I’ve had that same problem and came to the same solution. Now I not only keep my cell builders fed up but also my breeder hives. Makes a big difference. Great video.
Great tips on feeding your grafting hive for better royal jelly in the larvae cells to graft , your absolutely right I haven’t heard anyone mention this ether except for starter colony, thanks for sharing this , I believe my grafting is going to be a lot better from now on . 👍
@@hefleyhives… Mate your not the only one who has been down the road with horrible grafting attempts, i to was just like you till this video you did because Dah it didn’t dawn on me about the egg laying colony feeding as well , I was like they do it naturally she’ll be good but nah shit grafts not good , I don’t think you may have realised newbies who see your video will have a great start doing it right from the get go , thanks for sharing I know I’ll be doing it the right way from now on , thanks again 👍

Hey. Try this Tip : Get lovely Queen Cells without Grafting ! 🎉 Get yourself the best Queens Frame of "Eggs." Get your Hive Tool and under mash the under Cell Wall and all around and under Cells so that x1 Chosen Egg is kind of on a Cliff Edge ! 🙃 Wax above Egg, That Eggs Cell is OK in both Top and Sides. But lower Wall and all around is Mashed / Dented Inwards with your Hive Tool ! You want a nice flattened Cavity for that QC to "Hang Freely In !" You can repeat this say x6 Times across a Langstroth Frame. And again you can repeat this in another Row, leaving x3" from the Row above. Whats does all this precise Mashing of Cells do ? Well, that Chosen x1 Egg* will be Drawn out and Down into a lovely Hanging 'Peanut' aka Queen Cell : with no annoying attachments or adhesions to the Frame. By doing that Mash Down : all QC's will be hanging down with plenty of Free Space all about them. 👍 On Day of Capping or soon after, you can Harvest them, add them to HQLess Nucs, Bank in Roller Cages etc. Even add them (Caged) to an Incubator. Best to do this on Day x9 or x10 from Egg : (thats Day 0 to x3) Queens Hatch on x16 Day from Egg. You can Handle and Ship QC's without Climate need from say x12 Day. Add some Tissue Paper around them. Place them carefully into a Strong Card Tube and Ship. If more than one QC in Mail they will need to be isolated too. Or first to Hatch, might kill its Room mates in that Padded Envelope ! 😮 All that Cell Hanging Space allows the Beek to use Scissors to Harvest those Capped Queen Cells easily ! I recommend cutting a good margin to the side and well above each QC. It may drip Honey but you can trim more off (!) I like a Wedge of Wax above the QC, as when you add them to Roller Cages (lower them into the Open End Top) that Wax Wedge can become your Seal and it also holds the QC 1/3rd down that Roller Cage. When Virgin Queen Hatches she will chew out the lower end of that QC and will have enough room to emerge and move about easily in that Roller Cage. You can add these into a Queenless Colony say : between x2 Brood Frames, roughly x3" apart or so. And Nurse Bees will look after them for a few Days. Allows the Beek to make up Mating Nucs, or if Weather, Work gets in the way of Schedule. Hope this helps. 😎 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 Happy Beekeeping 2023 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 *Repeat this x1 Egg Wax Mash / location wise across a Frame, (more than needed !) : Any QC's not up to grade can be cut out or torn down.) Some say the Duds 'still have Queen Phremone in them : so store these unneeded (dry dead) Cells for Bait Hives as a Swarm Lure. Best to add a dot of Lemon Grass Oil too. Get yourself some Bees for Free !
Wow different ways of getting queens but if you want a number of hives going at the same time to sell that’s where grafting comes in for the number of colonies big bee keepers etc use ,each to their own way of doing things , grafting is a good skill to have .
Update : Near here : Research Site. A Scottish 🏴 Bee Blogger known as 'The Apiarist' has a Fab current and back catalogue of useful Queen Rearing Tips and Tricks (He's a Research Scientist) Beekeeper. Also a vast knowledge of Beekeeping too can be found via his Blogs. Us local Beeks are keenly awaiting a Talk he will do to our Bee Association Club. Can't wait. 😁 Meantime : Has had a Blog say a few Weeks back, stating better Queens get made in bigger Cells. So by doing, assisting Bees to make larger Cells over Grafting, gives you better Quality Queens. (Aka Fecundity, longer Lived, more Healthier.) Over those made via the 'Grafted' method / placed in artifical Plastic Cells. So far I think Bees who has been a functioning Species over many Mellennia, (to that of me 🤭 their Beek, for a few decades, keeping Bees for a few Years now) will show they do a far better job, than I could do. Let them make the Queens I need. 👍 So give the above "Tip" a try. . . Works for me & my Hobby. 😎 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 Happy Beekeeping 2024 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
