video by saying “Did I just write the next ______ anthem?” Or “Did I just make up a new genre?” They have practically invited everyone to viciously humble them. I cannot imagine a faster way to get everyone rooting against you
“Did I just write the worst song to ever exist and the government is now on their way to my house to arrest me for my crimes against humanity?” might be a little better
there's smth so heartwarming about going to the music video or the audio and finding so many gregs leaving positive feedback... i really really like this community and i think it's largely due to how positive danny himself is that he's able to nurture this community.
Why this is different- because you're a youtube comedian, not a bully, Danny. There is a line and it's always been clear to me that you genuinely keep that in mind. I hope he does see this video.
@@Hunter-wv4ui I think that was their point - that Danny’s not a bully (so, nobody is calling him one). He’s a UA-cam commentary comedian. The people relentlessly harping on this dude are the bullies, while Danny is genuinely critiquing and being kind. And that’s “why it’s different”
@@Hunter-wv4ui nobody, it’s just that a lot of the people attacking this guy are just being mean. Cyber bullying is so common that a lot of online content creators and influencers can’t distinguish between hate and genuine constructive criticism.
@@Hunter-wv4ui There are always people who accuse youtubers like him of being "cyber bullies" (think Cody Ko and Jake Paul), but I'm not aware of anyone saying that specifically to Danny. Danny made a sort of self-deprecating remark in the video about "making fun of people" every week and not knowing why this is different, just that it felt different.
Another piece of criticism I would give him is that he needs to change the way he styled that music video of his if he wants people to stop calling his song kids' music. The animation/editing is good, but the bright-colored paper cutout style makes it look very much like something that would be played at a 5th-grader's birthday party in a bowling alley. It doesn't even need to be animated. The song is very upbeat, so I would imagine a darker setting, like a rave or something, might give it that darker emo tone he seems to want.
@@leoseguin5761 I'm not emo-scene, so I don't really know what that style entails. If it's perfectly acceptable in that community, cool! I'm just saying that to me at least, it seems sort of watered down and family-friendly.
Heyy Danny! Greg here.. I just want to tell you I appreciate what a gentleman you are and to make a video trying to help out someone who has a lot of hate and bullying is a great role model for the kids watching your videos, such as my sons!.... looking for the good in every person is such a great feeling! Everyone has their own quirks, of course, but you are just awesome for at least sticking up for someone who clearly isn't getting much love! And giving wholesome advice as well .. you just are an amazing dude! Never chaaange!! 😁
Well ... My son is 13yo and he actually showed me Danny... And Danny isn't nearly as bad as some of the stuff on yt lol ... Also, I am only 33 yrs old myself so it's not like I'm some old lady hahaha... But yes!! We are ALL Greg's in our house 😅😅 .... If you don't get the reference then you must not be Greg! 🤷🏼♀️ lmao!
something i really appreciate about danny is that he doesn't just blindly hate on people's content, he genuinely cares about not hurting people's feelings; especially when they don't deserve it. but it's really showcased well in this video that he even tries to help people out when they're getting hated on for basically no reason. just because someone writes a song you deem to be bad it doesn't mean they did anything wrong
trying to argue that a song called 'when we were young' is supposed to be targeted to kids is wild. how would kids relate to the lyrics at all? if they imagine themselves any younger than they are, they would be remembering themselves as babies. i wish he would stop trying to defend it and just have fun writing whatever music he wants
@@stephanief5794 as someone who absolutely pretended to be an "18 year old h0e" whenever I listened to "adult themed music" as a preteen, I can agree to that sentiment
