This is the most insightful commentary I've heard about Star Wars, maybe ever. There is more in depth analysis going on here than in any of the countless hours-long video essays you find about Star Wars here on UA-cam. I love her passion, this put a smile on my face.
90% of the Star Wars fanbase is too stupid to understand or appreciate their own favorite series. It's a complete tragedy. There are some good analysis's and commentary on Star Wars but they won't have a high view count. Some of the best commentaries I've ever seen on Star Wars were from forums posts were someone just brilliantly broke down and analyzed the films after having a rewatch. UA-cam analysis is often vapid in comparison and caters to the stupid majority.
This is the most surface level analysis I’ve ever seen, this is what I got from like the second time watching RotS lmao everything she says is either from another video or just a visual observation with a surface level theme connected to it. 😂
As an artist myself, one particularly satisfying visual piece of symbolism I really appreciated was the final shot of the movie, the _twins,_ those two suns setting, a perfect set up & lead into the literal 'New Hope' of the next episode. Well done George.
I'm a dude. Nothing surprised me more than my instinctual protectiveness and care for my neice when she was born. I thought I was hollow and dead inside. Also, analysing star wars never gets old
It's an interesting take that she has and I do believe Revenge Of The Sith is an epic tragedy. Also when people say that the prequels have bad dialogue and wooden acting,I guess something is wrong with me because I don't hear any bad dialogue nor do I see any wooden acting. In fact I think all six Star Wars episodes are great and indeed I do think they are works of art.
Exactly, I don't know if people are expecting nora ephron type dialogue or something, the dialogue is like it is for a reason, star wars films were never originally reflective of their contemporary culture, they MOLDED the contemporary culture around them, post disney this seems to be reversed.
As I understand it the Prequels lean heavily into the kind of romantic style of dialogue of the films he watched which emulated the romantic style of dialogue of Shakespeare which itself emulated the romantic style of dialogue of Greek plays. I may be wrong in that but I’m pretty sure that’s right. If you watch or read any surviving stories from those eras they speak in much the same manner although with old English. The prequels speak in that romantic manner just with new English. “I am haunted by the kiss that you should never have given me. I can’t breathe.” Tell me that doesn’t sound like Romeo and Juliet type shit! It’s beautiful, and it’s tragic that people don’t see that. And it’s not just “oh cool old artsy fartsy language.” The dialogue serves so much purpose! “Come back! I love you!” “Liar!” *proceeds to choke her!*
It’s valuable for one to keep stuff like this in mind when one hears about how these films were supposedly hated by critics and audiences. Sure, select groups of fanboys were displeased, but those who actually know a thing or two about art and cinema were in love with what George Lucas and his team accomplished.
That's because it could rival any Greek tragedy. A hundred years from now this movie will be studied. And though it has its flaws, it is a masterpiece of the brilliance of one man's creative mind. Thank God for George Lucas
Anybody whose opinion is worth caring about realizes there's some value in the prequel films, and accepts that some people prefer them to the originals for those reasons. Time has shown the major internet critics of the prequels to be vapid and simplistic in their criticisms, and the rest have come around to accepting the positives. Who cares about the ones who hate you for that opinion?
It's definitely the best Star wars film. The three originals are better than the prequels, absolutely! But as a standalone revenge of the sith is perfect. It sets up the original trilogy so well.
I didn't go to every SW in theater, but I decided to see Revenge after I went through a book with the art from the film. This was also after I'd read the novelization. There's a lot going on there that many dismiss as "just a terrible film in an epic saga."
@aliensoup2420 Yah. That's usually what people use to call a film bad. Even by that standard, a film can be outstanding visually, musically, thematically. It's a reflection on how a film can win, but still lose when everything doesn't come together as it does with the relatively few extraordinary films. Even a great film can win and still lose if it fails to be seen outside of film schools and a small number of theaters. Revenge made its mark in spite of its flaws and negative reviews.
She did a great job of explaining why the ending of Revenge of the Sith would have been emotionally compelling if the prequel trilogy films hadn't been so clumsy and boring.
Hard agree 100%. And no one has topped it. Revenge of the Sith is not just the best Star Wars film of all time, it's possibly one of the greatest films ever made. It will be remembered when so many other films of it's era won't be. ROTS as a whole is high art, a cinematic masterpiece. It's not entertainment, ROTS is actually a serious art movie that just happens to have a big budget and a lot of action scenes. Revenge of the Sith, and George Lucas's Star Wars is more comparable to films like The Man Who Would Be King, or American Beauty or The Count of Monte Cristo in that's it's not entertainment, it's not made just to entertain you, it's made to enlighten you, it's art, it has a meaning, a message, a purpose for existence. Lucas didn't treat Star Wars as entertainment, the Prequels are not dumb fun entertainment movies, they are not equivalent to the MCU or other mainstream trashy tentpole flicks, and that is where Disney went wrong. Disney saw big budgets and CGI like most of the dumb fanbase did and assumed Star Wars was entertainment, when it wasn't, it was big budget art, and Disney aren't artists.
This movie will be studied for ages like the classic Greek tragedy. Because you are right it is not just entertainment. It is a hallmark of art that can rival Shakespeare. The tragedy of a hero who sacrificed his values to be the villain showing us how easy it is for us to fall.
She goes into some modern pieces in Glittering Images, including abstract expressionism. It seems she regards it the same way she regards all art, on its own terms. She doesn't offer blanket assessment but judges individual works. She's also sensitive to the Average Joe's skepticism of modern art: "Given this lingering skepticism, it might be wise to admit that there is more bad than good abstract art, which has been compromised over the decades by a host of inept imitations. All the more reason to celebrate the masterworks in this difficult genre." Page 139
Dude the writers of Star Wars sequels could never have this much passion. They think it’s all about diversity and it’s not it’s just about such a deep story. Anakin is my favorite character I’ve ever seen in anything and I’m 25 years old I’ve seen a lot of stuff lots of anime. But nothing hits like the prequel trilogy and the story of Anakin turning into Vader and why
The problem isn't really their obsession with diversity, but the fact that most of them simply aren't good storytellers. Kasdan can do well in concert with another talented writer, but not with the likes of Abrams. The contrast of how they approached the films with how George approached his is evident in the interviews. George talked about how he wants to reach the audience with the visuals and touch something in the psyche, how everything is a contrast of a hellscape with a heavenly image, etc. The makers of the sequels talked about shooting on old stock and using practical effects, and how everyone would be excited to watch the old cast return to the screen. Nothing about how the films blended into the landscape of the Star Wars saga. It's very telling.

Anakin’s fall works in theory but the build up to it (what should have happened in the first two movies) was poorly developed, such that his final turn is a biiiit of a stretch. The animated Clone Wars series does an infinitely better job of fleshing out the characters and motivations that drive the story forward - the Prequels suffer from a bit too much characters being forced from plot point to plot point.
