    But the thing is BTS has never targeted the US market. It's not their goal to debut there, they're just doing what they wanna do and if people like it, they like it, and if they dont, they don't. Their goal isn't to be an American artist, but to be a kpop artist who succeeds in the wider world as korean artists.

      From what i've known ( by reading articles, but I'm sorry TT it was long ago, so i cant give you the link) Big Hit actually aim for America first, and then Korean after. As we know, since 2014/2015, BTS was more popular in American/USA than in Korea. But after 2016 ( BBMA) The Korean public noticed them more.
      But even tho they aim for the USA first, they wanted to top the different chart with their own language. And I'm proud of it :D

    you know what, on an interview with Ryan Seacrest .. there's one fanboy asking why not making English album. then suddenly all the protests came around on twitter saying that is not necessary for BTS to make an English album because they love BTS just the way they are with their powerful + meaningful Korean lyrics. and it came from US Army. I think just 1 or 2 song mix up Eng-Kor will do

    • @jakobhubner325
      @jakobhubner325 6 років тому +137

      I mean...almost all of their songs mix in A LOT of english already. I think the amount of english they incorporate in their songs is more than people actually realise

      For the fans... we don't care. We even listen to the japonese version and learn it haha He's just saying for the worldwide public and for them to stick! That guy and all the press were kind of aggressive about the English album. That's why we were triggered. Like "don't pressure them, we not asking". But maybe in the future, when they get more fluent, I'd have no problem with it. I'd actually have no problem with any decision they're comfortable with. But that's a valid argument they had. And realistic. I liked it.

    • @Joe-ol6zt
      @Joe-ol6zt 6 років тому +13

      I think its quite funny and ridiculous when they shouldnt make music in english for their AMERICAN DEBUT. Lol. Did they debut in JAPAN with KOREAN ALBUM? The answer is NO. They make a whole Japanese album and i dont see anyone complaining about it.

    • @TheJamericangal
      @TheJamericangal 6 років тому +32

      Jonggi Rohendri it’s not necessarily the same for America considering there’s so many cultures here & people speak tons of different languages. Because of that, there’s different styles of music in different languages so BTS isn’t required to make an English album. For Japan, people really only speak Japanese over there so they make a version of their songs in that language (although fans don’t mind singing in Korean).

    • @Etoile_J
      @Etoile_J 6 років тому +48

      Jonggi Rohendri The Japanese music market is different. You have to have japanese songs to make it there while they've come so far in the U.S already with korean. Also the past proves that english versions always flop. You don't get the same nuance in english as you do with english and if it's an english version and not an original then sometimes the original meaning is lost.

    While I get where Danny is coming from, but I agree more with David. There has already been lots of other kpop groups have made English tracks but still didn't break into the US market. Having English tracks is no guarantee of success. I think the approach that BTS has taken is much better, primarily because its much more organic - their success has actually been driven in the US and internationally by ARMY, rather than a top down approach from their management. Which is why I think its far better they stay true to their Korean roots, including language. This is something that both RM and Bang PD have said in interviews was their preferred approach. Having said that I do agree that including more English would be something that could be done to help in relation to the US markets and collaborations with other US/international artist will also help them break through the barriers into the US etc. I agree the members increasing their English language proficiency for interviews and such would definitely be something to aim for, as that will help facilitate their entry into English language markets, whether it be in the USA, UK, Australia or elsewhere. However, I wouldn't be keen on a whole English language album.

    bang si hyuk said to billboard after bbma :
    " I'm not a believer in releasing full English songs to the U.S. market, like many K-pop artists have," Bang tells Billboard in his first-ever interview with American press. "We must focus on what we do best as K-pop artists and producers and maybe add some special features to which international or U.S. music fans can feel attached. That is the best way for me to put K-pop into the mainstream U.S. music market and, in that regard, BTS will participate and perform in a way that is not much different from what they have been doing in the last three years. We're adjusting and improving the way we do shows on the tour to meet the international or global level and expectations so that anyone, regardless of their culture and background, can enjoy BTS music and performances."