1 year later and the poor dude is still getting hated on on tiktok even though his music really isn’t that bad. Ppl just don’t like things that are different unfortunately. And of course his marketing isn’t top notch so it makes it even easier for people to find things to make fun of
I love how respectful Danny is in every single video. It doesn’t matter who he’s talking about, he will always find something nice to say about them. I loved this video and how instead of laughing at him he tried to give him some advice. You’re amazing Danny
I feel so bad for this guy, he literally did nothing wrong and is getting so much hate I hate how tiktok loves to hate on people, especially artists just because it's not perfect or how they want it, I've seen many cases of small children getting bullied for posting their drawings as if they expected a child to draw like a professional or even good, it's just a child trying to share their hobby And I know he's an adult but still, getting hate gives you anxiety unless you're so used to it like a big youtuber or someone who has experience with it. I've had someone hate on a drawing of mine, and even though that didn't make me dislike it I still felt bad about the whole situation I think the way he handled it was pretty good, he's still human after all and honestly I have nothing bad to say about him Especially being autistic I know what it's like having everything you enjoy being jugded by others and considered cringe, maybe I'm just projecting but all I see is a guy trying to have fun and share his art
no no. this dude deserves any hate he gets. I am legit shocked to see him show up in a youtube video but hes from the same city as me. we travel in the same scenes and he is an awful human being. In various ways. (Ive replied to too many comments at this point but like, I cant watch someone defend a r*pist) this POS doesnt deserve any sympathy.
honestly, i think a lot of the hate comes from the fact he thinks it might be the next emo anthem. you have to be really cocky to think one of your songs is gonna be an anthem
Not trying to pick a fight with you, because I agree with your premise- just trying to explain where the hate came from. The problem (mainly) was that he seemed to think his song was going to become "the next emo anthem", when it is so far from the emo genre. It's too bright and peppy to be an "emo" song, let alone an anthem. So he p.o.'d a bunch of very passionate people (seemingly on purpose) by, in their eyes, insulting the genre of music they liked. He was disrespectful to the emo demographic, which is why so many people got angry at him. Basically, he decided he was going to provoke a group that's not exactly known for its positive response to outsiders and posers. To quote Tony Stark, "Not a great plan." Again, not trying to start anything; there are just smarter ways to share your art that don't involve hate-baiting.
Danny, this is the exact reason why you’re one of my favourite UA-camrs. You approach topics with empathy when the subjects deserve it, and you’re never undeservedly mean or rude. Thank you ❤️
Danny - you’re AWESOME for taking the time to coach someone who is clearly working on building influencer status. And especially for taking up for him a bit while he’s being so relentlessly teased. I’d never heard of this guy, but I have to admit - I’m a pop-punk and Disney music lover, and I enjoyed the song! I just think the way he’s promoting it is a bit cringe and over-the-top. Anyways, great video as always!
As someone who was a teen emo back in the day when emo first started, I could 100% see people listening to this song back then. Doesn't mean it's particularly good, but there were a lot of emo UA-cam singers putting out this sort of music at the time. His biggest mistake was being arrogant and claiming he'd written an anthem.
This is later, but honestly I could totally see one of the late 2000s-early 2010s pop-punk darlings writing this and everyone just eating it up. Like it gives me All Time Low/Story So Far/Punk Goes Pop vibes. Also doesn't mean it's good, but middle school me would be 100% guilty of blasting it.
I was emo with my younger brother and it is like identical to a song him and I wrote together then LOL. we were like 13 and 11...... He actually got spot on for young people

