The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

I just LOVE Petula Clark and her songs. So meaningful and wonderful
Entered the US top 40 on 10/29/1966 and reached #21 a few weeks later. Another classic by Pet.

Absolutely amazing.
Live performance of a great song by a terrific singer. Oh for those days.
I was born in the late fall of 1978! I Like and I Love this Beautiful, Classic Song! I Like and I Love the Beautiful, and Extremely Talented Singer, Actress, Dancer, Entertainer, Performer, Pianist and Songwriter Petula Clark who is fluent in English, French, German and Italian! It should be Dame Petula Clark! I Like and I Love the Beautiful Dress, Hair, Makeup, Set and Shoes!
Petula Clark is , easily and by far and away , one of the greatest female vocalists in the history of music 🎼🎶 in the world 🌍😍🥰💗🤩 ! - just tremendous amazing terrific incredible and unbelievable talent and ability ! - the songs that " Tony Hatch 🐣 " wrote were her finest records 👏👌👍😁🎯⏺️⏺️⏺️
Who else feels this song resonates today given the nasty world issues that we are all facing? I love this song. The lyric that really sticks with me is "I long to wake up in the morning and find that everything has changed and all the people that I meet don't wear a frown". That link seems super relevant.
It sure does, the Lyrics in that song resonate a lot nowadays, even the title.
Pet, awesome!! One of my favorite songs!!
Looking very cute in 1966. What a voice!
scdevon:Petula Clark is THE GREATEST FEMALE VOCALIST OF TIME.