    Despacito was the biggest hit, I don’t think bts should loose their Korean originality at all. This way the boys can feel confident about their song writing and singing. I rather have them be confident in their performances and career than appeal to an audience that might not accept them either wayyyy😂😂

    3 years later: BTS are one of the biggest boybands ever and have paved the way for kpop in international countries WITHOUT making a song that is completely in English (at least the main songs)
    EDIT this comment was before Dynamite came out. But, my point still stands. BTS was still tremendously popular before Dynamite came out, and they didn't need the help of english songs to get there.

    if BTS make a full English song/album, there is NO POINT of them being a Kpop group. I think I won't be listening to BTS in the first place if they promote English music. I mean, I could've just listen to Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran or The Chainsmokers for some English song. BTS succeeded globally even when they're being themselves, not being what others want them to be. That is why they're special. So why are we making them ordinary? if you think a Kpop group making full English song with some awkward lyrics and unnatural pronunciation is what they needed to enter the American music industry, well that is your opinion. I mean, I don't think they will be as confident singing it live. Their stage presence, the delivery of their lyrics, their expression, their dance and their performance in general, its amazing because they're confident in doing what they do best, in a language they're most comfortable with.,, hangul. I am proud of them for who they really are, not what they pretend to be.
    LOVE,
    -PROUD ARMY

    그야 일본은 폐쇄적이어서 일반 대중들은 그저 일본어로 아예 들고와주는걸 원하는 경우가 많은거고, 영어곡의 경우에는 회사/아티스트/해외팬덤 전체가 나서서 영어곡 필요없고 소신 지켜서 가장 잘 표현할 수 있는 한국어 곡을 내는걸 원합니다. 인터뷰에서도 영어 곡은 안한다고 했구요. 미국 시장 정복하는게 목표가 아니기때문에 영어곡으로 점철할 일 없습니다. 이번 곡에 영어가 많았던것은, 함께 오른 미국 아티스트들에대한 배려인것이 1차적이고(빌보드 아티스트들에대한 배려) 2차적으론 영어권 팬들을 위한 팬서비스였죠. 리더가 인터뷰에서도 말했듯, 방탄은 그들의 메세지와 음악을 추구하는데 목적을 두지 상업적으로 모두의 위로 올라서려고 성적에 목메는 그룹이 아닙니다. 덧붙여서, 방탄에게 영어 앨범 내달라던 팬 전화통화 이후 (생방라디오중) 미국 실시간 트랜드로 아미는 한국어로 괜찮아 라고 올렸습니다.

    From BTS' and the CEO's opinion they don't want to debut in America officially, but they do want to expand worldwide as Korean/asian artists to represent Korean/asian music. Personally, I think that it's time for other people to realize that there are amazing artists that sings in other languages besides English. As a native English speaker, other English speakers expect you to know English if you want to get anywhere and I personally want to see a change in that and also see more Asian artists represented worldwide as well. It's be nice if BTS sang some songs partly English as long as they WANT to, but they definitely don't have to. I want to see if BTS can break the mold so to speak. They are already gaining tons of fans for singing in their native language alone and anyone that listens to their songs can feel their emotions and simply look up the eng subs. What I'm saying is that Music transcends language and BTS can prove that.

    8 months ago - "BTS should incorporate more English to break into the American market" ".. whole English album (or partial ones)"
    8 months later - " 1st Korean group to top Billboard Hot 100 (#10) and Album 200 (#1) with a full Korean album"
    Just saying, I think BTS authenticity and sincerity in their songs are not determined by the language that they are singing in but it is through their heart, words, and action. This proves how music breaks barriers, and that includes language barriers.

    I personally know only a handful of Korean words, but I don't want kpop in English. If I wanted to listen to English music, I would do so, and not listen to kpop or jrock. Most of kpop MVs nowadays are extremely accommodating and are released with English subtitles. It takes literally 1 second to turn them on. And it takes 5 seconds to search the lyric translations or lyric videos on YT. All kpop concert dvds are released with english, chinese, japanese and korean subtitles. If a person wants to know what the song is saying, it takes one second to find out. That is more than enough. Vlives also come with subs or are subbed after their live stream.
    I don't want BTS or anyone else to have to compromise themselves, their comfort and connection with their music, and bend backwards for the sake of kpop's breakthrough in the US or whatnot. Also, I love this Mic Drop remix, but to be honest, the parts where they changed parts to English, as much as I respect their effort, sound a bit gibberish and does not flow as well as in Korean, especially in a fast song like this.
    But you know who wants to make music in English, in fact is already doing it, and enter the US market? CL. The queen. So let's root for her and listen to her English songs.
    By the way, fun fact, most of the world actually speak mandarin, so in theory in order to get the most new fans BTS should release a chinese album. Bam.