I really don’t mind the song, but I think what a lot of people didn’t like was him calling it “the next emo anthem.” I think, by doing that, he attracted an audience that’s not his target audience
I think people reacting so negatively to mediocre creations is one part of why so many artists can't get over their perfectionism and just publish things. Mediocre works aren't meritless, and outright rejecting everything that's not crazy good or crazy bad is unfair to both the creator, and the people who would able to find that merit and let it resonate with them. @@HandleTakenYA You don't have to justify your likes or interests to other people. If your friend thinks a song/artist you like sucks, that's okay and you shouldn't try to convince them that they're wrong; they have a right to have an opinion.

I feel like that's a little true for every creator, but it's a huge issue in the pop punk community / music scene
this is really interesting, and it makes so much sense
Exactly!
Realizing you don’t fit into the norm, thinking you might have found a group of people who feel the same as you, finally letting your guard down and exposing your weirdness to that group - only to then be told you’re the wrong kind of weird.. fuck man.

As a very small artist myself, I know how fucking heartbreaking it'd be to put something out there that you're really proud of only to get that level of hate. It's honestly a pretty scary thought, and I really hope it's something that never happens to me.
Yes. This exactly. Aww so sad
after Danny posted this video he got a bunch of love ,he made a response thanking Danny’s audience,so that good
SAME if I got a massively bad reaction reaction to a song I was really excited about it'd crush me
i have no idea if people are still watching this video, but ill throw it out there, anndy still remembers just how nice the reaction to his music was after this. got one of his posts on my instagram, saw that it had plenty of hate comments (unsurprising for the platform) and said 'guys did we learn nothing from danny gonzalez', and his response was to say that i was truly greg.
sounds silly, i know, but its really sweet to know the effect gregs had on him.
i think the biggest problem with the guy's music is he seems like a rhythm guitarist, the type that learned music through singing over acoustic guitar. which is great! but you cant always just take something that sounds good with acoustic guitar and vocals, slam it out on electric, and then sing louder and hope it works. ill bet you ANYTHING he composes on acoustic guitar, relying on his more practiced skills. i do that too, but it's not exactly easy to write electric guitar pieces with an acoustic instrument.
that acoustic ballad version of the song is great because the guitar and vocals work together to create a flow. in the electric one, hes using power chords, and longer notes, and he doesnt change the vocals. it just creates an awkward mismatch and it makes it sound like he's singing off tempo.
just one notch better at making music, like danny said, and this guy would have it in the bag! he's just missing the mark a little bit on the genre and on a consistent genre, instrument to instrument.

I think you got it!
Good thing he is still playing music and getting better instead of letting the haters get to him
Ohhh interesting
as someone who also plays guitar and likes rock music, you literally managed to put into words what I wouldn't have been able to say myself otherwise
100% right.
I was looking to see if anyone else thought the same! Cos I know I have Kings and Queens stuck in my head 🙃
I just commented the same thing!!! Glad it's not just me.
I think he would be killing it in the 2010's, the skits felt like early youtube

Maybe because it mentions princes and princesses the imagined ages are primary school ages? That would make it make more sense because if the song's about how life isn't as great as it was during childhood being a young person just starting to grow up (I'm assuming his audience includes teenagers) is the time during which a lot of people start to learn more about the grey areas of the world and how nothing is so cookie-cutter and great as you once thought it to be.

literally there's people with 0 talent and a lack of passion for what they do (cough, lil huddy) that go to huge festivals just because some 12 year olds liked them and thought they were hot. like that's the majority of what tiktok "famous" people have - and then there's the people who may not be that skilled but give a crap about what they do and they're bullied endlessly because their first attempt wasn't good
Even then, as a huge pop punk fan and emo kid since 2009, his music was FUN! That's what should matter! Plus I think that since "scene" died out, none of the TikTok Teens recognize that his music is a mix of scene and pop punk - scene being known for being ridiculous and, again, fun

It's like someone showing off a piece of art they've just finished with the caption of "So uh, did I just make the next Mona Lisa or what!"
It does not matter how good the art is, there's no way it can live up to that sort of comparison and people are more likely to disagree just because it comes of as pretentious, no matter whether they would've liked it otherwise.
100% agree
The response did go pretty insane with everything, but I do think that him starting out the original song with "did I just write the next emo anthem" was truly jumping the gun to the point of no return. He didn't deserve to be completely hated on, but I don't disagree with the comments that sort of poke fun at the fact that it isn't very good.

This is great advice!

(A bit too much to the extreme though, that’s for sure!)
Hopefully this guy sees Danny’s video (Which I’m *sure* that he will!) and takes his advice to heart as they’re some pretty solid pointers!