Bruce Pappas A GREAT VOICE INDEED.
PETULA CLARK IS WITHOUT ANY DOUBT WHAT SO EVER THE GREATEST FEMALE VOCALIST OF ALL TIME.
The lyrics of "Who Am I" address the difficulties of 2021 with amazing accuracy. Take a look at Petula Clark's stage presence - she's singing to us right now, in this pandemic.
My Lord. She is such a wonder of talent, and of exquisite, beauty, Thank you Petula, for all the music and grace you have blessed the human race, with.
Ivan Granger: This is why Petula Clark is THE GREATEST FEMALE VOCALIST OF ALL TIME.
FANTASTIC summing up of everything Petula there Ivan Granger.
Of course I can only echo every single word you have said.
Very well put indeed Ivan and thank you very much.
Petula Méga Star🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Can't get enough of Ms. Clark! And this aired on the very day I was born - Sunday, October 9th 1966!
this is great!
She is really very nice. I love this song. Warmest regards from Paris :)
Wow!
This song was near the middle of a streak of 15 singles by Petula that reached the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart. Although this song peaked at #21, it is still breathtakingly beautiful and a clear indication of just how good her music was in this time frame.
She is truly the first lady of the British invasion, with Dusty Springfield second
Michael Rochester Cilla Black, and Shirley Bassey were powerhouses, also. Petula I think, has the most recordings of all of them. She sure was Talented. I loved her versions of 'Sailor,' both in English and French.
@@ivangranger8494 Cilla Black and Shirley Bassey were never US household names and did not have the string of hits that Petula and Dusty enjoyed in the US. Petula is considered the First Lady of the British Invasion, and she says she thinks Dusty was the best of all.
Anne Moore Yes, Petula and Dusty were very much a part. Silver Threads, and Golden needles, was a Song by the Springfields that highlighted Dusty's talent, before she went solo. They recorded it before Linda Ronstadt.
As for Cilla, and Shirley; they were in my home. But my home had much eclectic, music . Don't forget all those though, in American households that moved here from England after the Second World War. My Mother in Law was one. I also knew many people that were in New England younger and older, that were from England until I moved away, mid eighties.
I JUST CAN NOT FIND ENOUGH plaudits to sum up how totally fantastic Petula Clark IS.
In her hit single she sings the line "everything I touch turns to gold" and that really does sum up her outstandingly brilliant career.
WHAT A MAGNIFICENT🌹 VOICE.
I LOVE YOU PETULA CLARK.
The 1960s was the greatest decade in music history from the Beatles to Motown to a gem such as this.
Agreed .... you can't beat the 60's sound.
Beautiful just beautiful-I place her with Dionne Warwick as my two favorites female singers.
It was always fun to catch Petula on Ed’s show. Looked here like she was starting to rock the short flip hairdo a few years before Florence Henderson did as Carol Brady. 😎
First record single that I ever heard in 1963 Downtown by Petula Clark
She is a class act. I recently sent a photograph autograph request to her with postage and she sent me back the photographs signed with the postage unspent, given back to me. The lengths she goes for her fans is amazing. God bless that lady
That is so cool. She always had such a genuine beautiful spirit that made me feel good when I watched her perform or listened to her music.
I met her at a performance about ten years ago and we spent several minutes chatting and she was as warm and wonderful as I had hoped she would be
@@Mackermanesq She actually organized a meet and greet after a show she did in North Tonawanda New York when she heard that several fans were waiting outside in the cold for her. She told everybody to come right in and get in line and She signed everybody’s albums, CDs, pictures and had a short chat with her. She told me that she was very good friends with the Rolling Stone’s and she said all the press about them being bad boys was a bunch of garbage. She said Mick Jagger was very well educated and when the cameras weren’t on he spoke with a very proper English accent
@@michaelrochester48 she was on the Ed Sullivan WITH the Rolling Stones when I attended (dress rehearsal) January 15, 1967.
@@Mackermanesq Wow, I think comedian Alan King was also on the show. So you got a great dose of entertainment that day...That the infamous let’s spend the night together performance were Mick Jagger rolled his eyes? LOL
London's Icon artist .... doesnt get better than Ms. Clark
Beautiful
Just lIke PeTula herself this song is agelesd.
My all-time #1 with Karen Carpenter and Judy Garland a close second and third.
Thanks. And it was sung "live". No lip-syncing, no auto-tune (like today's no-talent wannabes). Just pure vocal magic. Cheers.
Ed insisted on "live" performances from his guests- with a few exceptions in the later years.
Petula Clark yet again attesting to the absolute fact that she as the best female singing voice of all time.
Crystal clear vocals and pinpoint accurate diction she is totally unique and UNMATCHABLE.
With a astounding career of EIGHTY years and still recording and acting at the age of 90 years young Petula Clark (CBE) is in a class of her own and of course it is World Class.
Tony Hatch wrote "Downtown" and this gem, "Who Am I". To my mind, both songs are worthy of equal footing. This song didn't get the same traction. Listen to the lyrics. They will resonate in your heart.
Don't forget this, and a lot of Petula's songs, are credited to Tony Hatch/Jackie Trent. Jackie could write meaningful lyrics with a surprising poetic sensibility for a pop song. As she was also a noted singer (with a #1 hit in the UK in 1965, displacing The Beatles 'Ticket to Ride') she had a feeling for which lyrics could work in a song, especially by a female artist.
@@chrisnorton4382 : Petula Clark is the consummate 🌟star - your observations and the facts in your posting lend force to that thought. Many thanks.
@@19gregske55 Petula Clark THE GREATEST FEMALE VOCALIST OF ALL TIME.
Fact.
Now appearing in London's West End, as the Bird Woman in
''Mary Poppins".....!!!!
I'm looking for a Petula Clark performance from a spring 1965 Ed Sullivan Show. She and the Beach Boys, two of my big favorites, were supposed to be on that night. Shortly before the show came on, a thunderstorm started brewing. My mother shut off the window air conditioners as a precaution and told us that if the storm got any worse, we would have to turn off the TV. Ed Sullivan came on and said that the Beach Boys had to cancel due to an illness of group member Brian Wilson. Well, there was still Petula Clark to look forward to. But before she came on, the storm intensified, and my mother turned off the TV.
Love your memory of that time
Looks like the Ed Sullivan channel has this performance....two songs, May of 1965....black and white....enjoy!
@@eowyn1964 Thanks for letting me know. Yes, I found that video around the time it was posted and enjoyed even more than I hoped I would.
😘💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕Petula
Show 👏👏👏
what a chic
ABSOLUTELY STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL BEYOND BELIEF.
This performance was part of an "all-comedy night" on the program. Wayne & Shuster performed their "Shakespearean Baseball" sketch; Allen & Rossi did a "Football" routine; Richard Pryor pondered on "Fishing"; Myron Cohen told a few more stories; Manuela Vargas performed a Flamenco dance number with his troupe....and the Berosini Chimps stole the show. 😉
Pure class. Now we have shit like WAP.
They used a music volume that overwhelmed the voice and lyrics.
Sorry Richard but I have to very, very, VERY strongly disagree with you.
EVERYTHING SOUNDED BANG-ON and PERFECT to my ears.
Crystal clear vocals and I heard everything as clear as a bell.
Petula Clark IS WITHOUT ANY DOUBT WHAT SO EVER THE GREATEST FEMALE VOCALIST OF ALL TIME.
Beautifully sung. I'll take Shirley's version tho
The song is borring.
It's not her best I must admit
You're boring.
Only to those who are likewise.