    I get your points about making songs or an album in English, the thing is that more than wanting to have success in America, they are advocating to make America and the world realize that there's more than just music in English, and I love it especially with the social issues that are taking place right now.

    Oh god. Not an English only album. The English ver. of Mic Drop didn't excite me that much overall. It would've been better if they left the lyrics as is with Steve Aoki's remix-ing. And I bet some of the members themselves don't want to make English-only songs, especially if it means limits to their own creative output if they can't properly express what they wanna say in English. Let kpop be kpop with Korean lyrics and if they don't make it in the mainstream US market because their music isn't in English, as an American fan, I am more than okay with that. Tbh I don't even like that they're trying to reach a US market.

    I don't think it would have the same effect in English. For one they're not debuting in America they just did a performance in the US, the whole point for bts being out here in America is to make Asians be more appreciated and represented. I also don't think having more English will really do much like many other groups have tried English albums and that flopped. And of course the whole point that bts doesn't know English
    It would be good tho to include more English or smth but not a full album, or maybe even just one song in English should be enough

    Well I think now BTS proved themself without doing anything in English and they nailed it everywhere not just America. They keep breaking records and have people joining their fan base from all over the world, as you see I'm a Sudanese girl and it hasn't been a while since I got to know BTS but now I'm totally in love them (you won't believe how fast the army base is growing here in Sudan). There's something charming about BTS in particular that once you are introduced to there music you can't just get out it, whether it's the relatable music that they produce that goes right to bottom of heart, or their humble down to earth personalities! I don't know good music do transcends culture and language, and they do break all borders sticking to who they are as Koreans and keep producing good music.
    They are even good motivation to learn Korean. I really started to get better in Korean because of them. I wish them all the best, they really deserve it.
    Sorry for the long comment and Thank you I really enjoy your reactions.

    I think that as long as most of the boys don’t know English, they should just stick to Korean lyrics. If BTS wanted to stay in the US industry, breaking through with English would be sort of misleading and it would be way more interesting (and easier) for BTS to hold their ground with Korean songs.

      they just have more English lines since they are collaborating with an western artist..what did you expect?
      It's told many times that they don't believe in entering the western music scene with full English songs.
      They are still a kpop group..but if they're gonna collaborate with western artist..they need to have a balance..and I felt it was captured decently.

      This is literally the most they've ever spoke English in any song as a group and Namjoon still uses it more on his own. You know what song it is. They really only translated the lyrics, it's not even that serious to complain about them "making an album in English" when it's literally one song.

    This English VS Korean debate is interesting, but people don't think deeply enough about it before deciding what BTS should do for them.
    What they want might change over time, regardless of past interviews none of us can really know what's in their minds presently. To those of you saying they should do English, they don't have to, they have gotten to this stage by singing in Korean. But on the other hand, to those of you saying that they are kpop artists so they should sing in Korean, I disagree, they don't stick to the strict guidelines of being pop artists (I mean let's be honest micdrop is hip-hop) so why should they stick to the K part of kpop? They can do as they wish and break all rules and expectations in any way they please.
    I think it's what D&D are saying in this video that the language barrier is an issue because just for a moment imagine you never had translations on BTS music, yes it would still be lit AF, yes you might still be a big fan, but how can you connect on a deeper level without knowing the meaning behind the words? That would be a superficial connection. It makes sense then that *IF* they want to succeed on a worldwide scale with longevity, they would do better by producing content with more English in it to allow the deeper connection with people discovering them on the radio for the first time. Not doing so would be a handicap on becoming mainstream western artists. The track F**ck it by Eamon it is really good for perspective here, it was a terrible song tbh, like really bad, but the lyrics are something that many people could relate to, the lyrics ALONE gave it a story/deeper meaning and made it a success.
    MICDrop remix (as well as how much they just invested in their trip to the states) is proof for me that they would like to go mainstream, I know they called it a gift, but bighit is still a business at the end of the day and I doubt they spent that much on an MV just to say thanks, it's more likely they are testing the waters for western success with this track.
    The same people (myself included) who trended the #ArmyOkayWithKorean hashtag after Namjoon seemed offended by a 'fan' on USA radio asking for an English album are the same people (again myself included) who went wild about the news that they were blowing up on western media last week. For me at least it's because I want more people to experience BTS and I want BTS to blow up worldwide, when my Grandmother knows who BTS is I will be satisfied lol. But if Korean limits them from becoming that big and they decide to combat that limit, I don't see an issue with them choosing to do that. Likewise, if they decide what they have is enough I am okay with that too.
    I personally believe they should do what they WANT to do, whether that's English, Korean or Klingon for all I care, I will always support them and there will always be subs. Their talent, effort and production will make it amazing every time, the MICDrop remix is proof of that.
    It doesn't matter anyway because BTS just gonna be over here and there doing what they want, snatching wigs and dropping mics regardless.
    PS - That was a long assed comment, I guess I needed to get that off my chest.