Danny's specialty. Some other UA-camrs aren't as good at it as him
The biggest mistake he could've ever done was say "Did I make the newest emo anthem?" because it immediately got himself to be compared to the likes of MCR or PaTD and have his starting song be compared to The Black Parade, which...
I'm not surprised that happened.

something i really appreciate about danny is that he doesn't just blindly hate on people's content, he genuinely cares about not hurting people's feelings; especially when they don't deserve it. but it's really showcased well in this video that he even tries to help people out when they're getting hated on for basically no reason. just because someone writes a song you deem to be bad it doesn't mean they did anything wrong
You just earned my respect 🙏👍
trying to argue that a song called 'when we were young' is supposed to be targeted to kids is wild. how would kids relate to the lyrics at all? if they imagine themselves any younger than they are, they would be remembering themselves as babies. i wish he would stop trying to defend it and just have fun writing whatever music he wants
Doesnt it mean "enjoy things when we are young" (present tense)
kids love that kind of music because they like to pretend to be older than they are. trust me i was out there thinking i was an adult at 14
I mean I used to listen to dramatic emo music about relationships and breakups and I had never even kissed anyone before
@@stephanief5794 as someone who absolutely pretended to be an "18 year old h0e" whenever I listened to "adult themed music" as a preteen, I can agree to that sentiment
Danny gave him a whole PR meeting for free.
LMAO 💀
I feel so bad for this guy, he literally did nothing wrong and is getting so much hate
I hate how tiktok loves to hate on people, especially artists just because it's not perfect or how they want it, I've seen many cases of small children getting bullied for posting their drawings as if they expected a child to draw like a professional or even good, it's just a child trying to share their hobby
And I know he's an adult but still, getting hate gives you anxiety unless you're so used to it like a big youtuber or someone who has experience with it. I've had someone hate on a drawing of mine, and even though that didn't make me dislike it I still felt bad about the whole situation
I think the way he handled it was pretty good, he's still human after all and honestly I have nothing bad to say about him
Especially being autistic I know what it's like having everything you enjoy being jugded by others and considered cringe, maybe I'm just projecting but all I see is a guy trying to have fun and share his art
no no. this dude deserves any hate he gets. I am legit shocked to see him show up in a youtube video but hes from the same city as me. we travel in the same scenes and he is an awful human being. In various ways. (Ive replied to too many comments at this point but like, I cant watch someone defend a r*pist)
this POS doesnt deserve any sympathy.
i fully agree
honestly, i think a lot of the hate comes from the fact he thinks it might be the next emo anthem. you have to be really cocky to think one of your songs is gonna be an anthem
It's minors bullying other minors most of the time lol it's literally army of children there
Not trying to pick a fight with you, because I agree with your premise- just trying to explain where the hate came from.
To quote Tony Stark, "Not a great plan."
Again, not trying to start anything; there are just smarter ways to share your art that don't involve hate-baiting.
"This song slaps on mute" was noticeably funny
"They're not talking to you, they're talking to themselves" is a pretty good assessment of internet hate
Not really
Anyways, great video as always!
ua-cam.com/video/uME09PxhhzY/v-deo.html finally it's here.
Danny and Drew are the prince and princess of the glory days.
love how Danny makes fun of people as a joke but he genuinely feels bad when innocent people start getting harassed with hate. we love danny
Yeah, if P!ATD wrote it, I don't think anybody would question it
This is later, but honestly I could totally see one of the late 2000s-early 2010s pop-punk darlings writing this and everyone just eating it up. Like it gives me All Time Low/Story So Far/Punk Goes Pop vibes. Also doesn't mean it's good, but middle school me would be 100% guilty of blasting it.
Honestly in middle school this would’ve been my emotional support song 😭
I think it depends on where you live. In South Africa they seem to accept you immediately.
I was emo with my younger brother and it is like identical to a song him and I wrote together then LOL. we were like 13 and 11...... He actually got spot on for young people
