Wil Wheaton, who played Gordy, has said that Rob Reiner's genius was in looking for and casting young actors who embodied their roles already. Corey Feldman was an angry kid, River Phoenix was adult beyond his years, Jerry O'Connell was a sweet and gullible, and Wil himself was depressed and exploited by his parents. Stephen King says when he went to see the first screening, he had to leave before the credits because he needed to cry in the hallway. Chris Chambers was a real guy, Stephen's best friend in childhood, and he died just that way. (The novella this is based on, "The Body", is counted by many as one of the greatest short stories of the 20th century.)

@@Deathbird_Mitch Apt Pupil was made into a film with Ian McKellen, and of course The Body was made into Stand By Me. The last one, The Breathing Method, is both the shortest and the one "King"ish, as it's pretty much straight body horror. It's never been filmed and I don't think it ever will be, given how hot-button anything about fetuses and childbirth is in this country. I'd be interested to see, say, a Japanese or Korean take on it, though. They have interesting approaches to stories of that kind.

It's strange.. my older cousin was just like Chris/Dennis.. the most supportive, funny and genuine role model a young man could have in his life. He was tragically killed in a car accident, aged 19, a year after he left for college. Like the end of this movie says, even though I hadn't seen him in years at the time and it's been over twenty years since he passed, I still miss him every day

It's interesting to watch younger generations react to this movie. Just completely different social upbrings, for better or worse. I was 12 when this movie came out. Saw it with all my friends. We thought nothing of the foul language, the bullying, the smoking, the way an adult would talk to you like the junkyard scene, the way you had to walk on egg shells around older kids like Ace. They absolutely made those types. They wouldn't care if you were half their size or half their age. We also didn't necessarily go taking overnight adventures on the tracks, but certainly well out and about on our own, and facing very similar challenges to what's in this film. You had to have each other's backs.

For those unaware, this film is based on a true story. Stephen King wrote the novella "The Body" (published in the collection "Different Seasons", the same book that gave us 'The Shawshank Redemption') about a real-life adventure he and his friends took at that age (although it was a dead animal, not a dead boy). Gordy is based on King himself (hence why he is the storyteller of the group). As SK wrote in the book notes: Yes, the leech thing happened. Yes, he has a scar THERE. No, he won't show it to you.

The soundtrack is fantastic, the adaptation is terrific, the direction is stellar, the acting is heartfelt, the cinematography is beautiful, the editing is sharp. This is one of those films that can transport you back to that time, even if its 40 years later. This movie is timeless. • @AnimeOtakuDrew
    @AnimeOtakuDrew Рік тому +173

I was ten years old when this movie came out and I saw it in the movie theater in Enid, OK. Obviously I didn't experience what childhood in the 60s was like, but being so close in age to the characters of the movie, I still felt a very strong connection to the film. In my childhood, I had my little group of friends that I always hung out with and my youth was very much like what you see in this film. Hanging out in our clubhouse, going camping together, going on our adventures, talking about girls, and discussing the important questions of life (like whether Darth Vader or Khan would win in a fight). Even the mid-80s was pre-internet, so there weren't smartphones for us to get distracted by. We played board games, card games, and rode bikes, maybe getting to play on my Atari 2600 every once in a while. I even listened to the same kind of music as the kids on here, because my mother listened to oldies a lot when I was little so I developed a love for that music myself (although I did listen to new music of the 80s as well).
As for the actors, you're right about Corey Feldman (Goonies and Lost Boys) and Kiefer Sutherland (Lost Boys), but you missed that the older Gordy who narrates the story was Richard Dreyfus (Hooper from Jaws). The other kids are also notable with Chris being River Phoenix (you'll see him on the third Indiana Jones movie if you ever go on with that franchise), Gordy being Wil Wheaton (Star Trek The Next Generation and Toy Soldiers), and Vern being Jerry O'Connell (Sliders and Scream 2). I could recommend some good movies that each of them have been on that I think you would enjoy.
By the way, the song you asked about was "Every Day" by Buddy Holly. The second song you asked about was "Yakety Yak" by The Coasters. I absolutely loved the music on this film; enough that I bought a copy of the soundtrack.
No shame being afraid of heights, Jordan; I am too! I plan to conquer that fear by going skydiving; I figure if I can jump out of an airplane, I'll never be afraid of heights again!
I'm really glad you guys enjoyed this one. It was such a big movie to me when I was young because I could relate so much to these kids. My recommendation this time has to be another movie that made a huge impact on me: The Never Ending Story. Such a great and magical film, I have no doubt whatsoever that you will both love it!

I vote for the Neverending Story too! Excellent movie, if somewhat darker than you might expect from a kids movie.
I saw this movie in the theater with my dad, my best friend James, his mom and his sister when James and I were almost done with high school. Their group reminded us of the group of friends we had in our small Boy Scout troop. We all went on a lot of adventures together during our time in Scouts, and James and I spent a lot of time hanging out together when we could, even into our college years, and going on our "Night Missions" roaming around the woods and hills of our respective neighborhoods in the middle of the night trying not to be seen. We never did anything too bad. Lobbing water balloons at cars from hiding was the worst thing probably. But we'd always have some sort of goal, like going to the overgrown graveyard (last used in 1913) in the middle of the dark woods and standing up or restacking pieces of gravestones that vandals had knocked over or broken or climbing up on the roof of his house to catch a glimpse of Halley's Comet in '86, before we headed down to the 24/7 convenience store to burn some quarters on the one arcade machine they had and buy Icees. Good times. 🙂