    Everyone got their opinions and I respect all of them, so please respect mine:
    -Personally I love Desiigner being in MIC DROP, his lyrics actually meant something (idk why I understood his deep thinking), he was talking about how he will always get the chicken (get to his goal) even if the haters keep pulling him back, he's also rapping about.. basically saying "Fuck You" to the haters, which has a similar topic to BTS' lyrics for Mic Drop, his voice and flow was catchy and makes you bop which is a nice thing.

    they represent KPOP! you see, they were known for it and mainly they show how music transcends language and it breaks the barrier you know, then it opens the mind of other people on appreciating these types of music regardless of the language that was used. they may not be able to fully achieve that right now but they are helping future kpop groups to be welcomed as well .. it's like hiphop and rap not being accepted before because it was different from the usual music that people listen to before but look who's dominating the music industry the most right now. let's help them by making them instead flex their music by not erasing the essence of keeping it in korean and just a little english 'cause that is KPOP!

    ❗️❗️❗️ ATTENTION ARMY ❗️❗️❗️
    IMPORTANT
    Ever since BTS performed at the AMAs, they have been getting a lot of BACKLASH and this backlash is coming in forms o racism and prejudice. Obviously as fans, we feel obligated to defend BTS, but instead of fighting fire with fire(arguing back and forth, throwing swears words around blah blah blah) I think we as fans should start a movement
    THE MOVEMENT: under every hate comment, let's create a positive comment thread/chain or whatever and write:
    "LOVE YOURSELF #LOVEMYSELF"
    The movement will not only bring awareness to BTS UNICEFs campaign, it will also set a as a great example for our fandom. Let's make this a trend guys. I've already seen some armys starting and it's honestly so empowering. Let's bring our boys honor and make them proud. Let's do this guys, FIGHTING 💞

    If BTS did a full English album... the general public will not find them as unique. BTS never aimed for western media tho. They should just stick with what it is. They have already broken through the main stream market while singing Korean. I mean think about it they are inspiring minories in the U.S. Finally someone, not white and not speaking English made it big. If they came with a full English album it will be disappointing. They can be a mainstream pop star with the Korean song as well. It's not BTS that needs to change but the people. They need to stop thinking that English is the best language ever and stop discriminating.
    Also I am pretty sure if they were to make an English song the lyrics wouldn't be as good and it would be harder for them to participate in producing. Us ARMY love them not because they are pretty boys, but mainly because they are different from other groups. Their lyrics are relatable and unique +they produce the songs.

      I like them but not because they sing in korean. I would never even noticed them if it wasn't for the massive content there is on the internet, especially on youtube. It was just because I liked the backstory of the band and of each member, that I start to get interested in them. But even then I would only watch their funny videos made by fans, the armys. But still, I couldn't understand what they would say when they sing. If they rap then I should at least know what they are saying along with the song since the rap I'm used to listenning to, praticaly just have a beet that sometimes it isn't that interesting. A music where lyrics matters the most. So, the first time I heard their music, was in an intro to a youtube video of a gamer/vloger. It played the chorus of a song. It was in English, that soud sounded familiar and I liked to hear it. So, I research for the music. And by coincidence it was a BTS music, Mic Drop. And guess what? It had subtitles. I already liked them, but it was in that moment I started to like their music and fall for their dance moves and coreography. From that moment I said to myself, if I don't like one of their music It will going to be awesome just by the dancing. So I just binge watched their music videos. Payed attention to the lyric subtitles a little bit more. Then I expand a little more to the songs without mv 's and there were more of their old songs I liked, then the new ones. And then, when I though it couldn't get more amazing, I discovered that some of the video clips had backgroud stories, also came the solo songs and finally The Blood Sweat & Tears music video, and I completly fall for them. The guys, their music, their dancing, their charecters, their storyline, everything. Making art out of that book, that's just...
      Yes, they sing in korean, and I don't mind. I love them, and I admire they work, but not because they sing in korean.