I used to identify as a weirdo, until I was informed the word I was looking for is autistic.
Yo, same!
Same bro
Ayyy autism gang!
SAME
Hey used to think I was just weird and then I found out half of the reason why I act strange is because of my autism
I fell asleep watching Danny and woke at 3 am to 6:09 and the nightmare on the screen. Slammed paused right as Danny said, "What tf?" as I too went wtf??? Why that shit scared me and I couldn't go back to sleep for like 10 minutes. 😂
i want you to know i just imagined waking up to THAT with zero context and laughed for a solid 10 minutes thank you
@@sluhn9837 I haven't revisited this video since I left this comment because I was truly scarred and you have reminded me of my trauma and laugh at it. Based, tbh. LMAO.
this reminds me of that one teenage girl who was promoting her music which was the genre “hyper pop” and so… SO many people were full on bullying her. it was awful. sure it’s a “different” type of music and i honestly didnt even like it, but people were mass reporting her music on spotify, getting it taken down.. some people were bullying her irl. i felt awful bro it sucked to see
Are you talking about that girl who started off her video, “my life fucking sucks” and how she didn’t sell her soul to the devil and that’s why her music flops or something
@@Jsyng418 nooo i dont recall seeing that (could be tho). most of her videos started with with her walking around in her school hallway and the caption would say “these people still dont know i made this banger” or something like that.. gaptooth something is her tiktok username i can’t quite remember it
was it that “no wind resistance” song?
hyper pop is now an established genre, even getting on the radio. salute to our uncrowned queens!
@@ona512 yep. its even on spotify. just wish people would understand that and stop sending hate to all the hyperpop artists.
This guy could actually do well in goth rock , his voice I think lends more to it. His personality as well. He does NOT pull off the happy youthful thing well.
He had it down in his earlier years. Trying to do his current thing has him looking like a strung out Fortnite skin
oh buddy he already tried it. it failed miserably cause of his awful personality and predatory behaviour.
He would absolutely not do well in goth rock. You think this dude could pull off sounding like Disintegration or anything Bauhaus wrote and make it work?
@@jeraldjoyce2995 LMAO great analogy
@@ridleysomeliana-lauer5814 You can probably find his old band online. Patron St of Plagues
I honestly thank you for sticking up for this dude, cause a lot of people hate on someone for style or practice that will help you in the future. You shouldn't judge someone on something so small such as music taste how someone dresses or other things of the such. Once again, thanks dan dan
______________
Edit: I didn't expect this to blow up like how it did! I don't wanna make this into a big deal, I just wanna say thanks ^^
@@ShlomoMetzenbaum He was also basically saying "Also stop going after that dude, he doesn't really deserve it" Which is true. It counted, he was telling people to stop being dicks.
@@ShlomoMetzenbaum you're like all over the comment section getting triggered that ppl are kinda being understanding towards the guy. It's a bit weird. Also Danny did try to advise the guy whether the correct or incorrect way.. I don't see how a harmless advice turned into "you're cringe, be better!"
Or people can just voice their thoughts on a public forum? You have to accept that people will voice mean/strong thoughts, ones even that are not slurs or ad hominem, but just brutal, and that's legal and fine and okay. You can't choose to do things in a public realm but then try to police the thoughts of that same public realm when they're completely in the area of acceptability. NOOOONE of these comments were that crazy. It was jokes and memes there was nothing horrific jfc.
@@g1ng3rsn4ps these kinds of comments confuse me. So as long as you're anonymous, you deserve respect and to be treated like a human being. But if you decide to share your interests, you should just accept that people are shitty and disrespectful? I think it's dangerous to constantly advise people to accept situations that they don't like, sets a bad precedent
@@bubblezzxxd15 Yes, this is exactly the point! People need to stop judging people for showing stuff they like, or just expressing stuff they like ^^
1:46 HE REPLIED WITH HEART EMOJIS IM CACKLING