We would explore along the creek than ran at the edge of town, trying to build rafts like Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, or go running around in the grain field behind my house, where the grain was taller than we were. We went on camping trips with our Cub Scout troop (and later Weebelos and Boy Scouts). We went on trips to explore caves (especially Alabaster Caverns near Freedom, OK, which we visited several times; I have a lot of stories there!). We stayed overnight with each other and would stay up late telling ghost stories to scare the hell out of each other (well, mostly to scare the hell out of Dustin). Mike even went on a family vacation with me; we went to Six Flags over Texas and saw all sorts of sights around the Dallas/Fort Worth area (like Southfork Ranch). This movie came out when I was in 7th grade and I wore the soundtrack out. Gordie went on to be in the Star Trek The Next Generation TV series. Chris was played by the beautiful River Phienix, who had a rough childhood himself. He was magic on screen, but died of a drug overdose outside of Johnny Depp's club, The Viper Room when I was in college. It was tragic. It is said Leonardo DiCaprio may never have been as famous as he was if River had lived. Many of the roles given to Leo early had been written for River. He had a vulnerability beyond compare and was absolutely beautiful. He was a musician first and was playing out live around the time of his death, but quietly, not wanting his movie star status to be why his band made it. His family was in a religious cult when he was little and later he and his sister, Rain,, would busk for money to support the family. River's brother, Joaquin is also an actor playing Johnny Cash in the movie about his life. Definitely check out River's story. I was 12 when this movie came out, and I went to go see it in theaters with my friends, and it hit us hard, or as hard as anything can when you're 12. It was a glimpse at the fact that things change, and life goes on, and you can't stop the years from coming. But I'm lucky, because with technology today, I still keep in touch with a lot of those friends, and one of my best friends from when I was 12 is still one of my best friends today and was one of my bridesmaids at my wedding. I'm 48 now, divorced, with an 18-year-old son in his senior year of high school, and I still, to this day, cry at the end of that movie, even more so now that I've lost friends and family members along the way. But that 12-year-old innocence is something I still treasure in my heart.

River Phoenix was Chris Chambers. Older brother of Joaquin Phoenix. Died at age 23 in 1993. He did act very well in this movie for being a 'child actor'. The main role was played by Wil Wheaton who went onto to Star in Star Trek next generation. Vern is Jerry O'connel, Teddy is Corey Feldman. Really only child actor movie I can think of where all the kid's turned out to have real acting careers. The adult version from the beginning, ending, and narrator, is Richard Dreyfus from Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Jaws.
Vern was played by Jerry O'Connell - who grew up to be a very handsome guy - look him up.
Chris was played by River Phoenix. He died of a drug overdose at 23. Very sad. At the beginning of the movie, Gordi just reads about Chris getting killed in the paper. It's the impetus for him writing.

The song you asked about right before the train was "Everyday" by Buddy Holly and the Crickets (Funfact: The band was called the crickets because when they used to practice in the garage and cricket in the walls would serenade them).

I'm 70 years old, and I have at least 5 or 6 t-shirts with River Phoenix on them. When my late husband and I saw this film, we walked out of the theater raving that "that kid" was going to be a huge actor. He was 15. At an even earlier age, he made Explorers. His co-star Ethan Hawke said River was on an entirely different level. While the other child actors wanted to get home and swim, River was busy considering what his character, a baby scientist, would have in his pockets. As he hit his late teens, he was the actor that almost every other young actor wanted to be. His contemporaries were Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Keanu Reeves, Christian Slater, Johnny Depp, and many others who were serious mega talents themselves. There's no calculating the amount of work River did for charity. He was the face of peace, kindness, animal protection, Veaganism, fair treatment of veterans, and any number of other causes. River supported his siblings and both parents when he should have been getting supported by someone himself. He was raised in a cult that claimed it was OK to have sex with children and commented that he had lost his virginity at age 4. He never attended school, and even though Hollywood was killing him, he refused to walk away until he made one more film so that there would be enough money for all of his siblings to go to college. As the oldest child in his family, he took on responsibility for everything; as a dedicated spiritual person he tried to take on responsibility for the entire world. So when someone points at my t-shirt and says "hey, River Phoenix" I couldn't be more tickled. His death was a loss to the entire world.

We used to walk the train tracks to a town called Patchogue. We also played a game called "Chicken On Track" the last one to run off of the tracks with the train coming "WINS".
We are all still friends--one was my cousin--
we all know each others children, and our children are friends.

I've found as you get older this movie hits you harder and harder emotionally. The show Stranger Things seems to do it as well to an extent because it gives off the same vibe, but not as much as this one. It just puts you right back into the feeling of when you were that age and makes you miss everything about it.
BTW it's kind of interesting how not many people, me included, ever realize that Chris Chambers is the attorney who was murdered in that newspaper article Gordie was reading in the very beginning. It makes it more hard hitting at the end when he talks about it.
What a bunch of great kid actors. Nothing needs to be said about River Phoenix. Will Wheaton was fantastic in this. Very underrated actor.

Our family had problems with mailbox baseball back in the 70s... except they would drive over mailbox instead of hitting with baseball bat. After the second time they demolished our mailbox my dad fixed it. Our uncle welded up a 4"x4" steel beam to look like a 4"x4" wood post. They painted it black and concreted it in the ground about 2'-3'. One morning we found the mailbox knocked over to the side but there was a trail of oil going down the street... whoever it was cracked their oil pan. 😁 We never had problems with our mailbox after that.

We didn’t really relate to each other once we entered high school. Some of the group are dead. Others became a high class engineer with Corning Glass, an alcoholic Vietnam Vet, a CFO, a double murderer serving a life sentence, and a collegiate hockey star. We will all be dead in 15 years or less. No Lard Ass stories, but we had fun.

My dad finally had enough and built a mailbox involving a LOT of reinforced concrete and welded steel that a speeding car wouldn't knock down. I went on Google street view a few days ago. That thing is still there. I think you'd need a crane to remove it.