It sucks when kids picked on you on the playground at school, but when the one kid came up to defend you and said "Yeah, he might be smelly and a weirdo, but you shouldn't be picking on him", that hurt 10x worse. This video is stone cold, but also true.
I feel like Danny was the type of person in movies becomes the your friend and teaches you how to be cool 😎
I’d say it’s more lukewarm
I feel like the main thing that made people immediately go ew wtf at the song in his tiktok was the fact that he announced it so overly confident like the “did I just make the new emo anthem 🤪“ like no you didn’t just say you wrote an ‘emo’ song. Plus idk if I’m just skeptical of him bc of a lot of industry plants have come from TikTok but he gives off industry plant vibes. He gives off Trampstamps vibes ngl
tiktoks just giving him the 🐜🍑 treatment 😭
@@patrickistruck HELP I FORGOT ABOUT BUG ASS 😭
yes
the song isn't my cup of tea either but it genuinely doesn't sound bad enough to be bullied for imo tiktok just likes to start shit and be dramatic
Exactly like it's not good but also not good music is made everyday and it's not problematic so idk why people are hating so hard
@@tarettime9392 exactly. Actual singers don’t even make good music all of the time. I don’t see anybody hating on them, even though they don’t like the song.
It's so much easier to just, scroll to the next thing and ignore it if you don't like it.
These people are more embarrassing imo than the guy they hate on lol.
It's pathetic to me, because they either are just genuine twats or they're trying to be the smartass funny type of people, but from my experience those that make agressive jokes can't handle a nice constructive criticism themselves lol.
And if you call then out they're being twats they just whine about opinions.
Where's the good old "if you don't have anything nice to say, say nothing at all" lol. It's as if they're some important person who's opinion matters to everyone on the internet.
@@parkerknight8738 mostly because he built it up a ton, the songs not bad enough to deserve that much hate, but he went about it like is this the new emo anthem? Seeing Anndy respond to you and seeing the lovely comments on that response video give me hope!
I really don’t mind the song, but I think what a lot of people didn’t like was him calling it “the next emo anthem.” I think, by doing that, he attracted an audience that’s not his target audience
I definitely would have liked the song when I was in middle school. As you said, it’s only his attitude that warrants any amount of “hate”
He's being sarcastic. I know him IRL. He doesn't actually think he wrote the next emo anthem.
@@kylebutterednoodle Fair enough but that doesn't clearly come across
I think people reacting so negatively to mediocre creations is one part of why so many artists can't get over their perfectionism and just publish things.
Mediocre works aren't meritless, and outright rejecting everything that's not crazy good or crazy bad is unfair to both the creator, and the people who would able to find that merit and let it resonate with them.
Idk man I just don't think people gotta outright clown on everyone who put themselves out there, especially when they're being sincere in their efforts to create something worthwhile.
Good video, Danny. I respect you giving him some actual constructive criticism.
FR, ppl take art way too seriously nowadays… if you don’t like what someone creates, literally just scroll. Its on their phone, they can literally just scroll away or close the app, It’s not like someone is forcing them to like it 💀
danny should write the next emo anthem called, “my wife died in afghanistan but i’m still rocking”

As a prior Emo, this song isn’t actually that bad. I feel like i could listen to it unironically. Danny is doing a good thing by not immediately hating on him, giving him the benefit of the doubt and all that. I actually agree with Danny. The song could use some, tuning. But over all it’s okay.

@@randomcrusader5632 but HE likes the song. And obviously there are other people who like the song.
Why should he NOT dream big and promote the shit out of something he’s proud of? Just because other people might not like it and he might get hate? I don’t understand the logic here. He should write songs but be super embarrassed of his work and think they’re bad and therefore never promote them or try to get other people interested?
That line of thinking is exactly why SO many people NEVER create anything or never share their passions with the world. It might be a little cringe, after all it’s his first attempt, but I think it’s infinitely less cringey than living an entire life afraid to share the things you love with the world because a few people might not love it like you do.
